Notes from 8/26 Press Conference (CCM and Maymon)

It's so hard not to be really optimistic about this season. I'm going to temper expectations but I won't be surprised to be top 15 or up by the end of the regular season barring any injuries.

Martin talking about having to call plays just to execute a simple lob from the pg position is telling. Sounds to me like we have some pg's that can just go out and ball now without having to look to the coach everytime after walking the ball up and standing 35 feet out waiting for directions

I don't think Martin has said those words in that order; if he has I missed it.

As for last shot of the game, and foul line...neither one, I'd want McRae.

If Maymon is truly back to his old form , then he should get the ball with the game on the line. How many clutch shots did he make 2 years ago? Go back and watch the 1st Memphis game that year. You can't go wrong with McRae either. It's nice to have
options.

Bad example. Maymon air balled the last shot of that game.

32 points 20 rebounds. I'll give him a pass on the air ball.

But you're talking about who you want to have the ball with the game on the line. I didn't say Maymon is bad, I said that was a bad example. Yeah we wouldn't have been in the game if not for Maymon, but I agree with BTO in that I want McRae with the ball.

I remember Maymon hitting the last shot to win or tie a game a few times. I feel more comfortable with Maymon over Stokes in that situation. Maymon handles the ball better, and is better from the line. But you are right, McRae will be option 1, and Maymon 2

Just win big, and it won't matter!!!!

I'll also say that the guy you want taking your last shot, and the guy who's a better scoring option aren't always the same person. That's very true in this scenario, like I said I fully expect Stokes to get more shots than Maymon, but do I want Stokes taking THE last shot? No. If he was to be fouled that would be asking for a heart attack, so while he's a great scoring option for 39 minutes of a game, he may not be the best last shot option.

If we are talking scoring option which is what I was referring to, then I think FGA will go in this order:

McRae, Stokes, Maymon, Richardson, Hubbs, Barton

Can you refresh my memory because outside of the Memphis game I don't recall any?

it still has to show during the season, and there will be obstacles so we'll see how it all turns out.
I always felt CM thought some of the same things I did about Trae leading this team, and is as happy as I am to have 2 pgs with handles, energy, aggressiveness and effort on both ends, not to mention a little instinct as in throwing up an easy lob rather than throwing a one handed pass at a cutter's back foot.
Everybody that has played the game knows that energy from a leader bleeds down to teammates, and a lack thereof does the same. Many times, that's the difference in a basketball game where ncaa births come down to a few possessions each game. When it's that tight, you can't risk having a leader that is liable to go to la la land and take the team with him.

If Maymon is 70% ft shooter, either one will do. Inside out would be easier as well and see how the play develops. If he is 60% or less, you can't do it, or you will keep teams in the game from the ft line. Go to someone else and get him on the boards for a quick putback opportunity

CCM did not say that Maymon was 100% now; he said he would be by the season start. However, he said it's the same old Maymon but in same sentence he said he did not have the pop he had before injury and that he had lost a bunch of weight.

It's been awhile Patrick, how goes?

no basketball player coming off of no competitive play 1-2 years is going to step in and be 100% back anytime soon, and he won't get his basketball legs until he runs and jumps a lot to get them back.
People used to wear those Kramer goofy shoes to extend their calves or something in hopes of increasing their verticals back in the day. The kids that could jump just spent time playing basketball and jumping.
