Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

Just watched. While Carson-Newman were overmatched… This is different by a mile. Lots of unforced turnovers and completely outsized and skilled.. CN is actually a good D2 team. Ohio State actually didn’t look overly impressive but they have good players. I think we win by 15-20 and almost everyone potentially plays again. At least 6-7 minutes.

Our guard play is led by Powell who is going to HAWK Sheldon down. Cotie McMahon is good but Jordy or Rickea are going to introduce her to college ball.
Hopefully we come to play we should beat them on the boards by at least 20. I don't see anyone that can guard Jackson or Horston or even Powell. I would just run them off the three point line keep Key inside to make layups and inside the lane shots and we should be fine. Notre Dame College is an unforced turnover machine.

Correct. It will be a tough game but I think we pull it out pretty handedly. The have no real post presence so look for that to go in our favor as well.

And we'll have fresh legs the whole game, if they try and run us down (already hard enough with Rickea and Jordy on the floor).

I don’t see us letting up defensively at all. Jordy/Rickea/Tamari all have something to prove this season and are going to play like first round picks. Powell/Franklin are elite players who want to win. Walker is in her natural spot and is able to play completely free. Marta/Sara/Tess/Justine are SHOOTERS. I’m ready for us to play next week so we all know for sure just how good this team currently is and become excited for how much better we WILL be in March.

All they have going for them is home court and two or three girls that are very good three point shooters. We should win every quarter by five or more points, but you never know how a game will go. Just looking at their starting five you would think we could score inside anytime we wanted to with Key, Horston, and Jackson. They may try to pack it in the paint then we will see what our three point crew can do. See no reason we can't score 80 to 85 in that game.

OSU's leading rebounder averages 5 boards a game....think about that. This game will get out of hand quickly and UT will be playing everyone in the 4th.

Interesting choice for their first ambassador. Not impressed with her at all, total ball hog in the McD AA game. Will be interesting to see if this pays off for Jordan…

It’s an McD AA game . Not a real game heck folks claimed CP3 ball hogged during her MCD AA game and look how she turned out. I’m impressed with KiKi Rice and so should the entire country. Her speed and playmaking ability is something the women's game has yet to see from a player with the ball in their hands imo.

Hopefully, Benedict got something out of it, too. I was glad to see that C-N players and coach felt that their experience against us was relatively positive and will help them with their conference play.

Looking forward to the matchup between two healthy Gamecocks and Lady Vols teams. Hope it's #1 vs. #2 like this coming weekend's fbll game.

Dipper,
It was only a scrimmage, and against a D2 team, but Bree Hall looks like a big contributor this year along with Feagin. I suspect those two will see 15 minutes or so per game this season, perhaps more for Hall as her position has more opportunity right now. Hall has upped her game, super smooth player.

As for the true freshman, Cooper and Watkins will both likely play around 5-10 minutes per game with Cooper maybe getting even more minutes due once again to more opportunity in the backcourt than the front court for PT this season. The freshmen look especially impactful this year compared to last year's group which was slow out of the gates to contribute. Cooper should be 1st Team All Freshmen SEC, she is a future star.

Same way with USA basketball. Not a team player.

There's only 200 player minutes in a game. Bree and Talaysia are gonna have more opportunities at minutes than Sania and Ashlyn because of the logjam of bigs

How’d Raven Johnson look?

How’d Raven Johnson look?
She was held out. Still wearing a knee brace and they are bringing her back slowly. Cook played PG instead of SG some, and Amihere also played some PG (the transfer from GT, Fletcher, was held out also as she is still not quite 100% after last season’s foot injury which kept her out all season.

I suspect Raven‘s minutes will go up incrementally as the season progresses if no setbacks. ACL’s take time, my guess is Raven plays a bunch this season, and well, but doesn’t get back her game 100% until next season, that’s how those injuries seem to play out. Players take time to get back all the confidence and free play they exhibited prior to knee surgeries like that.

I suspect Cook will spend plenty of time at PG this season, which she is good at and which she wants to do to prep for the WNBA imo. If Raven comes back faster than expected, she should share the PG spot with Fletcher mostly. It’s still not a settled question due to the injuries Raven and Fletcher are coming off. Cooper is gonna get minutes at SG…

The real interesting playing time considerations come from the front court, where Boston, Saxton, Cardosa, Feagin, Amihere and even Watkins all seemingly could compete for All SEC honors with enough minutes. Beal plays SF also, and her minutes still seem guaranteed, so the front court players will need to produce to earn their minutes. Feagin looks ready for a big jump. I am personally not confident Cordosa has the aggressiveness to ever be dominant, more of a complimentary piece until she shows a mean streak imho. Feagin might jump her this year as she is showing that aggressiveness in her second year.

200 minutes is indeed the hard cap, and as usual, spreading the minutes between 12 players that deserve and or need minutes is a challenge (I count 11-12 on the team in the category of needing and deserving quality minutes this year). Performance will decide how the minutes get shared, but Dawn is aware of the need to develop Hall, Feagin, Cooper and Watkins this season while balancing the team performance with the 4 starters back along with Cordosa, Amihere, Johnson and Fletcher.

UT is facing the same dilemma and it’s a good problem as long as the HC can keep chemistry in tact.

I’m like Beetlejuice. Did somebody call lol?

Off season hibernation almost over. Can’t wait to see how they look this weekend. Horston and Jackson will be a real situation for opposing teams!
Lol missed your post! Welcome back and you’re most certainly correct, they’re going to be quite a problem!
