Not a blog....but a thought

The lineman was Malcolm Sheppard and the call was not for the hit but the fact that he pumped his fist and shouted at the player on the ground. It was seen as taunting. I dont like the rule but it is the rule. Did you see how the Florida kicker made his team stop celebrating to avoid a call? NCAA football is becoming the No Fun League jr.

Pre-Instant Replay....
Too bad those other calls weren't reviewable Saturday.
If Florida wins a national title -- which I don't think it will -- it would come with an asterisk for me.
I tend to remember when teams get cheated, or are the beneficiary of some officiating...
Twins-Tigers hit batsman no-call -- changes the whole complexion...
Twins guy hits the ball down the line, woulda beat Yankees, but again, the rich got richer...
And don't even get me started with NASCAR, which I covered for about 16 years....
Don't forget the 5th down play in the Colorado/Missouri game several years ago. That's one I'll never forget.

I see Tebag pumping his fist and jumping around like a fool all the time. Where are the flags for that?

My biggest problem is the accountability of the refs. I know Slive stated a couple weeks ago after the Ga celebration penalty, that they handle it behind closed doors. He stated they did'nt need to be persicuted publicly , and that they are graded and diciplined for the bad calls. But we as fans deserve to know they are being addressed.

To the OP, I was waiting for ESPN to say something about the bad call-no call issue too. No suprise that not a word was mentioned about it.

No, but I just heard Mark May make the comment "home cooking?" to Lou Holtz while discussing the extra second the refs put on the clock for the Golden Domers yesterday...

Nothing said about the bad calls during the Florida-Razorbacks highlights by May, Holtz or Davis....

But not surprising....

He doesnt yell at the other team. That is the sticking point. I hate Florida and this rule is stupid. But you have GOT to be smart enough to hold your mouth when you know the rule.

here's an idea, since you feel so strongly about this griff and since we are all in agreement with you that it was some fishy officiating, why don't you use your public forum to let your opinion be known...write a blog.

I don't get that with Tebow. As ticky-tacky as they've been with that call, Tebow goes apes*** for a full 30 seconds because of a measly 1st down run! And he's done it his entire career. It makes him look like a clown, but more importantly you have to flag that if you are going to flag AJ Green for looking into the crowd and Charles Scott for raising two hands in the air for a full 3 seconds. It's embarrassing to me how bad the SEC refs have gotten.

The rule is regarding drawing attention to yourself. Not simply taunting the other team.

it doesn't matter if it's directed at another player (see UGA/LSU game). Tebow does the same thing and it fine since he's the chosen one

And if any other player in the Nation flips the ball at a defender like The Chosen One so often does...it's a 15- yarder every time.

If you knock a player on their ass and shout at them you will get flagged everytime if the Ref sees it and its for taunting. Yes drawing attention to yourself is also a flag and Tebow should get hit with that often but he doesnt.

i have no idea what he's yelling because i can't read lips but the spirit of the rule is not to police the content of the taunt but to do away with the taunt all together...by running around the field and pumping his fists after a 3 yard dive play for a first down he is showing up the other team and drawing attention to himself.

That flag yesterday was already in the air before an Arky player had time to say anything.

If that PF call is the one you are referring to...

That's true and should happen. But that doesnt change that if you do what Sheppard did you will get a flag. They let QB run their mouth more than any other position. Mallett was running his mouth at defenders all game just like Tebow does and he also never got hit with a flag. Is it right? No. But as a player you have GOT to be smart. Sheppard is a team leader and knows better. He cost his team.

Obviously but your post made it sound like you were under the impression it was okay as long as he wasn't directing it toward the other team. That's not the case per the official rules.

Personally, I think the rule is stupid and should be called much looser than it has been so far this year. But you can't call little crap like they have been calling and then not flag Tebow for what he does IMO.

Agree. But most of these officials need to realize how the emotion of the game is going. If you are up 49-0 and make a sack and celebrate.. flag his arse. If it's a huge rivalry game and you score with 1 minute to go to put your team ahead... let the kid have his moment.

Much in the same way you see MLB umpires allowing for more banter from Managers when in the Playoffs. There is a time and a place to swallow the whistle and keep your hand off the flag. And the SEC officials have not grasped that concept, and even NCAA officials as a whole.

Every game has one or two calls that may have determined the outcome.

But-- the UF game yesterday had 4-5 calls/non-calls in the last 8 minutes of the game that all went for UF.

Total shame.

Future UF teams need to work the SEC office about how Tebow gets to cheerlead on the field for 30 seconds after a big play and not get a flag.

If said player gets knocked on his ass for trying to take cheap shot 20 yards away from the play then he gets what he deserves - unless he plays for UF, then it's your fault and your team gets a 15 yard penalty.

QB's talk trash everytime after a defender lays them out on a cheap shot roughing the passer penalty - same thing.

So to watch that game getting taken away from them by some horrendous calls -- and non-calls -- in the final minutes was sick.

So call them out, Griff. Make the SEC, and the NCAA, take notice. Demand accountability for poor officiating. Demand accountability for the leagues that allow poor officiating to continually determine outcomes.

You've got the forum; use it.
