Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

The officiating in this LSU game has been horrendous. Like 20 fouls on Troy in the first quarter.

Guess who is out there?

The blonde from our MTSU game. She is a horrendous official. I do fear we will be seeing her in the SEC. Sad. She has no business at this level (or any level).

I looked at the box score to find blonde name....Tiffany Bird. 58 total fouls is ridiculous in a regulation womens basketball game.
🤬

I thought she really help MTSU in that game. Stopped a lot of our momentum several times and gave them points on the line they didn't earn.

Exactly. An official should not have that much influence over the game.

Last night the fouls were very uneven in the first half. They called every touch foul possible on Troy in the first half. Then made up for it in the second half and hosed LSU to even it out.

She is astonishingly bad. There truly needs to be a review process for these officials. Coaching staff should submit grades and there should be independent review. So many have no business calling games.

So how do these refs stick around? Aren’t they evaluated?

I’ve never seen one fired, especially the worst of them. Cameron Inouye has been a horrendous official for her entire career. They cut back on monitor reviews, thank god, otherwise her games went 2.5-3 hrs. She would spend 15 minutes at the monitor 5 times a game.

And they give her all the good games and act like she is great. So no I have no idea.

09, I learned years ago to not get wrapped around officiating or especially individual officials. It’s a wasted trip baby, nobody said nothing about locking horns with no Tigers man.

Watching Oklahoma. They will be a player this season. I realize some around here disagree. I’d like to know how much $ those people would bet against them on any given game.
Hard-nosed and strong. No opposing coach with the Sooners on their schedule is looking at that line and thinking "comfortable win for us."

One poster was hopeful we'd wear Beers out in trying to get up and down the floor with us, but I think she moves better than any big girl that size I've seen in a very long time. Courtney Paris was bigger than Beers, though.

I've heard they're having a really hard time hiring officials at all levels. Who needs it? It's an incredibly difficult job that gets harder and harder as players get bigger and faster. And half the world hates you at all times. Plus constant travel and have to stay in great shape. LOL pretty small applicant pool.

TCU put out a lot of $ to attract players, 10 players including Prince still with eligibility and Van Haley, and several others who have transferred twice. Merceneries rather than college students (IMO)

MTSU looks like a solid team beating an undefeated Tenn Tech fairly easy. However, they are 1 injury away from being average. Just zero on the bench, outside of that one player that played against UT.

Short bench hurt their FT shooting in our game. They have been mostly around 80% from the line but were 53% against us. The pace of play had them gassed and tired and they were missing free throws right and left.

Very fortunate for us considering they shot 28 of them that night with all the foul calls.

The only solution I see that could actually result in improving officiating is to increase the number of officials per game from three to five. Two officials (one for each end of the court) would be assigned to remain permanently stationed in the zone near the basket. They would not run up and down the court, so someone would always be down court. One of the officials would stay primarily at mid-court and wander no further down than either three-point line. The other two would be full rovers who have traditional coverage areas. Perhaps they swap coverage zones at halftime. But the point would be that it would prevent so many anticipatory calls being made because they can't actually get into position quickly enough.

We can all see that today's players are too fast and active for a lot of the officials to keep up with them. It's hurting the sport something awful. Not going to mention the game, but Tennessee got seriously hosed toward the end of a huge game last season that may very well have cost us that game. It was sickening.

Ugh.

Not sure that adding more bad officials would help. That would be further expanding the pool.
Yeah, but the slower officials could be stationed at each end, keeping them fresh and, hopefully, far less likely to be trying to make calls from bad angles because they're tired and thinking "SOMEthing must have happened -- better blow my whistle!"

The main goal is to never have a floor zone left unmonitored. Watch how often on fast breaks some officials are making judgements about whether a foul under the basket was an offensive foul or a defensive block from way out at the foul line or even further. Having someone permanently moored under each basket would ensure the many, many fast breaks some teams get each game are going to have a better chance of being fully seen by officials to be able to make the correct call instead of them not being in position to see it clearly.

Looks Azzi Fudd will be back on the floor tonight. The UConn IG just posted a hype video about it.

Stevie Wonder could have seen that one coming, Her coach is going to become the winningest coach of all time tonight. If I were a player on that team, even if I were in a hard cast up to my hips I'd be finding a way to get into that game to be able to say in the future that I did. I'm guessing players who never usually leave the bench except to perform their three-point-celebration-monkey duties will see court time in THIS game.

It should be one of the best nights ever for your program with so many alum coming back for it.
