I think adding the wolfpack would be perfect. they would open a new market in north carolina( the fastest growing markets in the USA) and it would also keep the conference southern and would add a good basketball program also. i think they might jump to get more love in the their own state and it would be perfect for the sec...

new markets....
would add a eastern team to counter balance adding a western team..

bam bam boom..

what do you all think?

except that both the SEC & the ACC just told WVU "take a hike; we're not going to be interested"

i think that is just PR spin. there is no way the ACC would want pitt and syracuse but not be interested in WVA..they are good in football AND basketball... no way

it wasn't a PR spin, we did it too.

there's too much baggage that they bring that the neither of the conferences want....WVU got shot down by both conferences without either even having to take a vote (that's what's the most telling); it wasn't a "we're not looking at expanding at this time but might be open to expansion later" like the SEC tried to do to prevent aTm lawsuits; this was a flat out "we don't want you" pretty much to their faces;

there's not anything that'd have to be spun out of PR fears here anyways

....and yes they could, because of Pittsburgh and New York City

Terrible academics, a horrible reputation as a fanbase, and little pull outside of a pathetically talent-bare state.

Pitt and Syracuse actually have value. West Virginia does not.

NC State would be an awesome fit. I can see them making the jump too, except the 20 million dollar buyout clause is going to be steep. They already have a rivalry with South Carolina and Raleigh is only 5.5 hours from Knoxville, Colombia and Athens. We could get our conference game out the way with them next year in the first game in ATL.

The ACC is a lot more serious about academics than WVU. WVU belongs more with the Sun Belt schools in that regard. They would be, by far, the worst academic school in the ACC.

Of the "realistic" candidates that have been tossed around here lately, NC State and Missouri are on the top of my list. I think it would add almost as much to the conference's footprint as Texas AM does.

It gets us into North Carolina and is 800 miles away.

Had a brutally long post in another thread about this scenario. I agree, NC ST or a Virginia makes sense for us and them I think. Win-win. WVU is s joke, they offer nothing to the SEC on any level.

Add FSU, and be done with it. Or have they already said, 'Nah, we good,'?

I agree with this. Would love to see it happen, but the buyout pretty much makes it a no go. Also, despite UNC's insistence to the contrary, NC State thinks they have a rivalry with UNC. And politically, I'm not sure it would fly.

People always mention UNC, but NC State is the bigger school, and it's the land-grant institution in the state.

They have a large fanbase/share of both the Raleigh and Charlotte TV markets. It would be a better grab than Missouri with St Louis/KC.

I'd be down with the Wolfpack or Hokies over the Tigers of Missouri.

One thing about "unaffordable" buyouts: how many phantom coaches/ AD's is UT carrying now, for a total of how much money? Same at other schools, although not to such an absurd degree as here.

When a school wants something badly enough, they find the money.

(No info/ no opinion on whether the Wolfpack would want to leave the ACC.)

Never happen...Nobody is gonna pay the 20 million to leave the ACC.

So what? Lots of teams have OOC rivals, including a good percentage of the SEC East.

Actually, the $20m is less than Texas A&M's buyout. NC State would make that money back quickly with the revenue they stand to gain from membership in the SEC.

The buyout is a speedbump, not a hurdle.

If anything, the SEC might help pay it or waive fees just to help NC State out. They stand to make that much from the new inroads to the banking and research industries in the Triangle and Charlotte areas.

Their bball program is not that good but they like being a part of the nc rivalries even though they are the red headed step child of the bunch. they are not coming.
