We're only top 10 in yards per game and TDs for the seasy

I'm so sick of this narrative. I think everyone locally and nationally expects the 2022 offense. Therefore, they assume we are 'bad' this year on offense. It's not statistically true at all. We're top 10. Ohio State is #38 in total offense for those wondering, and they beat down plenty of cupcakes too.

Take away the cupcakes and only look at league play. Where do we rank then?

Nice countermeasure. I thought we were talking about offensive stats, not win loss record. Stay on topic.

And you are cherry picking. If you do the same thing to any team in the country, their numbers will fall off, too.

If you look at the scores in most SEC games this season, you’ll see a lot of teams scoring in the teens and low-20s. They play defense in this league.

No SEC team averaged 30 points or more per game in conference games. Vols were #9 at 25 per game, but not far off #1 aTm at 29.2.

Yes, there is room to improve, but it is unreasonable to expect anything drastic.

If I remember correctly we were top 2 or 3 in offense after the first 3 or 4 games. And apparently have been dropping since then.
There are many variables involved but the only things that matter is the W/L record and who we beat and loss to.

I simply asked a question.

I've noticed far less usage of our lightning fast up-tempo style of offense since we started closing the talent gap Heupel initially faced coming in. Especially in the early days with Golesh, it gave us a wrinkle that was hard to deal with defensively and helped win us some games that we didn't necessarily have the talent to win otherwise. The inherent downside to up-tempo is the possibility of a high number of quick 3 and outs. Our defense can barely catch their breath and they're right back out there. They give up chunks of yardage and big plays, and it's quickly a high scoring game.

While we still do up-tempo occasionally depending on the situation, we're seeing a more game control, clock management focused pace with our offense simply because we can do that now. To me, this has been the unrecognized contributing factor to our much improved defensive play. The end result is we don't get into as many wide-open shootouts, our offensive numbers are down, and our defensive stats are up. We are simply more balanced than before. We are NOT necessarily just regressing on offense. We're now holding many very good offensive opponents down simply by denying them a huge ToP advantage that they may have enjoyed against us in the past.

So we dropped from top 2-3 to.... 8th overall?

Seems like we were still pretty damn good.

Tennessee, since that is who we are talking about here.

In a competitive sport, it’s illogical to look at any team in a vacuum. The question that matters isn’t “how was our offense in conference play”. The question that matters is “how was our offense in conference play, relative to the rest of the rest of the conference”

The offense struggled to score at times, particularly in the 1st half of several games. We were able to move the ball with relative ease in every game, but our red zone offense struggled a good bit and we had way more issues with turnovers than in years past.

Needless to say, we wouldn't be in the playoffs right now with a mediocre offense.

I don’t like trolling or flooding each thread with similar answers, but no one can expect 2022 offense every year because we aren’t going to see a player who is so perfect for the offense like Hendon Hooker was. His numbers were insane.

You can when you have a great defense, which we do.

No you can't. Certainly not in the SEC. Teams with mediocre offenses don't win 10 games in this conference. You can be the best defense in the nation, but you aren't winning 10 games in the SEC these days with a mediocre offense.
