NTSB recommends ban on use of cell phones or texting while driving

Human beings make many more calculated decisions than we realize. We assess risk as best we can and act accordingly. This is why seat belt laws haven't had the results policy-makers had hoped. The reason is when you wear a seat belt, you are essentially lessening the cost of an accident. As anybody who has studied economics can tell you...if you decrease the cost of any activity, you'll wind up with more of it.

Nobody gets in their vehicle and consciously thinks, "Since I'm wearing a seat belt I can afford to drive more recklessly", but that's exactly what happens subconsciously. If you don't believe me, think of the example of the guy who owns a Tahoe and a Metro. He won't necessarily think about it, but one vehicle is a lot safer than the other, so he's probably going to take more caution in the Metro.

If you really want to put a stop to fatal traffic accidents, remove all seat belts and require all manufacturers to put a blade on the steering wheel facing the driver. Under those circumstances there would be no accidents.

you don't have to go to such extremes, just make getting an American driver's license as difficult to obtain as a European driver's license

Go to the Memphis DMV. It is enough to make you never want to go through a license experience again.

In some states it is pretty difficult. Hawaii required 100 hours behind the wheel driver's education, plus a graduated license from 17 to 18. They restricted the number of passengers in the car and prohibited the use of any distractors--even loud music could bring them a traffic citation. I agree with all of this as a person is gaining experience behind the wheel.

We added the requirement for each of our new driver's to have to do so many trips in an expanding radius from the house. That is they had to do 25 trips within a 5 mile ring, 25 within a 10 mile, 25 within 20 miles before they could drive downtown Honolulu. Of course they also had to demonstrate they knew how to jump start the car, change a tire etc. This worked as both of my older daughters have exemplary records and I plan on using the same techniques when the rest get to the right age.

Because we took the time to train them, I'm confident they are able to use their cars and all the electronic gadgets in the cars (GPS, cell phone, etc) while operating the car safely. I don't think they should be restricted from doing so just because other people don't bother to do these things. Especially since I taught them how to recognize bad drivers and how to drive to avoid accidents.

Go to Covington. You drive someone around the block, they take your picture, and you're good to go. I felt dirty for being given a license after that "test".

On way to my sons school when I notice a bumper sticket that says dont text, it saves lives and their tag was dnt text.

How many NTSB board members talk on the phone while driving...and will continue to do so? I realize this cannot really be answered, but it is relatively easy to accurately speculate on.

Yeah, never happens. I am totally making it up.

I'm sure nobody's ever found themselves in a wreck due to a hardy sneeze, or while changing their radio, or lighting their cigarette.

Face it. This reasoning you're using is retarded. If everyone went along with it, cars would drive us.
