Why would you give illegals a DL? Brake the law and lets give you a DL, free health care and more. Good move Obama, I love it.

Well, to reward them with a DL and health care and more that WE are paying for, isn't the answer.

agreed. rewarding people for breaking the law is only going to make the deluge of illegal immigrants greater. there are already 30 guys hanging out on every corner in LA looking for work, their aint' enough work for many more. Trust me.

Would most of the Americans who so vehemently oppose "illegal immigration" be so passionate about the issue of these "illegal immigrants" were WASPs who shared a common language?

I see where you are going but the point isnt "What if they were wasps". Immigration is an issue that needs less of the "what if" and more of "the solution".

well speaking the language IS a serious issue. if most of our immigrants spoke the language i wouldn't have to send my kids (if i had any :)) to a private school because a good % of the public school classes are spoken in spanish and english and therefore it puts my kid at a huge disadvantage compared to all english schools. there is only so much time in a day to teach people english and teach kids math/science/writing/etc. living in a high immigrant area increase my living costs in a lot of ways that people don't realize.

I do feel that the underlying problem with immigration is that most Americans do not want to have to learn a second language in order to communicate with other people who reside in America. I think this is incredibly pathetic. The United States of America is the only first world country in which its middle class and above are vastly monolingual. Sounds like a personal problem to me.

The utility of foreigners and guests is so great that they can be given a place of sixth importance among the royal ornaments...For, as the guests come from various regions and provinces, they bring with them various languages and customs, various knowledges and arms. All these adorn the royal court, heighten its splendour, and terrify the haughtiness of foreign powers. For a country unified in language and customs is fragile and weak.

Can't speak for most Americans, can only speak for myself. My answer is yes. I have no more toleration for english speaking WASPs that break the law than I do for anyone else.

I live in Texas and I am fluent in Spanish. I started taking it in the 7th grade. I also graduated from college with a minor in it. I doubled majored in English and Secondary education. I have deeper issues with immigration other than language barriers.

Ok, then, what is your issue with people who want to come to a country that advertises itself as the beacon of liberty and freedom in order to work and earn money?

Now I understand. We should learn the language of people breaking the law. I think it's incredibly pathetic that we should alter our way of life for people breaking the law. Why should I learn a language of people who technically don't exist in this country?

there is a correct way to go about it. Sneaking across the border and using stolen/forged documents is not it.

Exactly, RealUT does a nice job of framing his question there. It is as if it is impossible or completely unallowable to come here legally.
