Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

Slightly obsessed with attendance numbers and just came across Tennessee State women's basketball having 98 people in attendance tonight. A city as big as Nashville and no one really supports that school. Also find it ridiculous TSU football plays where the Titans play and can't get 3,000 in a stadium that big.

I am also slightly obsessed with attendance numbers. Viewership numbers too.

The two big Los Angeles teams have historically had lousy numbers. Viewership failure falls partially on mismanagement of the defunct PAC and its stupid network. Attendance is weak because it’s a big pro sports town. And a bit on PAC mismanagement

This weekend is major for WBB with SCar playing at UCLA on Sunday and Notre Dame at U$C today (and football between those two as well). U$C announced a sellout yesterday and tickets were disappearing for the larger UCLA arena last night. May not sell out but probably gonna be about 8000 above UCLA’ usual poor attendance.

It will be interesting to see what eyeballs the games draw in TV. U$C is competing with college football Saturday. Usually not a good decision

LA is such a pro sports city that the lowly Sparks, w the worse record in the W for two straight yrs, are in the top four of W attendance, drawing many times the amt of fans USC and UCLA do.

Sparks new coach Lynne Roberts is good friends with Cori Close and Lindsey Gotlieb and says she wants to work w them to make LA a hub for women's bball. The Sparks' new facility should help at least show someone is taking it seriously.

Watched most of Fla St vs Fla last night . Absolutely can't wait for our game with them, which we have a very good chance of winning. Coop vs Latson is going to be a great matchup, as is Zee va Timson. Fla St is on a mission to pick up their D this yr, picked up full court alot but didn't trap much. Should be a great game and a chance for a real breakthru for the LVs.

Maybe the media and networks should push and promote them to get more fans, I’ve seen them do that before.
I know it's your deeply held belief that fans follow media, but maybe the lousy attendance for west coast teams shows it's the other way around. Media is not that clever or creative. They react to what fans like, not vice versa.

That is incorrect....unless you have a newer update.
Aaliyah Chavez, the No. 1 player in the Class of 2025 released her top six schools. The six programs she included are LSU, Texas, South Carolina, UCLA, Texas Tech and Oklahoma.

The 5-foot-11 point guard from Lubbock (Texas) Monterey High School narrowed her list down from 10 schools recently, but with the new update USC, Arizona, Tennessee and Ohio State are no longer in consideration.
Unless you got you something close to 1 million dollar Nil deal not in the running. So far looks like Texas and Texas Tech are the two willing to pay. Others could get in several months to go.

It’s really exciting!

I’m very surprised SC isn’t in the top 20 at least. They have quite a bit graduating. I haven’t done a deep dive to see who has extra eligibility but would have thought they would take a couple top players in this class.

Any of the SC fans care to explain? Genuinely curious. Thought yall would take a forward and off guard in this class. I know McDowell is signed and she is a great prospect.

Obviously not hurting and who is coming back are awesome players. Don’t think anything is wrong there just curious.

South Carolina recruited some elite talent and expected they would join the birdie nest as Coach Staley puts it.
Two of which(Civil and Prawl), just wanted to be in Tennessee more. GBO!
I’m a firm believer in high school and transfer portal recruiting goes hand and hand. As Coach Caldwell, Coach Lazo, and Coach Tubner arrived on Rocky Top and began the process of welcoming talented transfer after transfer that was a sign of the ability of this staff to recruit at a very high level.
The results in the first month in Knoxville landing the best transfer portal class in the SEC that included winning the recruiting battle over LSU to sign Ruby Whitehorn proved they were elite recruiters.
Another factor that was overlooked is that once this staff hit the AAU scene this summer all the coaches from Caldwell, Lazo, Burdette, Barrier, and Tubner that were shown at AAU circuits were instantly connecting with prospects as they were making official offers and reoffering players that were evaluated.
They didn’t miss on a single prospect and landed the best recruiting class in the country.
247Sports got it right.
ESPN I can’t fully validate until they change Jaida Civil rankings. No way she is the #32 player in the 2025 class. You don’t miss a highly talented prospect rating that badly.
A few keep bringing up unsigned players. This staff has moved on from and did along time ago for valid purposes. You don’t need those players. They signed five players that checked every single box and fit the Coach Caldwell system that has already set records in four games so far this season.

Belmont sticking it to Ohio State right now, up 9 and really playing aggressive.

Can they hang on for 5 more minutes?

I sure hope so, can’t stand Ohio state. Something about Kevin McGuff has just always rubbed me the wrong way.
Definitely one of those coaches who can’t seem to get over the hump. Much like Cori Close. They can have all the talent in the world and never secure the bag.

Fans will follow what the media and sport networks push, last season they pushed and promoted a players every game, Juju/Kiki is playing Notre Dane today, and I don’t see a single post about it on the ESPN or Bleacher Report App. Trust me this game would have way more buzz if everyone knew about it, I know about it because my favorite players are playing and I follow.

Interesting journey for Aliyah Matharu. I saw last month that she was in the transfer portal AGAIN after having two successful seasons at Mississippi State, one at Texas, one at Florida, and as of about three weeks ago, has signed with Baylor.

Is four major D1 programs for one player a record? I can't imagine starting over that many times. 🫨

Well if you ever need to throw up just watch the highlights of the celebration for Geno becoming All-Time wins leader in College Basketball.
Yeah, you're right, becoming the all-time wins leader doesn't merit a celebration. SMH. Didn't like all the hoopla? Blame the media and the University. Geno didn't plan it and couldn't have cared less about celebrations. Of course, you would hate to see that much fuss if it was your coach. Love him or hate him, and clearly you're in the latter category, you have to respect what's he's done at UConn over his 40 years. Don't be such a hater, for God's sake. It's OK to give credit where credit is due, even if you hate him.

Immediate first impression of ND/USC. ND looks so much better coached it’s not even funny.

USC has no game plan outside of get it to Watkins. Underutilizing several really talented players.

The three guard attack with Miles, Hidalgo and Citron is the real deal. I think they are a very strong contender to win it all this year barring any injuries to those three.

Also think Hannah Hidalgo is 10x more fun to watch than Watkins.

That’s what hurt them in the 1Q.

A lot of ISO Juju ball - which makes no sense when you have Kiki and other talented players.

Exactly. Poor coaching. They have one of the most talented rosters in the country and are just letting one player force bad shots. I’d be annoyed if I were KiKi.

They are pushing that narrative with Watkins as the next face of women basketball, but look at her overall shooting percentages doesn't show anything special. Miles and Hidalgo are definitely much more watchable. Watkins forces a ton of shots and has no range. 20% from 3 doesn't get it done.

Not at all, way too much 1-1 forcing bad shots from the perimeter for her. She doesn’t have Clark range and has been well defended by Citron tonight making her really uncomfortable.

Yeah. Establishing Kiki should’ve been priority number 1 to start the game. Try getting Liatu King for ND in foul trouble.
