Obama promising 600,000 goverment jobs by summer.

Then you have the wrong inclination. Why do you think so many Americans retire overseas these days? You think all these senior citizens want sex changes?:eek:lol:

Are you saying senior citizens are retiring overseas in order to receive health care? If that is the case its the first I've heard of it.

It would seem to me those retiring overseas are doing so because they have built enough wealth to travel and see some of the world in their golden years, not because country x has free health care.

HMOs are and have been on the decline for many years - PPOs are much more prevalent.

and another thing, why you gotta be beatin' down the hmos? Saw another thread about their getting uppity about HC rights too. Crap is old. Sexual preference is not a choice.

Allot of Americans are retiring overseas because it's cheaper than America (Food, health care, housing, labor). Where have you been the last 20 years? My health care insurance cost me 15 grand a year in this country. I could do allot with that money overseas.

recent articles suggest it's actually to escape the IRS. And 15k is ridiculous and exactly what we've been discussing in this thread. HC can be found much cheaper unless there are crazy circumstances

So you're saying we have the best health care system in the world? I think we are lacking precisely that.

Big difference between health care and health care system and I do believe we have the best health care in the world, i.e. the people coming from other countries for care.

Many people often have to resort to paying for the drugs/treatments themselves - though most Americans can't afford said treatments - especially the elderly (who are more likely to be ill to begin with).

Depending on how you define "elderly", they are already receiving government health care in the form of Medicare.

I'm sorry - the wealthy from other countries have fantastic care - what about our middle to lower class?

Unless we're talking third world, many places I've been to the cost of living is quite expensive. As another poster said, it's to escape the regulations and taxes. Most of those fleeing are those with wealth. They would like to keep it and use it to live how they like in those dirt cheap countries you mention.

Right now if any country struggling now had any sense, they'd drop their tax rates on expatriates and on foreign purchases of holdings, real estate, etc. I actually mentioned that to some friends connected in Latvian government and they are actually debating that. As their own population flees with what money they have, they need something to be able to bring money back in.

It's not just the wealthy coming here from other countries, you also have middle class that have a problem that can't be fixed in time to keep them alive. I know it's only a small area, but the main treatment I keep hearing about that is not readily available in Canada is kidney dialysis due to the lack of dialysis machines in Canada.

I haven't heard that. I'd be interested in seeing information on this.

I could be wrong, but it is my experience that the media feeds overly negative information about Canadian health care. Much of it is myth.

I have several friends either retired and living elsewhere or researching the possibility. The IRS is way down the list of considerations if it even makes the list.

Safety, cost of property, health care quality, health care cost, property taxes, in-country transportation, and transportation back to the U.S. are the main items considered.

Anyone that even considers moving their wealth to a third world country is an idiot. You may want to move it somewhere other than the U.S. but you certainly want it in a stable economy.

You can always go to Venezuela and live comfortably there. I wouldn't buy too much property or invest in a bank there though....

Don't they hate America? A fellow student had a hard time returning home from Christmas vacation in Caracas.

KK, I did attempt to see if that was true but could not find any reliable information for either case.

Ok. Thanks, all that i've seen/read indicate that most of the negative connotations associated with Canadian health care are myth. There are certainly problems, just not to the extent painted in the media.

I have numerous expat friends that elected to stay in China and Vietnam rather than returning to the states. Several were managers that elected to retire and stay were they were at rather than being transferred back to a job in the states. For me. I would be glad to reitre to either of those countries. I had a great time in both. Actually, if Venezuela would get rid of Chavez, I would consider there also. I lived there for 6 years.

In anyone of those countries a could live like royalty with $50,000/year.:hi: In my 12 years as an expat, I rarely met another expat that wanted to return home. In fact, most said they would go with another company to stay where they were at before they would return....just my experience.

PS. It's not just the money, I actually enjoyed the atmosphere....life is so much simpler there. When I went on vacation back to the states, I could not wait to return to China when I lived there for 4 years. No kidding...Different strokes ffor different folks, but I rarely ever met an American that lived there and did not like it...most dreaded leaving.

Well we just lost another 131K

Companies hire at slow pace for 3rd straight month - Yahoo! Finance

The Labor Department said Friday that companies added a net total of 71,000jobs in July, far below the roughly 200,000 needed each month to reduce the unemployment rate.

Overall, the economy lost a net total of 131,000 jobs last month, but that was mostly because 143,000 temporary census jobs ended.

The jobless rate was unchanged at 9.5 percent.

I've actually thought about living elsewhere as well. My job only has a limit of being connected to the internet. As long as that is up I can work anywhere. As much as I've been involved in Latvia lately I would not mind living there. The winters are another story. But the living is nice and the beaches are wonderful.
