Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

I kinda agree with Geno. I'd much rather watch a basketball game than a wrestling match. I do think it's sad, but inevitable, that the women's game goes down the path of the men's. Whoever's biggest and strongest, not necessarily most skilled. Dawn's right, that path has been most pronounced in the SEC. She has every right to stand up for that style of play, which she obviously embraces. It's just opinion on approach to the game.

I'm just not sure how that gets translated as personal insult or certainly some racist or sexist thing that ole Dawn is just not going to stand for.
WBB has a history of allowing WW3 to occur in the paint while calling ticky tack fouls on the perimeter. In this case, they weren't calling fouls on Cooke, but they also sure weren't calling all the fouls on Boston/Amihere/Cardoso by the UConn post players. They all probably have their share of bruises. Geno playing the victim here when UConn has ALWAYS played physical as well is not a good look.

The racist connotations I'm guessing are from racist fans who have something to say about how the SC girls "look" compared to "less aggressive" players, and I don't think she's wrong. It reminds me of that shock jockey who had some things to say about the Rutgers' women's team during their last heyday.

The women's game has changed; finesse vs physical. Geno does not approach or teach the physical manner of play. However, he allows his players to adapt to what the officials are calling. Personally, I hate when an offensive player initiates contact when driving to the rim and is awarded with "and one".

Wth translated it that way?

I consider UConn's offense to be finesse, but their defense? They give as good as they get. There is nothing "finesse" about Nika Muhl and Aliyah Edwards.

This was a quote from Dawn.

Staley was also angered by Auriemma's comments because of their connotation toward a majority-Black team led by a Black head coach. She referenced comments made on a UConn fan page on Facebook earlier this season that called the Gamecocks "thugs," as well as a post on Twitter by an LSU fan two weeks ago that compared them to inmates at a men's prison.

"We've been called so many things and I'm sick of it. I'm sick of it because I coach some of the best human beings that the game has ever had," Staley said. "We've been called thugs. We've been called prisoners. We've been called monkeys ... We take this very seriously being the No. 1 team in the country, being a team that young people look at and want to emulate. We set the example of how you do it and do it the right way.

UCON plays as physical as the other teams, sometimes more so. Geno is upset because he does not have it as easy as he once did. Parity is a good thing, unless you are the previous dynasty that now finds itself with some competition that it doesn’t quite know how to handle.

They set some aggressive and intentionally hard picks on offense, always have and on defense they mix it up with the best of them.

Coach Dawn Staley apparently. Took it very personally. But I am totally not going down this path.

No doubt Edwards gave much more than she got on the RJ play "down here". UConn fans explain it as just doing what they gotta do to stay afloat, cuz everyone else does it. I'm sure that's the case. It does make it rich for him to whine about it though.

I agree, he's hanging on to his beloved finesse offense tho, and it's beautiful if old timey now.

Yeah there's idiots out there making leaps and links down racist sexists roads. But that's not what Geno said, and I don't believe it's what he meant. Some of us old guys just hate to see finesse bball of any color or stripe go away. That's all.

Geno was quite upset that they called anything on Edwards on that RJ downing. That was another bad look for him.

There will always be teams that excel at that style of offense, it won’t go away, but even those teams know they have to be decent on the boards now also, the game is evolving as it should. Good shooting motion offenses won’t go away.

Ten years ago no way in hell GA throws a water bottle for a technical late in a game when his team is behind and has the ball. Huge coaching mistake that he never used to make. 4 point swing in a 4 point game. He is slipping.

We've been over this a hundred times, but Lobo was worse. Even with benefit of replay called out RJ as the agressor. Got quite a few retweets of the photos of all 3 intentional and dangerous fouls Edwards committed. But I'm sure both she and Geno are still convinced they were right.

You can win a lot of games if you can offensive rebound and win the turnover battle. You can shoot 40 percent while the other team shoots 50 percent if you can get that shot differential up. SC does this a lot and it allows them to win the close games. When they shoot well and do it is a blowout. 38 percent to UConn 51 percent was won on the offensive boards. Geno complained about they had 12 more free throws but most of them were because at the end he was extending the game. Overall before that was dead even at the line.

I never hear what she says as I can't stand her commentary so I watch in silence or with radio help.

Note that Cardoso was the first player to foul out, not a Uconn player

The game I watched was officiated just about like what I see in the SEC. Yes I think the SEC is the most aggressive contact conference and allow more contact than say the ACC or Pac 12, but UConn is very aggressive and gave as good as they got as far as contact in that SC game. The game was totally won by the pounding they got on the boards namely Cardoso and Boston.

Dawn has a history of keeping the race card handy. It's a tool of hers whether justified or not.

I doubt it is a card. It is her lived experience. That doesn't mean that others might disagree with her assessment of a particular situation but it is hard to sort out when you are a sitting target.

This is so true. For a long time Uconn was using illegal screens (it was brought up quite a few times during games) . There was plenty of movement. Players weren't being called out. Maybe 2 years ago the NCAA decided illegal moving screens to be a point of emphasis. It forced a change in the way Uconn players set screens.

One thing I can say about our coach she accepts defeat graciously. To much so really. I'm still upset about that Gonzaga game some really blatant errors by the Refs in that one. We probably need a lot more forceful coach both with Refs and with players. Pat Summit would never accept the errors our team makes game after game. It would be corrected or someone else would be playing.

Ironically, Edwards was guilty of a moving screen on the play that Geno flipped out about and got a T. She shoved her butt into the next zip code.
