Notes from 8/26 Press Conference (CCM and Maymon)

It was always comical when opposing fans criticized us for being greatful that Barton was coming and labeling him a true PG. I don't know how far we go this year, but Barton is much better than what we have had as a PG. Especially above the shoulders. Barton doesn't need to be a great scorer- just limit the TO's, lead, and hit the open shot.

This is a perfect scenario for Thompson and Austin to take over next year.

I hope CCM cuts Thompson loose on the lobs. That has been a missing element in the offense since Maze left. He was one of the best lob pass guys to play in Knoxville. With McRae, Richardson and Hubbs on the team, the lob should be a great weapon.

I didn't listen but pulled these tidbits from twitter coverage of the presser:

CCM: Richardson is the 4th option offensively right now.

CCM: Darius Thompson has great instincts. Good at instinctively throwing lobs at the basket.

CCM: Players did a good job of building relationships with Barton to make it easier for him to step in and be a leader.

CCM: Barton has been a hard worker who doesn’t make excuses.

CCM: McRae has has added 8 pounds of muscle.

CCM: Maymon looks like “the same ole Jeronne” to him. No questions surrounding his availability.

Maymon: Barton is aggressive on both ends. Will be a floor general.

Maymon: Says he’ll definitely be 100% for the first game. Feels good now with no pain.

I wish Trae the best, but he had some qualities that you just can't have at this level from a pg and leader. The truth hurts. We may miss his ft's down the stretch, but players will feed off the new guys and I felt better about next years team the minute I knew we basically traded Trae for Barton and Thompson. Who wouldn't make that trade was the question for me.
It will still play out on the court one way or another, but I don't expect the same hypnotizing lulls that cost you games and cost you an ncaa birth

And you have two big hippos to clear space/set backscreens. Moore would be another one that can go get it, if we will just set it up and use it.

Not every time, just to catch the defense sleepin.

Exactly, a weapon of opportunity. Also, great in the fast break. And, yes, Moore would be a great target as well.

Is that Shaq and Carlus Groves going at it in your avatar?

Yes sir. Was at that game and afterward Groves was instantly my favorite UT player.

Another quote I left out because it seemed a bit redundant was that Martin also said with both of the PGs he wouldn't have to specifically call lob plays for the PG to throw them. Sounds like it could be something he's going to give them freedom to do as long as they execute.

I was on the sideline for that game and shot in the finals of a 3 point competition at halftime. Won a pair of UT basketball shoes.

It's been so long since we've had players to execute a back-door lob that I don't know if we have a player on the receiving end that can convert, other than McRae and probably Hubbs. Missing a little bit of the athleticism UT teams had with Prince, T. Smith, and Hopson. Either one of those three could pull one in from within four feet of the rim.

Moore, Richardson, Davis, Thompson to name a couple more.

With enough space our backup pg could convert a lob. We just don't need to be doing it just to do it. We need to use our bigs to set screens. And we need the 2's and 3's to sell that back-cut. But just catching and finishing I would say McRae, JRich, Moore, Hubbs, Davis, Thompson and Edwards could do it.

I forgot about Q he can get up. Maybe even Reese.

I like all our players, but they're not as atletic as the three I mentioned earlier.

I think you're underselling Richardson a little....he doesn't show it often, but I've seen him throw down some absolutely nasty dunks. The others I would agree with you not being on the same level though.

Are you talking about his RTL dunks? He can CRAM it, I just don't think he's had the situations. Who remembers that horrible dunk-miss Richardson did this year? I can't recall against who though..

Lol I forgot about McRae, WOW

Yea...

McRae, Stokes, Maymon Richardson would be my guess...that's great news IMO.

It means Richardson has continued to improve, and the 3 point numbers from AIA may actually carry over to the season.

If Richardson is a better scoring option then Hubbs then 2 things 1. Our offense should be lethal 2. There's no way Richardson is losing his starting spot

Maymon b4 Stokes...

Doubt it. If it was the old Maymon possibly, but I'm betting stokes averages more shots and points than Maymon this year.

CM said Maymon was 100%. Who would you trust more taking the last shot of the game? Who would you want on the foul line?

I don't think Martin has said those words in that order; if he has I missed it.

As for last shot of the game, and foul line...neither one, I'd want McRae.
