Non-Lady Vol news 2018-19

Quite a rookie campaign with the Sky she had though.

They went 13-21 Diamond played pretty well, but they still weren’t successful. A successful basketball team is more than one player.

Which is exactly the problem SC is having. Cooper is just over 40% from 2 and 25% from 3. That is not nearly efficient enough for a volume shooter. It kills your team. Players run the floor just for one person to put up a quick shot and they’re back on defense, it’s as good as a turnover. She’s taken almost more than double the shots of any other player on their team. If you plan to shoot that many shots you better be a 50/40/80 player or you’re doing more harm than good.

Edit: I did the math for you if she’s 50/40/80 she averages almost 24 points a game as opposed to 16. Just for comparison Ionescu is shooting 50/54/81, has taken fewer shots and is averaging 19 a game. Also has 43 assists to 15 turnovers compared to coopers 19/13. Now THAT is what a star looks like.

I saw Wilson was fine, she was cleared and discharged, traveled home with the team last night, still a very scary situation.

I was watching that Louisville game and Diop injured that knee a few minutes prior, went to the locker room and then came back out. She should never have been back in the game, she was on the floor all of 15 seconds before it gave out and she limped off. Very sad for her, I watched her play a few times at Pitt and she was a super athlete, she will be missed in their rotation this season.

Texas has taken another hit to their roster. SR guard Lashann Higgs suffered a torn ACL in their game against Quinnipiac, and is out for the season.

Really impressed with the youngest Mabrey sister, Dara, playing at Virginia Tech. Averaging almost 15 a game with 3 assists. Shooting 57% from the field, 54% from three and 88% from the line. Pretty mature play for a true freshman.

Soccer - the four women #1 seeds are in the final four and three of the #2 seeds (including UT) made it to the final 8. so ranking was very good in that sport

The number one ESPN recruit H. Jones is set to announce today. Will it be Uconn after the disappointment of not signing Boston, Stanford the home state school which would put them at a maximum of 15 players, Oregon, the place with the ugly gym floor, but lots of playing time available or will Dawn nab the final piece in South Carolinas great recruiting class. Notre Dame is the other finalist, but many feel she will not go there

I could not find an announcement time.

11 am.

Don't really care where she goes, as long as it's not UConn or SC. UConn for obvious reasons, and SC because that will just put them over the top in the SEC for the next four years...

Congrats to the Stanford Cardinals and Haley Jones. She did right with this decision! Bay gal staying in the Bay!
Boy, did UConn strike out. :p

I was looking at their roster too, they will have only 8, maybe 9 returning if Camara comes back for her final year of eligibility. Only 3 of those returning are playing significant minutes. I feel Camara will go play as a grad transfer somewhere else or just forgo her final year if she's already graduated, she has barely played since she transferred. If she does not return they will have only one true inside player unless they pick up a grad transfer from somewhere. Geno is a legendary coach, but next year could be rough for them.

Funny thing is they are still getting UConn treatment right underneath her announcement they have an article about UConn on espn.

While I am not comparing UConn to UT I remember CHW having the same thing happen in 2016 (of course she followed it up with some good recruiting classes).

Also we will get to see the #1 and #2 players go at it for 4 years if we continue to th home and home series with Stanford.

They do have one recruit number 33 Aubrey Griffith so if everybody stays they will have ten players next season.

Almost all guards or very small forwards like Walker. My gut says Camara is out of there, just like Stevens (who they have basically deleted from their website which I find odd). If that is the case Nelson-Ododa is their only interior player, that is a big ask to rely on a sophomore for all of your inside defense and scoring with no back-up. Have to just hope she isn't injured either or they'll be reallllyy undersized.

According to the boneyard, Camara stepped on a teammates foot this week and may be out a few weeks for hyper extended knee. That girl cannot catch a break.

UConn will be good next year, but will basically be relying on Dangerfield, Williams, Walker and ONO to carry the team, with no real bench to speak of. Those four will pretty much need to play close to 40 minutes against any team that's not a cupcake. They will be ripe for the upset, and have no margin for error regarding fouls or injuries. Next season might be the first time since pre-Maya Moore that they aren't on a short list for NC contender. Heck, even Tennessee might be able to pull out a win (wouldn't count on it, but much more in the realm of possibility compared to if they landed Haley Jones). The Boneyard will need a support group if they don't land some instant contributor transfers or JUCOs in the upcoming months. Who knew that schadenfreude could be so delicious?

I strongly suspect that Geno is considering retirement. That may also have had some sort of impact on the recent lack of commitments to their program. WCBB dynamics are changing. The types of players coming out of high schools do not really fit the profile that Geno has long used as a standard for his recruits. More options via better coaches and programs have also cut into the numbers as well.

I think Geno was shocked that Stevens did not stay one more year to develop her game. Players that buy into his program and are willing to put in the time and effort to develop are getting scarcer and scarcer. John Wooden some years after he retired stated that he would not be able to coach the new group of players coming out of high school. Holly also stated that players are different today than they were during Pats time and she would have difficulties maintaining her program as it was. Whether you like Holly or not she is right. I suspect that Geno is considering if he even wants to coach anymore if he can not do it his way.

I suspect Uconns high level last minute recruits from the 2018 class were not reflective of the programs recruitment strength. Recruits usually committed to Uconn early. Those last minute commitments were probable due to the lack of other recruits which provided more opportunities for playing time and starting potential. This off season will be key to Uconns program. Geno will have made his decision by then.

Very nice, thoughtful, post. I agree with you wholeheartedly that the game has changed. For those of us who follow women's basketball nationally and not just the Lady Vols it is pretty obvious. I also believe the change in the players is why you see more coaches going overseas to recruit. Kelly Graves has been very successful with recruiting in Europe and Australia. The players I've seen coming out of Europe and Australia have better fundamentals, better attitudes, and appear to be coachable. So many of the top recruits these days get such a big head in high school and AAU from people gassing them up they don't feel they need to improve, so they don't.

Geno wont retire until he passes Pat's winning record. So we are looking at about 2 more years.

Wiki says he's only 64, so he could get that huge salary for quite a few more years before hanging up the whistle to spend the rest of his life getting schnockered by 11 a.m. every day.
