OE, meet Joe Biden.

Joe Biden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I covered Congress for 3 years, and Biden was one of, if not THE most approachable members of Congress. He's very well spoken (even his opponents agree), and he grew up in a lower middle class family in Scranton, Pa, and is one of the least wealthy members of Congress in either party. His net worth is a whopping $366,000.

If thats true, and he makes over $200K a year. Who on this ticket is the economic guy?

The Associated Press: A look at Biden's net worth

Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., chairman Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama's running mate.

Earned income: $298,200.

Honoraria, all donated to charity: $1,025.

Major assets: Bank accounts, mutual funds and insurance policies, $59,000-$366,000.

Major sources of unearned income: Income from various mutual funds, dividends from Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. policies, $2,501-$5,000.

Major liabilities: Loans against cash value of life insurance policies, $15,001-$50,000; loan co-signer to pay for son's college expenses, $15,001-$50,000; line of credit, J. Wilmington Savings Fund Society, $100,001-$250,000.

Gifts: None.

Narrative: Biden collected $112,500, the second half of his advance, for delivering the manuscript of his book, "Promises to Keep," to publisher Random House in July 2007. He also earned $20,500 in teaching stipends from Widener University. The unsuccessful presidential candidate appeared on "Real Time with Bill Maher" and "The Late Show with David Letterman" last year, collecting $1,025 appearance fees for each that went to charity.

something tells me that, based on the bold part above, Biden's net worth is far greater than 366K. That quote would seem to indicate that his investment holdings are worth from 59K up to 366k.

like Monterey said, if 36 years in the senate leaves you with a net worth of only 366k, economics isn't your strong suit.

What's funny is that if his salary is $298K he will be taxed under Obamas plan. He doesn't look like he can afford it?

If we didn't we wouldn't have a political forum......

For some reason you are taking this to left field.

Clinton was fun loving and Gore was serious.

The same can be said with Bush and Cheney.

I don't know why you are complicating this.

Biden is an awful choice, he brings nothing to help Obama.

Wha? Left field?

So wait - who's the fun-loving one? Neither? They're both, what, arrogant, serious elitists who aren't filthy rich? What if Obama told a fart joke? Or Biden crushed a beer can on his head? Or, better yet, did this?

Would that make them more fun loving? who gives a crap if their candidate is fun loving? Was Reagan?

I have a Sgt. who is Joe Biden......

When I first met him I thought he was an @$$hole but once I got to know him he was actually attempting to be funny and serious.

TennNC can crap all he wants about the love child he had with Biden but Biden comes off in a negative light.

:birgits_giggle:

Why do you continue to make this personal?

We are talking about Joe Public........ Joe Public sees Biden as an old white @$$hole.

Reagan = Fun Loving.......

You really need to stop and check yourself......

oh, so as a Washington insider you can tell me that Biden is universally accepted as an international relations genius? I see.

You say "genius."

I say "trusted source."

Until someone supplants me on this board, on this topic of the reputations of Senators in the area of foreign policy inside the beltway, I seem to have the most relevant experience to make a judgment - that being covering foreign relations legislation for 3 years on Capitol Hill, interviewing senators and their staff and other experts in the subject area.

The indignant responses to this are a bit dramatic. Separate yourselves from your political leanings (and mine) and listen to what I'm saying - Joe Biden is a trusted source on foreign policy. He's chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for many years, with many different colleagues, under different administrations. He's seen and done a lot. In fact, I would say the same thing about a man I disagreed with vehemently - Jesse Helms. The man knew his stuff, even if people disagreed with his strategies.

You all are welcome to debate this subject ad nauseam. I'm finished.

but you try to imply that Americans know that. That's ludicrous. I don't really care if he is the next coming of Marshall, Americans have to know it to vote. Then, they have to believe that a VP working for the second coming of Carter would have any authority to be sensible in the foreign policy arena.

I don't think he's perceived as what you "insiders" want him to be, nor do I think he'll matter in an administration with Obama. I think he'll be relegated to a Gore style role and have to bide (no pun intended) his time by finding a pet lunacy project, a la Gore's global warming.

Edit: Dan Rather and Katie Couric have covered much more than you've even considered, but I wouldn't trust them to be correct on any topic under the sun.

I said that over ten times...... he kindly ignores it because he has a plutonic love for Biden.

MSNBC has gone off the deep end. Matthews and Olberman are going back through Biden's speech restating his points and drawing applause from their live audience as if they were at the podium. It's a complete embarrassment for a "news" organization. I fully expect that after Obama's speech tomorrow night one of them will eventually drop their pants on the set and start humping the desk.
