Off-season Injuries

Well, lets just say in this particular instance for the LV's. It is done in conjunction with other tests like Vertical Jump, Running Vertical, Standing Broad Jump, Pull-ups, and etc... This "20 suicides in 20 mins" is done one time; and then not again till this time next year.

Why do you keep moving the goal posts on this discussion?

What you describe is very common when teams reassemble in their pre-season training. These kind of fitness tests are the proverbial stick that are used to motivate athletes to stay fit during their Summer or winter breaks. So, when you read about an athlete who is having fitness issues, that generally means they had a poor showing on these pre-season tests and hence, have not done the necessary off season work. Fine.

The broader discussion I was raising was simply how coaches frame their use of conditioning tools (as punishments or as a means to excellence). Your counter arguments seem to be addressing some other issue or concern.

I am pretty sure that HoopDr and I were both speaking on the punishment side of the suicides, not the conditioning or fitness-level-testing aspects of them... Suicides back to back: Using them to gage the conditioning of an athlete is excellent... As a method of developing the muscle for limited-bursts, excellent... As a punishment, I just don't see a benefit. . . Now, for boys or young males, yes, it WILL get their attention... But for girls as a punishment, they're not early as effective for me as "showing my disappointment to them".

I hope Te'a will be ready by October. We will need her bad this season. I think Carter's career is over.

That's the same thing I said/thought when I read the article. It sounds like Carter will call it a career (she will probably still be on the bench but more as an assistant than a coach) and from the sound of it Cooper may be out for a while (I hope she's ready to go but it doesn't sound as promising) and if that is the case MeMe, Reynolds, and Middleton will truly have to step it up.

Really a concern that were possibly going to be down to nine players starting the season and possibly for the season. I guess Reynolds and Middleton would be the point guards with Deshields and Jackson the other perimeter players. Looks like everybody will play so Dunbar will get a lot more minutes than last season. Really tough to go into a season with less than 12 JMO as a couple more injuries and your looking at less than a rotation. Even if were at ten going in a couple of injuries would be quite a disaster.

With MeMe's athleticism, she should be killing the mid-range game. And she should be attacking off the dribble. I don't understand why some of these guards play so timid and afraid. Cooper might of shot the ball poorly some games, but she looked to attack and was aggressive. Our guard play must be much better this upcoming season.

I agree. Hopefully, Holly will adjust to hide defensive weaknesses of certain players. I wish we could switch to some sort of defensive system Syracuse runs. They wreaked havoc and lead the nation in mostly all defensive stats and Dunbar could be on the floor more.

It's crazy how the injury bug is always around this team, it's been going on for years it seems like. I was expecting Cooper to be a major factor this year. Year after year, it's always something. :( I'd swear someone put some voodoo on this team.

Aggressive guard play is in most cases dictated by the coaching staff and what they have the ability to recruit. Women's D1 basketball is no longer a game for timidity. In the words of one of the greatest coaches, I have ever known, our guards need to toughen up "Buttercup". In fact and truth, the whole team and coaching staff should take that advise, after all it resulted into 8 National Championships.:good!:

injuries have killed the Lady Vols since CHW has taken over,it has been every year

i do wonder what is going on

Tennessee had the injury bug for a long time throughout the Summitt era too. Off the top of my head I can think of:

2011-Kelley Cain/Angie Bjorklund/Lyssi Brewer

2010-Vicki Baugh

2009-Vicki Baugh/Kelley Cain/Angie Bjorklund/Cait McMahan

2008-Kelley Cain/Cait McMahan/Candace Parker (NCAAs)

2007-Healthy (National Title)

2006-Alexis Hornbuckle

2005-SWG, Candace Parker, Loree Moore, Sid Spencer, Alex Fuller

2004-Loree Moore

2003-I think UT was healthy for most of the year

2002-Ashley Robinson

2001-Tamika Catchings

I know some may think I'm crazy, but I keep thinking Middleton has a lot to offer. I just learned the other day that she is one of only 12 LV's EVER to get a double/double with points and assists.

I agree if she can get a more aggressive mind set on the court. She plays a little to relaxed needs to up the intensity and not be hesitant to take a shot.

Happy birthday Kamera Harris. I think she is going to be a good player for us.

I think we will see a different Middleton this year too. She knows she has a lot more depending on her this year, The door is open for her to excel at both point and SG, It will be in her best interest to work on the mentality of a shooter and the game of a PG.

I sure would like to know the extent of the "grapevine" injuries. Cooper, Jackson, any others. I know it is often a ploy by a coach (guilty) to overplay a minor twist of an ankle, during an off-season, to take attention off of that player. I don't know if this is in HW's playbook, but I do know it is quite effective to overplay a conceived injury.
