Obama switching positions.

I think he has been in favor of same sex marriage. He just hasn't said so officially.

Even just the idea that the presidential election could turn on this issue is mind boggling.

you can only vote "present" for so long before people begin to think you're an idiot

LG, how will this playout in FL ?

I think he just handed Romney NC and VA.

Translation - Team Obama has decided NC is not in play or is not necessary this go around AND feels this position will help him in some other swing state.

Interesting too that he doesn't see it as a civil rights issue since he supports the decision being made at the state level.

There's got to be an angle. I can't figure out what the hell it is though. Why on earth would a Democrat throw out a wedge issue like this before an election? The time to bank to the left would seem to be post-November.

Think he can run on his record?

My guess is they are looking to hammer Romney on the issue and may be force him to the right more on the issue.

That and I think they probably are giving up on NC and figured they need to strengthen the base rather than shoot for states like NC.

Clearly he waited until after the vote in NC and I'm betting that if it were defeated he may not have had said anything.

The other possibility is that Biden's comments put him on the spot and after the ridiculous tap dance Carney did on Monday they decided we have to at least state a position.

Same here. Team Obama must have internal polling that shows this will help more than it hurts him.
It is very odd timing.

All absurd.

Not a soul who will vote against Obama based on this issue was ever going to vote for him, anyway.

No one who would base their vote on pro-gay rights (or privileges, however you want to look at it) was ever going to vote for Romney.

Of all the issues out there, this has the LEAST effect of any of them.

Any issue that drags Romney from focusing on the economy is a win for the Obama camp. Just look at contraceptives and the Catholic Church. Obama was able to turn the Catholics complaining about having to pay for contraception in their health insurance plan into a Republican war on women.

This issue will help him in fundraising and help with getting the democratic base fired up come November.

Good thing for Obama that he didn't come out for this last week as he then probably would have lost West Virginia to that inmate.

This is going to be one of countless issues brought into the arena by the administration in order to keep the race from being about his record.

I really felt it was that last part there

I give BHO credit for finally telling the truth about his position on this issue, cudos.

What makes the least sense is why Obama would flip flop on the issue as he embarks on a campaign against a guy he's trying to paint as a waffler.

I do not understand why it is that politicians are chastised for changing their opinions, as if consistency is somehow virtuous. I do understand that voters may want some type of certainty that the policies they are voting for via the candidate will be addressed; however, I also see this as one of the reasons why the Framers of the Constitution decided that the only representative body in the Federal Government would be comprised of individuals who were only elected for two years.

I'd say that will happen on the right more so than the left.

To me, this is the Obama camp trying to rekindle the youth vote. Nobody of his stature has ever come out unequivocally in support of gay marriage. And for 18-24 year olds that may not yet experience any real impact from other policies, or view most economic matters as too abstract, gay rights and gay marriage are a huge, huge galvanizing issue.

The country might be evenly split on gay marriage, but youth voters are not, and it is high on the priorities list to boot. If Obama goes out in a debate and promises to ratify a repeal of the defense of marriage act and make it policy to push for marriage equality, that could amount to an important edge.
