Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

Elena quit basketball. Transfered and played volleyball. She played for a year before deciding to come back to basketball. Very unique situation.

That is why you need to transfer to coaches that will tell you the truth and also do your homework on where players are transferring from and where they are getting to play. There are a lot of coaches out there lying to players. Not every player that gets in the portal is going to be successful, but at least they can make an educated decision. Coaches like Geno, Dawn and others don't like the portal because they know it is going to level the playing field in a few years and there are going to be probably double digit teams that can win the NCAA title.
I don't believe Dawn has any issues with the portal. She brought in two transfers Kaela Davis and Allisha Gray who played in a part in winning her only NCAA title so far. Geno been bashing the portal while using it himself. It's harder now to collect 5 star top 20 players and having them ride the bench for 2 or 3 seasons easing them into the rotation in junior and senior seasons.

Yeah, the great Delle Donne wasn't an appropriate example since she wasn't there long enough to base her decision on anything whatsover to do with basketball or Auriemma. She left because she hadn't realized until she arrived to Storrs that she wasn't ready to leave her special needs sister, a girl who was particularly attached to her on a level most people don't have with their siblings.

This is the main reason Delle Donne is my favorite non-Lady Vol in the W -- her compassion toward her sister. She definitely would have won national titles if she hadn't been so loyal to her sister. She gave all that up. For a kid that age, just ... wow.

And Larry Bird left Indiana before he got started because he wad homesick and the school was too big.

To each player, his/her situation is unique...to them. There are a lot of nuances, even for those who don't want to play for a coach. Coaching styles, too pushy/not pushy enough, perception of broken promises, coach's demeanor, lack of accessibility, assistant changes, offensive/defensive philosophies, etc. And that's just beginning to take in the multitude of other factors: academics, family problems, injuries, personal health, relationship problems, squabbles with teammates, feeling overlooked, etc. Some players may want to pursue a championship, go fo a grad degree in a program not offered at previous school, want to be close to home, want to play with close friend or sibling, or just eant a new challenge.

The point is that GA seemed to lump most if not all transfers into the same boat.

I’m actually thinking UConn and SC.

I tend to go with who has the better top end talent when it’s close in women’s basketball. Though Louisville and Stanford have very good teams and excellent coaches, they don’t have Aliyah Boston or Paige Bueckers.
Yes, most folks picking SC and Stanford, but would not be surprised if either UConn or Louisville won tonight.

Eh just sounds like more posturing from Geno. Trying to scare his own players out of transferring.

Every single one of those players will likely find a new home and for most it will be a better fit. Geno doesn’t like anything he can’t control and the portal creates chaos for coaches.
Last year about 16% of mcbb transfers didn't find a new home.
I would think the women's side would be similar.

Duplicate

out of 1,159 entrants in the portal last season all but 56 found a new school. 26 opted to return to their current school, 5 turned pro, 21 ended their playing career and 2 “other”

So removing the 26 who didn’t transfer and 5 who turned pro only 21 players “didn’t find a new school”

So just over 2% didn’t end up at a different school. That’s not at all a catastrophe and probably a good portion of those that ended their playing career did so due to injury.

Defend Geno all you want, he’s a pompous a** and spouts off all the time without actually making any sense. As he did in this case…

I wasn't defending anyone. I knew what the % was on the men's side and thought it would be similar on the women's side. Evidently, they're not.
I couldn't find stats on transfers for wcbb. May I ask where you got your stats from ?

All the Grad transfers and P5's will find a new home. Some of the mid-majors may not but most will.

In the UConn/Stanford game who will Wilson guard(great defender) and who will guard Jones? I am sure that Stanford is going into the post early to get UConn posts in foul trouble.

If Stanford goes cold from the outside, UConn can win this game
