And the word for the day is Nugatory:

1) of no real value; trifling; worthless.
2) of no force or effect; ineffective; futile; vain.
3) not valid.

You can't make this stuff up.

Nugatory..would describe a lot of our posts. I think it will be my new favorite words.

Guys this not about some allure that confounds us. This is about salesmanship combined with opportunity. And face it, Freeze and Sweeney are damn good salesmen along with Butch.

And who does not like the latest tech gadget? Or hot trend? Or whatever? I don't care what "space" you are in, when your inventory is hot, you are in a good spot. And if you have a personality to boot, well, that's a highly desirable combo.

I am not astounded here. And considering these are young men prone to swaying in the wind at the latest whim, it's not hard to understand.

I don't like it but it is, for now, our new normal (Ole Miss, Clemson, etc.) You better get used to it.

So now we are the only SEC school with no 2017 commits. Man we should be really pumped!

From another thread - Summary: We gonna be ok

A few random football recruiting statistics/facts:

-The last 3 UT recruiting classes (2014-2016, Butch Jones' first 3 full recruiting classes) have signed a combined total of 46 prospects rated as 5* prospects and/or 4* prospects. That total is the highest number UT has signed in a 3-year period in school history (Rivals.com began rating football prospects in 2002). The breakdown is: 11 total (1-5* & 10-4*) signed in 2016 class, 17 total (4-5* & 13-4*) signed in 2015 class, & 18 total (2-5* & 16-4*) signed in 2014 class.

-Using those same statistics comparatively, Tennessee has signed the 4th most combined 4* prospects & 5* prospects in the nation during the last 3 signing classes (2014-2016). A more detailed breakdown looks like:

Total 5* & 4* prospects signed from 2014-2016 (by school):
1) Alabama: 53
2) Florida State: 50
3) Ohio State: 47
4) Tennessee: 46

VolNation once again proves that it's never too early to start worrying about something. With that being said, you can thank Amari Rodgers for this one.

This is why I don't follow recruiting. Especially this early. Kids change their minds like we change underwear! I will say we still have the edge with family being close.

It's college. Colleges are often in small towns where the city is built around the university.

Tuscaloosa is an arm pit, but UA is still a nice campus and hasnt affected thier success. Clemson is in a great area and Greenville is arguably one of the hippest little cities in the south. Plus Dabo has done an incredible job reviving a football power.

Easily impressed if you really believe that. Went to Greenville, South Carolina quite a bit for about 1 year and a half back in 05-06. I thought it sucked. The Coast is awesome in South Carolina, inland not so much..

I watched this kid play against my son in the play offs. Not overly impressed with him. His family was boasting the he was going somewhere to play basketball... So not surprised

Lol. I love how when a kid decommits, this kind of crap always gets said.

You post this just days after Butch broke Freezes heart for the second year in a row.

You bowl me over with intelligence.....

Win some lose some chief. But you are making my point. "Wow, we stuck it to Ole Miss 2 years in a row!!" was not an extra bullet in the bragging belt prior to Freeze now was it?

To the point of this conversation - kids are finding Ole Miss and Clemson attractive right ALONG with the traditional guns we are used to knocking heads with.

It makes the job that much harder and perhaps puts greater light on the impressive job CBJ has done in this new normal.

Hunter doesnt fit clemson either

I agree. The little I've seen from Clemson their system isn't dramatically different from ours. Where they differ is the execution in their passing game. It's still a spread offense. Our play calling, and our passing game is what's going to attract, and keep high level skill position players. If they believe they can't be productive in an offense, then they won't come. With that being said, winning cures everything. Once we get to the point where we're competing for, or in the discussion for, championships on a consistent basis, the recruiting won't be much of an issue.

The kid probably just wants some attention.

I have no idea. But, the concept is certainly true. Look at the difference nationally for say J. Kongbo vs Daniel Bituli. Both super athletes. One of them unknown (outside recruiting gurus) and the other's name was flashed all over the social media & the web for weeks, from coast to coast.

So, if a kid wants to live in the spotlight for a few months and have powerful people clamoring at his kneecaps, then this is an easy way to do it. Just say "I'm deciding on NSD", then go about leading on staff after staff that you have them in your Top X. Then whittle down to 2-3 in the last couple weeks and make each staff think your coming. Nature will take it's course.

While there is a certain benefit of a top state talent leading the recruiting charge for 17'. There is also a certain benefit to a recruit dragging down the recruiting resources of competitors for the course of the cycle. I'm not sure which is more valuable.

One question I have. Is Higgins good enough to play for Barnes vision or not?

Every year since Jones has got here, showing progress was imperative. He has done that very well. Still has to continue to be the elite program we all want it to be. That means a ten win regular season this year and a ATL appearance this year at a minimum. Win that and it's gravy. Do the minimum or better then it will continue to grow and kids will be begging to come to UT. CBJ's plan has been executed well and this season will be another brick in the wall.

Tee Higgins is the real deal & the state of TN is LOADED for 2017. We need to win big on the field in 2016 & we should get a lot of the instate talent. Not sure how you can grow up in Tennessee & not want to play for the Vols. Kids today are not familiar with the definition of "commit" and that's sad, but us fans put them up on a pedistal & they begin to believe their clippings & hype. I think we will do fine getting the guys we want from TN come next Feb.

GO VOLS!!!

What is up with these guys? Any body actually visited Clemson, SC? Watch out for the cow piles!! I can't figure out what the sudden allure is for places like Clemson and Ole Miss.

Clemson and Ole Miss run spread-pass offenses. Ours is focused on the run game. We don't throw nearly as much as those two. Can't blame them.

We have very similar spreads, but Clemson throws a little more than we do. They like to use short screens and bubbles to give the wideouts a chance to make a play on their own

You wouldn't recognize Greenville today. Easily one of the top small cities in the US.
