NTSB recommends ban on use of cell phones or texting while driving

Sure they have caused distractions and accidents.

And if people were lighting up with the kind of prevalence we see with cell phone usage, or if listening to the radio required you to hold it to your head or at least in one hand as you thumb out a message, you'd have a point.

But the point would simply be that those other things should be reconsidered, as well. That we don;t act the way we should in other contexts is a pretty weak argument against a ban of cellphone usage that makes perfect sense.

So what would happen with mp3 players that are wired to your stereo, which require you to use it EXACTLY as though you thumbing out a text in order to pick music? Howabout someone opening up a new pack of cigarettes (if you don't smoke, this requires one to unwrap the top, pull off the cellophane as well as the foil lining the inside of the pack)? Picking and changing CD's requires 5-10 seconds of one hand. What about eating while driving?

Are these comparable enough for you?

The point I'm making is that this law being passed would only open the door for a ridiculous overhaul of driver etiquette. Wrecks happen. You aren't going to prevent incompetent driving or the idiocy of the average person.

Going back to the original theme of the thread. We assume a seatbelt law will save lives. How do we know this? It seems like common sense, but truth of the matter is even the most seemingly necessary rules and regulations are probably unnecessary.....have you ever questioned the necessity of traffic lights? Probably not. Guess what? You probably should. Spontaneous order arises when you don't treat people like they are dumb robots. Check out this case study for a town in England that removed all traffic signals, not just lights:

This only works with people who have been trained how to properly drive on roads with some uniform rule of law.

Just passed by a TN state trooper near Cleveland typing on his dash mounted laptop at 75mph. Should that be banned?

Driving with my 5-year old niece for 20 miles on the freeway yesterday made me realize that we should forget about cell phones and ban freaking kids.
