Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

Sir Richard of UConn, Ah yes. So it was written, so it will stick.
UConn just lives in your head. Someone with no defense resorts to name calling. You have it so bad you had to reply to one of my posts two times. I can see you now sitting by your keyboard with the angst brewing.

It’s just for early drama I’m sure even when we beat them they will still somehow end up in Bridgeport the committee are not smart lol
Right now they will be a #3 seed in the Spokane region. But the whole thing has a ways to go before the final bracket

UCONN will play in Bridgeport and Albany. Trust me on this. $$$$$
It really doesn't make any difference. It's nice to have the short travel. But it's not like it's their first rodeo. Geno knows all the good restaurants at every site and sometimes it's nice to get away from all the commotion from the New York papers.

You are correct. It really doesn't matter. Not to Geno, or the team. Lots of fans would be sad, though. And lots of dollars lost without those fans packing the house to see them play.

I know the SC fans just love when I bring up officiating…..

This is as bad of a homer whistle as I’ve seen all season. Not a ton of fouls called in general but the difference between how the two teams are being officiated is apparent and a total detriment to Ole Miss.

But was it atypical of how each team is officiated throughout the season??

South Carolina actually leads the SEC in fewest personal fouls per game on the season. They are 25th nationally. Mississippi State is 2nd, and 33rd nationally, then after that Tennessee is 3rd in the SEC and 54th nationally.

Do the officials favor heavy on defense, post play, and rebounding Tennessee unfairly in their games?? It would seem odd that you would see it one way for one team, and another for the other, wouldn't it?

The overall rankings coming into Thursday's games are as follows:

(SEC / WBB)

South Carolina (1st / 25th)
Miss State (2nd / 33rd)
Tennessee (3rd / 54th)
LSU (4th / 55th)
UGA (5th / 59th)
Kentucky (6th / 66th)
Missouri (7th / 96th)
Alabama (8th / 159th)
Vanderbilt (9th / 169th)
Arkansas (10th / 202th)
Ole Miss (11th / 222nd)
Texas A&M (12th / 253rd)
Auburn (13th / 295th)
Florida (14th / 324th)

The per-game averages for SC and Ole Miss is 13.7 fouls per gm and 17.1 fouls per gm, respectively. So typically, the Rebels do foul more per game than the Gamecocks do, and not just for SEC games, or regardless of venue. Ole Miss is typically at the bottom of the conference in personal fouls, so it is NOT unusual for them to be called for a higher number of fouls than what the Gamecocks were called for......

The disparity in calls last night was 24 to Ole Miss 10 to SC.

We all know Ole Miss plays slap and grab defense. SC was no less physical inside though and got away with lots of contact Ole Miss simply wasn’t allowed.

A foul disparity like that affects the game immensely.

I don’t care how much it bothers the rest of you. I’ll complain about the SEC wbb officiating until the last time I sign off this site. It’s terrible, has been for years, and far too often affects the final outcome of games.

I will say this though: the 4th foul that Austin picked up - it apparently was on a touch foul on Saniya Rivers' layup attempt with 1:00 minute left in the 3rd qtr. But from the video I watched, Austin did not foul Rivers but cleanly blocked the attempt. The ball caromed sideways to where Boston retrieved it in the air, and then she was set upon. But by then, the foul had been established - the whistle was slow but the referee who made the call looked entirely at the sequence between Austin and Rivers, and held her hand up in the air before she blew the whistle - she held it up immediately after Rivers' shot attempt.

So the argument here is valid that this was a bad call. Then, when it was Boston and not Rivers who took the free throws, was another gaffe by the officials. The ref who made the call was over to the sideline explaining to Austin what the foul was for while Boston was stepping up to the free throw line.

Now, when Boston got the carom and tried to quickly fling the ball back towards the basket - the shot clock was down to the final second or so - she WAS legitimately fouled by two Rebels who hit her arms as she slung the ball up. But the ref who made the call did not call that action, and Austin was nowhere near where Boston was. Further, #5 for Ole Miss who was also defending Rivers when she attempted to make her shot, looked to have contact with one of her arms with Rivers' elbow as Rivers was attempting to make her shot. After the call, Austin seemed to debate with #5 if she should take the foul, but #5 seemed to refuse to do so, which is a shame considering Austin was essentially the Rebel's offense for the game.

So that sequence of officiating was downright awful all the way around......

Some people run their mouths too much without being checked… so full of yourself and nearly always wrong

And just in case anyone is confused, this is a UCONN fan ⬆️

Account created one day before the UCONN game last season. (edit: wrong it was this year. Still screams UCONN fan to me though). Showed up long enough for that then made a lovely appearance again this week.

Likely a teenage girl so I won’t be cruel, but don’t be fooled VolNation. They’re all about to show up and show out after our loss last night 🙄🙄

For those interested…

My Providence Argos (#16) play at home tonight against the Montana Tech Orediggers at 7 EST. According to the schedule, the stream will be on their YouTube channel, but the rest of the games this season have been on PlaySight. I’ll check both at game time. All free.

Argos win another one last night, extending their win streak to 12. Solid performances by both of their returning AAs and fifth year players.
PG Emilee Maldonado - 20p/6r/5a/2s
F Parker Esary - 20p/11r/1b/1s

Esary continues to build her resume and seems to be putting herself in a good position to accomplish the rare feat of being a 5x AA.

Next up is the rematch with Carroll at 4pm EST on Saturday in Helena. Despite losing back-to-back games against ranked conference opponents, Carroll only dropped one spot in the latest coaches poll, falling to #7.
