Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

Louisville is 2 and 2 and still ranked and I know you can't always go by head to head but this early UT beat UT Martin by 40, U of L beat them by 22. And UT didn't receive 1 extra vote? Iowa and FSU will have to be beat for UT to get some attention apparently.
Alabama also dropped 2 spots after being 6 and 0 and at least look good so far, even with an easy schedule.
Vandy beat Butler by 30, who beat Indiana. That same Indiana team beat Stanford. Didn't receive but 1 extra vote to be ranked.
Miss State has 0 votes receiving and should at least have some votes to be ranked. Look like a top 35 team, although they haven't played anyone yet.
Yeah, I'm kinda irritated Tennessee didn't receive even one more vote after this week. We'll get there, but it's definitely already looking a little suss.

Tennessee needs a nationally televised game to get the ball rolling. If they can beat the crap out of Iowa in Brooklyn, that will get the attention of the country and hopefully the poll voters.
Therein lies the rub!

Iowa is, once again, a very fundamentally sound, well-coached team. I just hope Tennessee can beat them, even by one. I'll need medical treatment if Tennessee were to be able to beat the crap out of them. 😂

Yeah I thought the LVs would get more votes this week. Think that's more about the last few years than the current one. Gotta win that trust back. Fla St game will be huge.

This feels to me like a team that can whuup someone big or unexpectedly lose big. More margin for error than last year's team probably, but still not alot. And alot of things have to go right like hitting 3s, controlling tempo etc. Hopefully things smooth out as the season progresses but right now the LVs feel like a wild card.

So here is a huge nothingburger, but I felt I might as well gossip and ramble little. It's a slow day, I'm bored. :(

Was talking to some big 'Cuse WBB fans at the game yesterday and a lot of them were disappointed that Coach Jack does not take the time to address the crowd after home games like she did last season (it was never much, just a thank you for coming out and supporting us, the usual). Also people commented that she does not seem as fiery on the sidelines as last season -- which is something I also noticed. I even heard other speculate that if she doesn't do well this year her job might be in danger. o_O Now that last one, to me, is a bit over the top, considering how Syracuse only fired Q because of all the harassment issues and not because of his many years of mediocrity. And Syracuse just signed their best recruiting class (2025) in a while. Coach Jack won't be gone unless she wants to leave or she starts throwing toasters at players during practice.

Does all of this mean anything? I doubt it. But I found it interesting that the fans don't seem too pleased right now. And tbh, I can't blame them; Syracuse lost to St. Joe's on a lackluster performance and then let a prime upset slip away by losing to Maryland. Also, their new transfer from LSU isn't exactly setting the world on fire. They hardly lost their entire team once Fair moved on, but her absence is very much felt right now. Syracuse did reasonably well last year and also managed to bring in some big (for them) crowds for ACC games. The casuals here are very fickle. Though to be honest, it doesn't help that the university treats WBB season ticket holders like dirt; no perks to being a season ticket holder (in stark contrast to all the benefits they shell out for MBB!). Just goes to show, I guess ...

ESPN voters hate this program and have for a very long time.

Hopefully it puts a chip on the players shoulder and gives them something to play for. I firmly believe we have the right person in charge to use that as a motivator.
I think the one linked is the AP poll, right? The actual ESPN poll (not power rankings) is exclusively the coaches voting, or have I gotten this wrong?

Watching Ole Miss and can’t fathom why they are ranked or just moved up in the rankings to 17. They look awful.

Jackson St. is worse than terrible and they can’t score on them at all. Worst offense I’ve seen out of an SEC team, including Arkansas.

They do not look fit either. I think they are a bottom half SEC team this year.
Yeah. Louisville too.

I’ve watched them 4 times now. I am not impressed. No bench and really only 4 players who can compete.

Key looks much better but against better competition she will not be effective.

Lawrence and Amoore are both too small to go toe to toe with top SEC guards night in and night out imo.

Amoore might be able to score but we have 4 guards who could post her up every possession.

Curious what Kentucky’s plan is going forward. They will be relying on the portal for guards next season almost certainly. They graduate all their serviceable guards I believe. They’ll only return two hold overs from before the coaching change who play very little.

Only have one signee for 2025 a 6’1” W. They are going to have a big, slow roster from what I can tell.

They were after several of the players we signed in 2025.

Maybe they try the international route again?
