Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

There are always more than one way to look at a situation. Another one could be that playing cupcakes did not prepare the team for an actual challenging game. You almost learn more from a loss than you do from an easy victory.
Our coach hasn’t learned from her losses she’s still keeping the same game plan and on top of that she’s says it’s no need to change when evidently it does

Man I wish we had played LSU at home!

I understand that you generally cannot compare two teams based on the scores of a common opponent, as there are to many factors to consider. However, LSU loses to USC by 24. Tennessee loses by 8 AT LSU. Tennessee's loses have been to #13 OSU, #2 Indiana, #23 Gonzaga, #18 UCLA, #11 VT, #6 Stanford, Miss ST, #4 CT, and then #3 LSU. LSU's 3 best wins were against now unranked Arkansas, once by three, and Tennessee. They also beat Georgia by 5, and TX AM by 6, two unimpressive wins, albeit wins. For some reason LSU being ranked #3, and a 2 seed at first reveal, while Tennessee being unranked seems to be unrealistic. If you just look at the conference schedule (which even that is uneven) but USC is 12-0, LSU is 11-1, and TN is 10-2. There is NOT that much of a difference between LSU and TN. LSU is being rewarded by having such a weak schedule, which will most likely be exposed at tournament time.

I remember a many years ago I had a discussion about college football. A mid-ranked football team lost three consecutive games to teams all ranked in the top 8, in three close games. This team dropped all the way out of the poll. My thinking was, "If the polls are correct they are SUPPOSED to lose to those teams." Realistically, the #4 ranked team can still be the 4th best team in the country if their 3 loses were to numbers 1,2, & 3. My friend argued that they had to drop below teams with one or two loses. The point being, when you have two vastly different schedules it is not fair to judge solely on win and loses. In reality if you switched the LSU and TN schedules you would almost definitely have TN with a 13-0 record to start the year, while LSU would have suffered several loses.

I think TN will certainly be ranked and deserves to be, maybe not in the top 16 based on their record, but they’ll be a harder out than LSU or even Ohio State who spent most of the season in the top 4 without a doubt. Playing a tougher SOS doesn’t show up well now but will help TN prevail in the NCAAT.

I actually like Angel Reese passion and refusing to lose attitude, I wish some of our players showed that kind of fire sometimes.
There's passion and refusing to lose, and there's shameless self agrandizing and disrespecting other players, including your own. "Passion" should never include taunting nor disrespecting, and certainly not getting technicals that cost your team points as Reese has routinely done. It looks immature, high school Harry.
I do wish the official had called a delay of game penalty late in the game when Reese literally pushed/dragged her teammate off the free throw line in order to do her gyrating psychic mind meld routine while the other players were lined up and the ref was waiting in the lane to hand the ball to the shooter.

One of these days, a teammate is going to get tired of the antics and angrily shove Reese away. She's just way too much about making everything about herself.
Exactly what I'm talking about. This is all on the coach. Angel needs to be reined in. Not to stop being passionate, just to channel it in non-obnixious ways.

I am thrilled ole Ang got a big comedown today, and I hope it helps her gain some perspective.

SC just too much for anyone right now I'm afraid. Especially when they hit outside shots. If we keep it under 20 I'll be pleasantly surprised.

This was a very good post.

I agree with your assessment 100%. Alot of this is about matchups on the court as well. Some teams match up differently so the outcomes don't seem to compare. What I liked about today's game is that Kellie went to that matchup zone against a much smaller team for a longer period of time than we have seen this season. We are always saying that opposing teams' guards go off on Tennessee. We try to play teams with these quick guards straight up and smaller guards get around us and the help doesn't come. We have very big guards that do not have the quickness they need to play straight-up man defense against smaller teams. That I believe was our downfall at Mississippi State. The Lady Vols have the size to match up with anyone and most teams 2-5. A nice run and jump defense played for longer periods of time would be so effective for the lady vols. It takes away those driving lanes and a 6-2 or 6-3 player doesn't have to chase around a 5-9 guard, not to mention at our size we can still contest on the outside if the zone is active and rotating correctly because of our size. We are a few points away on the defensive end from being as good as most of the top ten teams in the country. I hope that defense we saw in the second half continues and we can beat just about anyone in the country, including SC. UCLA gave everyone the blueprint when they used that box and 1 defense for 40 minutes. South Carolina is still pretty inconsistent from the outside. That is how you beat them, pack it in the paint, and hope south carolina forgets how to shoot the outside jumper for 40 minutes and go to the glass hard.

I'm posting this post-game interview with Coach Shea Ralph because there's some really good stuff in it regarding Horston, plus a poignant segment toward the end after she was asked about how she and Kellie had come full-circle. Before the game both of their 4-year-old daughters apparently became besties. Very sweet.

Because nobody has tried that since UCLA right? Have you been watching? It’s all anybody has done against SC for the past 6 weeks.

The matchup zone is our best defense and yes we used it some today. That 2-3 zone we played some against Miss St should never be seen again. If we had used the matchup against think we stall some of those straight drives to the basket and we could've still gotten out on the three just like the man. Our coaches found the right options yesterday not at Miss St, Quick guards were not suited for man to man. I think match up zone is best for Arkansas as well.
