Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

Has aubrey declared shes returning ? She is eligible for the WNBA draft as well .
I have not heard one comment suggesting that she would be leaving. I have no first-hand knowledge, but I think that I would have heard some mention of her considering not returning. This was her first year back after a year-long absence.

Well, That is a hall-of-fame coach, knowing what her team needed to be successful. She has done this year after year since taking over as a head coach and her Baylor teams consistently made it deep in the tournament. Kellie bringing that many new players and thinking she could wave a magic wand and puff they're great was wishful thinking. Now, I am still not counting Tennessee out come tournament time. There is no team out there that wants to see Tennessee early in the NCAA tournament. If they pull it together, they could make a deep run.
If we had a better roster the results would have been different.

I think they are simply passing voters' eye tests, regardless of their schedule. It's impossible to deny that Angel Reese is a bigtime player who is getting the right kind of support from her teammates, so I can't even get mad about it. Their OOC schedule was easy, but they're beating some good teams now and obviously the voters are giving them the BOTD.

Still, for all the pre-season talk about how important the Net rankings would be in seeding this year, that obviously wasn't true, and it does seem unfair to those coaches who actually scheduled under the belief that it would and are now paying the price for having believed it.
You’re right Angel Reese is a big time player that can carry a team a long way. I like the passion she plays with and how she holds her teammates accountable, I wish we had a player like that.

IMO that's a million miles out of bounds. The recent missed games were related to his own illness and the death of his elderly mother.

To me spreading this speculation is easily as bad as criticizing eyelashes. Far beneath you.
You will please note I said could be. I did not know of his mother’s death and certainly would have considered that with his recent absences. Nonetheless, I do think his behavior has gotten increasingly unpredictable much like Bobby Knight. I would also jog your memory to his drunken outburst at a Knoxville restaurant years ago. In this instance Pat came in and Geno, already seated, began yelling at her across the restaurant. It was not a friendly hello.
Finally, the uncontrolled out burst by Knight essentially cost him his career. Geno will be given a wink and a smile by UConn and the NCAA.

What is your basis for even saying something like that? I know you hate him and UConn, but I always thought you were a straight shooter.
I am basing that on previous behavior when in Knoxville after a game he was already seated at a restaurant when Pat and her coaches came in and Geno started drunk yelling at Pat. That told me that he is prone to drinking too much. As a public figure and coach at the collegiate level you would think he would watch that IF he could.
When looking at him he seems to be aging awfully fast. I am seeing that same aging process with someone in my family who, while not an alcoholic, or is at least a highly functioning one, is aging quickly.
Finally, I compare his recent behavior during a game to that of Bobby Knight. Bobby was an egotistical man who drank heavily. The behaviors appear very similar to me.
Regarding who I hate. I don’t know exactly how you divide UConn versus players versus Geno but I will say there have been numerous UConn players that I liked a lot and felt that in addition to being really good players were just great kids, great role models and have grown into impressive women.
Regarding Geno, I would actually feel much more kindly towards him if he did have a drinking problem as that would explain some of his more jerky behavior.
If he doesn’t have a drinking problem then I find him to be an obnoxious, egotistical jerk. He has also been a dirty recruiter
Regarding the UConn program. I would be happy if they never won another game, a majority opinion among LV fans I would guess. I would not however wish anything bad to ever happen to any of the players, injuries etc. Nor would I accuse the UConn staff of playing injured players to that player’s physical detriment. You will recall Geno felt fine impugning our program with those accusations.
So I’ve been my most straight shootedness I could be here.

I wish North Carolina would keep sitting Teonni and give her a reason to want to transfer. I think Tennessee would be a good fit for her:)

Looking where both programs are right now, IMO it's far more likely Tamari would transfer to North Carolina to play a final season with her sister - assuming she would want to return to college for another year...

He actually spoke movingly of how it hit him harder than he thought it would, how much he felt for his sister who had taken care of Mom, how it changed his outlook on the importance of winning and losing and life in general.

But that's the point, we don't know, as we all had brought home to us last fall with TK's illness. To pin behavior on speculation of an illness/behavior disorder, esp based on one incident from years ago is far beyond the line IMO.

Agree to disagree.

I promised myself that I would not defend Geno on another team's site, a promise I obviously did not keep, but.....are you actually comparing what Geno did with what Bobby Knight (who I actually generally like) where he was seen throwing a chair, the gross bathroom incident, and then choking a student? I mean, I understand the hate is real but, are we really comparing apples to apples in this case.

Note: When I was in Knoxville there was a crowd of young Tennessee basketball fans waiting for Geno's autograph. Even after security told them he couldn't sign, he walked over and spent an inordinate amount of time signing. They announced he had a plane to catch and he just kept signing. They announced numerous times, "This is the last pic." Then he took another. And, another. He really isn't the devil. However, please don't respond, I still have a picture of Christian Laetner on a dartboard on my wall at home, so I get it.

One last thing: I have compiled a few interesting videos of women's BB coaches being T'd up. Not a defense, just fun entertainment. The last one stated, "This will make you like Geno," so I put it in for those (very few) interested.

He is aging just fine, dear Lord the man is 68 years old.

Fine with agreeing to disagree but what exactly did you expect him to say regarding his mother’s death? I don’t get that that proves anything other than he is human and he let his sister take on the responsibility for his Ill mother.

Those are all fun. Nothing like watching people lose their minds.
Regarding Geno, being nice on occasion really doesn’t prove anything one way or another. But regardless, I could be wrong, time will tell. Let’s touch base again after the next Geno tantrum.

Wow even a shot over his Mother's death? You feel qualified to slip in a comment on the care arrangements??????

What it proves is exactly what the TK incident proved. We don't know all we think we know about these people and wild speculation about what causes performance and behavior issues is unfair, as you reminded us with TK.

Even if there was a drinking problem, that's an illness just like blood clots and therefore not fodder for sports hate and derision.

What shot?? You are the one who said he admitted that his sister took on the majority of the care duties and that perhaps he regretted that. This is a common thing and everyone needs to be aware of.
I also never would treat alcoholism as anything other than a disease. It does often, however, explain anti-social behavior. I don’t think I called him an alcoholic but feel free to keep putting words in my mouth.

Who's putting words in who's mouth? I never used the term alcoholic nor did I accuse you of doing so. Please quote if I'm misremembering.

You did use the term "drinking problem", and admitted you've fed that rumor before.

I equated your phrase “drinking problem, that’s an illness” as a reference to alcoholism. Is that not what you meant?

Last go I promise. "Drinking problem" was your phrase in your original post, not mine, and not me putting words in your mouth. Did you mean alcoholism?

If you're comfortable throwing that rumor around as you've done before, go for it. To me, it's quite hypocritical in the wake of the furor over the TK incident.

Time to move on.

I do not equate drinking problem to alcoholism the disease. Not do I consider myself able to fully define alcoholism for you as that is a medical condition and best left to the professionals.
Your comparison of TK’s medical condition and how it manifested itself earlier this year with a pattern of behavior over the years by Geno is nonsensical. But , fine, here you go he is just by nature a jerk
Also, Kellie is stubborn, Dawn is a tireless self promoter, Kim M. Is a drama Queen who makes fashionistas cringe.

I just rewatched the Uconn game vs SC for the third time, trying to see why the Uconn fans were complaining and expected each time to see bad calls against Uconn but instead, tbh, it was called evenly and Uconn gave as much as they got. They are a way physical team that took it to SC throughout that game, so I am not sure outside of the loss why they are so riled up about that game. I mean if you rewatch the game, they may have been the more physical team, prob were. And the focus post game was that Lou was “beat up”, watch the game, she was even more physical than her defenders were and she did it like most Euro players do…sneaky tough and physical but smart enough to know when refs are watching. Jesus, Uconn was the most physical team we have seen all year, and our players were mauled in the post and on drives so I don’t get the Geno rant except that it all started when they got behind and after they lost, he lost his cool.

I’ll say this once, Boston gets mugged every damned time that SC goes to her in this game. In this game she was groped, held and hacked a bunch with no calls. Maybe Uconn fans think it’s okay to play that kind of defense against a post player in the paint…….just don’t play tight defense on their guards or wings or they will scream that your team is not playing basketball. Btw, their guards played our guards more physical than we played them.

A point I hope Kellie makes often to recruits.
Look back at pics of your dad or grandad at age 68. Now tell me Geno is aging badly, at 68 he looks normal to me. Maybe your family has awesome genes, but most men look like that when they close in on 70. Your post about him having a drinking problem and all the reasons why you thought that are so far off base Lucy and tbh, nobody should post that kind of stuff about somebody off of a “hunch”

Rooster, my friend, I felt like it was a reasonable explanation for His historical and current behavior but it appears I am the only one who thinks that.
I have been forced to admit that perhaps Geno is just a natural born jerk. And just to make sure everyone’s ox gets gored I had to allow that Kellie is as stubborn as a mule, your very own Dawn is a self-promoter and Kim M. Makes Dolly Parton look like a haute couture model. If I could think of something about Tara I would add it here.

Spot on Lucy. One thing we all know is it takes some big personalities to elevate the sport of WBB and get the attention it deserves, people like Kim and Dawn are polarizing but they shine light on the sport. If we had ten more Kim’s and Dawns in this sport think of the attention it would draw. Now think about things if everyone was just plain dull or average…..we need some more outsized personalities And we all want WBB to take a bigger spotlight. A little Spice in the pot can be a good thing. Peace lady.
