Offensive Coordinator candidates

More like letting someone on staff “interview” in the bowl game.
Alex Golesh was an outside hire for Heupel in 2019 at UCF. Heupel has shown he promotes from within when GAs are ready to be position coaches, but I don't think that means he will necessarily promote a OC from within. None of our current coaches seem like they are locks to be ready to move into that position .... YET

If Heupel is looking to hire someone he's familiar with Anthony Tucker is a potential name. He was with Heupel at UCF as a running back coach and a co OC with Golesh. He's been the OC at Utah St the last two years.

And I'm not sold on the idea that it's Halzle. Could Heupel go after Garrett Riley or Jeff Lebby?

Riley II is a rising star. I think he wants a head coach job soon but breaking into the SEC as an OC would be a step up for him on that path. My theory is that Heupel can't announce him because TCU is in the CFP. After Michigan..... and Max Duggan looks like Larry Bird did in the Indiana State years but Larry met a team from Michigan too... after Michigan, maybe we hear Garrett Riley is our new OC.

Second on my list is Jeff Lebby and OU is going to some Cheesy Bowl too, so I suspect that might delay that announcement.

I'm just not convinced, because of the delay, that we're promoting from within.
I am kinda surprised that Lebby didn't become a head coach first before Golesh that said at Oklahoma he is the offense and he gets 5.7 million for 3 years. I think if he was with Heupel again he would be a HC faster Lebby worked for Heupel at Oklahoma then he was at Baylor and learned that offense then he worked for Heupel at UCF where they combined the Air raid and the offense Briles ran.

Idk if Halzle gets promoted or not, I think he's the obvious pick from within.

However the narrative of give him another year or two to work under til hes ready doesn't hold water to me... As Joey Halzle has been with Heup going back to Utah State so he has plenty of time / experience working in this system. So in theory he's the guy from within.

However the delay leads me to think it's not promoting from within. Unless the hireis just TE coach but I find it hard to believe that a TEcoach would wait til after bowls

Maybe Lebby doesn’t want to be a head coach like coach G. Not every coordinator wants to become a head coach. Or maybe he wants to wait longer. Look at Brent Venables. He could have been a head coach years ago.

I do find it strange to delay announcement if you're just gonna promote from within.

But with the beat reporters and fan discussion, I will continue to expect Joey Halzle to be promoted and hire TE Coach who can recruit.

I believe that's the outcome until announced otherwise

Rumor is we are waiting until after recruiting is done before the announcement is made. Wouldn’t that indicate an outside candidate has been targeted?

That's my thought too and Heupel is seen as "in control" of our offense so our recruiting isn't a problem, I guess.

I'm still hoping that Lebby rejoins Heupel. I don't think Heupel "needs help" but I think Golesh provided insight, let Heupel bounce ideas off someone, etc. I think Lebby might be even better as a sounding board because he has history with Heupel that Golesh didn't.

Maybe Heupel could hire Jason Witten to coach tightends.

I haven't read this whole thread so maybe someone has given reasons for this... but why do you want him?

OU has a talent advantage over every team in the Big 12. He had plenty of weapons. They scored under 33 ppg and were 7th in the Big 12. There may be guys Heupel would want other than Hazle... I'm just not sure why Lebby would be on that list at this point.

Yeah the dude coached multiple top 20 defenses and was a perennial top 10 recruiter. That would be terrible.
I guess we are talking about different people. My apology. What happened at GT? And this thread is about offensive coordinator candidates.
