Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

SC WBB is still the standard right now imo, I get that they lost to UCLA on their court earlier. SC has a crazy win % the past 10 years, UCLA is the beast until proven otherwise, but I would take Staley over Close in a tourney game on a neutral court. Maybe that’s just me.

Bama’s Zaay Green will be 25 when she graduates in the spring. Started her college career at Tennessee in Fall 2018.

Anyone know of a WCBB player who has played that long?
Ali Patberg I think was also 25 in her final season at Indiana. She was a freshman in 2015-16 and had her final season at Indiana in 2021-22.

SC isn’t going away easily folks. They still have game even without Watkins. Vic just pulled out his last few hairs trying to understand how Dawn always beats him, I can’t get enough of it tbh. I have no idea which team will win the crown this year, nobody does. But it’s gonna be fun watching and there are plenty of teams, 8-9 that could do it.

Four or five maybe. Gonna be tough for the LVs with two Ls already, but possible.

LV’s are not yet out of the conversation, lot of ball ahead. They will make the tourney obviously, and with a good seed could wreak havoc with their style, maybe even shock some. They are likely in the 8-9 teams that could pull it off if they figure out the defense between now and tourney time. I would also add a half court offense to their needs, that will come into play in the tourney as it always does when things slow down and defenses get better.

Commentary on the UCLA men's coach calling his players soft and delusionary. One member of the ESPN panel members I found interesting. With players being paid big money coaching them is different, they may resemble NBA style of play, as in soft, or believing they will soon be NBA stars. the point being made is that coaching semi-pros who may again be in the portal, requires a different style. With social media, (the Rutgers player who announced to her media fans that she wouldn't be playing) and their NIL funding - another issue in womens coaching.

BTW are you aware that PHS once took away the cellphone of the players for a week, she also removed them from their locker room for lack of effort. fast forward 2025, which of the two would not be tolerated today!
LOL! They would go barefoot and hungry before giving up a phone!😂😂😂

SMU outscores Pitt 32-7 in the first quarter then Pitt outscored SMU 28-0 in the 3rd quarter.

They were up 49-18 to start the half and didn't score again until the game was 49-49, a 31-0 run. Absolutely insane 2H collapse. Only scored 10 in the 4Q — 10 points after scoring 49 in the first half... 😬😬😬

I think this is the first Vol team in a few years that is the real deal, a real contender. Playing Oklahoma and LSU so close was a good indicator. They are blowing out non-elite teams as well they should. SC will be a good test as well as LSU on the road.

In the past, you would be exactly right.
I would say in today’s era it’s 12-16 teams that can get to the Final Four this season depending on how the brackets are set in March.
As I’ve said, the transfer portal and NIL changed the landscape of all collegiate sports. The resources and coaching has also improved.

This current era of collegiate sports with the transfer portal and NIL is more competitive than we’ve seen in many years. While there’s still favorites in WBB as in all sports there are other teams that outside of the favorites can compete with and beat the top teams.

Iowa isn’t going to be much of a win for us anymore pretty quick. Need to knock off at least a couple good teams in the SEC to keep ourselves in good position to host in the NCAA tourney.

I said the other day Iowa could realistically lose 6 in a row here and so far they are on pace to do so. Have dropped games to Maryland, Illinois and Indiana in the last week.

They have Nebraska, Oregon and Washington all coming up who are competitive and well coached.

Washington is the sleeper team in the Big 10 for me. Tina Langley is a dang good coach. They are a tough matchup for any team and have an excellent defense. Lost on the road to a good MState team today. Really interested in their matchup with Maryland next month. Will be interesting to see the former assistant take on the master, so to speak.
