Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

Argos win another one last night, extending their win streak to 12. Solid performances by both of their returning AAs and fifth year players.
PG Emilee Maldonado - 20p/6r/5a/2s
F Parker Esary - 20p/11r/1b/1s

Esary continues to build her resume and seems to be putting herself in a good position to accomplish the rare feat of being a 5x AA.

Next up is the rematch with Carroll at 4pm EST on Saturday in Helena. Despite losing back-to-back games against ranked conference opponents, Carroll only dropped one spot in the latest coaches poll, falling to #7.
Have been traveling so behind on the news but did see The Argonauts lost the rematch with Carroll. Bummer. Saw one of the players hit 2k pints though. Do the Argonauts have a conference tournament?

No way. That's only a week away. She's not even cleared for practice, let alone game minutes. UConn now also has to deal with the fact that Dorka is day-to-day with a foot injury.

Honestly, there's no way Tennessee should lose this unless Tamari picks up two fouls in the first minute.

Totally agree about Bueckers. She is not going to be ready for Tennessee. I'm not even sure she will be ready before March.

So, Amb, I don't post on The Boneyard, like you do but I do read it and I saw a comment you made saying that the Arkansas game will be good in preparting Tennessee for the UConn game as they are very similar. I just don't see that comparison. Can you fill in more details?

I didn't say they are similar; I said they have similar strengths and weaknesses. They both rely on their perimeter players to win (post players are almost an afterthought in scoring), they want to run, and shoot a lot of 3's/attack the basket. Don't really have players that can create for themselves off the dribble. Neither are great rebounding teams. Probably the biggest difference is that Arkansas will put 5 players on the court that can all handle the ball, unlike UConn's posts. Arkansas will be good preparation to Tennessee for playing against multiple outside perimeter threats.

I agree, I think it’s highly unlikely she plays against us. I maintain it’s unlikely she plays the rest of the season.

For someone of that talent level, with a long pro career ahead, I can’t see any good reason to rush her back this season. Just seems obvious they don’t have the right pieces this year anyhow. I don’t think bringing her back is going to be the magic “fix it” button either. This team just doesn’t have good chemistry and hasn’t since the season started. Even before she was out I was saying that.

Juhasz is a big loss for them. She helps them a lot defensively with her size and is their second leading rebounder. They almost got out rebounded by Providence without her. She is a player I thought would give us a lot of trouble as we do not matchup with her well. TK can handle ONO but it was going to be a tough check for our 4 players to guard Dorka in the paint if she is available for our game.

I don't mind the Dye-Juhasz matchup. I think Alexus has a significant speed advantage and could get around Dorka and beat her to rebounds. She could also beat her off the dribble. If they isolate Dorka and post her up, that would be a problem, but they haven't done a great job of finding her when she's open. Stress reactions are a b!tch, so I don't think she will be a go. They will probably start Edwards instead, but don't have much of a bench behind her unless they go small and put Ducharme there.

This is one of those games where Tamari really has to be smart about contesting shots. Probably true for ONO as well, as neither team can afford to lose their starting post to foul troubles.

Thanks. You didn't provide details and I was wondering what you thought. No doubt that UConn will depend on their guards/wings to lead in scoring. The three top shot takers are Williams, Ducharme, and Westbrook. And no doubt with Fudd playing, those four will be relied on to lead UConn.

Arkansas takes about 30% more threes than UConn but Tennessee forces teams to win from the perimeter because of their interior defense so I would expect UConn to take close to 30, around 10 over their average.

The big difference is that UConn starts some size while Arkansas does not.

Arkansas runs out there 5'7", 5'8", 5'9", 6'1" and 6'5". And the 6'5" Wolfenbarger plays like a guard and not a forward. Small ball.

UConn starts 5'10", 5'11", 6'2", 6'5" and 6'5".

While UConn will shoot plenty from the outside, I don't think Tennessee will dominate the paint like they will against Arkansas. Other than Key having a couple of inches on Nelson-Ododa, and Horston on whoever is guarding her, UConn has a size adavantage.

Like a lot of games, it might just come down to the home court advantage. I would expect 12-13 K at the XL Center.

Should be an intense game for the players and the fans.

Was it reported it was a stress reaction? I didn't see that anywhere. If so, I don't expect her to be available for the Tennessee game.

I doubt she plays against us and if she does it’ll be limited minutes more than likely. Maybe not though.

Have not seen exactly what kind of foot issue it is. Always possible it just got stepped on badly and is bruised.

Offensively I agree that Dye has an advantage with her quick first step. Unfortunately the last 4 or so games we have not been able to get her the ball in positions that she can be successful. Teams have adjusted and have really taken away our inside game the last few weeks.

TK and Alexus have not been successful on offense the last several games. Teams are pressuring our ball handlers and taking away the easy post pass. We are panicking when we can’t get the ball inside and turning it over. Our game has to be played inside out. If we don’t get our inside game going it’s really hard for us to get anything on the perimeter.

Our post players have got to get position earlier and Walker/Horston have to make the pass over the top to get them the ball as soon as they have position. Dribbling it across halfcourt and then trying to setup the offense is killing us. We can play setup ball once we’ve opened a lead, but we can’t beat teams with our halfcourt offense. As evidenced by Auburn.

Tamari has not had a double figure scoring game in weeks. It is time for her to step up and stay on the floor. She’s going to pickup at least a couple cheap fouls every game from players flopping when she makes contact. Just is what it is, but it can’t dominate her thought process for the entire game.

Alexus defense pretty much stinks and has to get better. She should have been able to help in checking Coullibally but was totally useless. She was lost the entire time we were in the zone and kept giving up wide open set shot 3s to their 4 player. Not sure if it’s her back or a lack of desire but she has been really slow the last couple games.

How can you say should have when they did not play? Now, I agree, if you had said would have and it probably would not have been close, based on the way UConn is playing.

Because they did not say WOULD have they said should have and i'm sure it was based on the way uconn has been playing and how well SC has played.

Who had a foot issue?

Does CT always inform the masses as soon as a player is back to working out/practicing? I'm asking because I honestly don't know. If they are the polar opposites of Tennessee, then everyone would know if Bueckers was practicing already. But if they're as tight-lipped as Tennessee, noone will know anything until she's at the scorer's table ready to check in to a game.

Did everyone know what was going on with Azzi before she played?

Geno typically answers reporters as to what an individual player is doing. He'll say I don't know that's up to the trainers, working out in non-basketball stuff, running straight, doing basketball activities, doing some drills or the best one, yeah she's doing stuff with the team. The last decision is it's up to the player. That's the typical course of comments.

Azzi dropped a weight on her foot while lifting. That's per Cameron Brink

That makes no sense. How can someone should have done something that never happened? They would have if the game was not cancelled. Did I not cover the way UConn has been playing?

There's no comparison between ONO and Tamari. Key is bigger and stronger. As a reminder, UConn had a nice size advantage vs. SC and got obliterated on the boards. I expect the same to happen vs. Tennessee. The LVs rebound better as individuals and as a team. They have three players (Key, Houston, Dye) that rebound as well or better than ONO.

Size differences you noted between UConn and Arkansas aren't really that significant...2-3 inches. And both are still smaller (and less athletic) than Burrell/Horston at the wing.
