Offensive Coordinator candidates

I haven't read this whole thread so maybe someone has given reasons for this... but why do you want him?

OU has a talent advantage over every team in the Big 12. He had plenty of weapons. They scored under 33 ppg and were 7th in the Big 12. There may be guys Heupel would want other than Hazle... I'm just not sure why Lebby would be on that list at this point.
Mainly because of his history with Heupel. There's an interview with Golesh (I'm not at spot where I can look it up) where he talks about game preparation and how they did things.

It was insightful that they brainstormed things they'd seen in film, possible opportunities the opposing defense might give, matchups, etc. I don't think Heupel needs a "strong" OC in the sense of someone who is going to want, honestly, much control but I think he needs someone he can trust to be a sounding board, look for the kinds of situation our offense exploits, etc.

Lebby has done that. Now I do find it interesting that Heupel brought several UCF folks to UT and he didn't bring Lebby, so there may be a reason he didn't that I'm unaware of.

Because Lebby had left UCF a year earlier than Heupel. Joined Kiffin at Ole Miss. Golesh replaced him.

THe OC also needs to be able to fold that at warp speed into real game time. THey have several during the game that are analyzing every little thing at an extremely fast pace and have plays already called 2-4 out for multiple resulting scenarios. And all that runs thru the Hype who runs with the final call, all in the span of just a few secs. Totally warp speed in the coaches box on game day. Gotta have an OC that understands what is going on and can roll right into it. All just to maintain the speed of his offense. Big name is not as important to the hire as other things will be.

A little disappointing we are not hearing more news/updates on the OC Search or TE Coach if Halzle is promoted to OC.

I know it’s only been a little over a week. But little to no news or updates. There was only like 2 articles on candidates.

Same with portal news. Just way too quiet. All these beat reporters and VIP sites yet no news. And no updates on here either, just very frustrating

And yet, very encouraging that no one steps outside of Heupel to leak info.

My question there is that Lebby would seem to be past the stage where he wants to be an understudy. To me it seems he would want to be in charge of the O and building his own resume.

In my mind, the only good reason he would come to UT is if he wants to homestead as an OC.

Valid point. Most P5 moves are basically lateral for coordinators in the top half of those conferences. Boils down to what's open at the time and if you have a chance to go work for someone you like better and work better with than where you are. If Hype favors him enough at this point in time to offer, then Lebby has to decide if he desires to be a HC, then is UT a faster path than OU. If CBV don't figure that out quick at OU, then that answer could be a yes. And he also has to decide if the OU roster maximizes this type of offense and should he move on. Fit is everything whether player or coach.

Perhaps, but he's worked with Heupel and Kiffin and in his first stint under a more defensive minded head coach, Venables, at OU.

OU didn't exactly light it up this year and I'd assume Lebby had more input there than with Heupel or Kiffin. Maybe he needs a little more "seasoning" before he's HC material? Maybe he's more comfortable (and better off) as the OC who advises "the man" instead of being "the man."

Who've you got in mind?

They lost 16 guys including 7 on offense last yea. Of those 7, it was your top 2 QB’s (2022 Heisman winner) and 1100 yards and 13 TD’s worth of WR/TE who all started at other P5 teams this year. He wasn’t playing with a full deck.

Heupel and UT were? UT's roster this year was still assembled from the Island of Misfit Toys. An even better comparison was the 2021 O- #2 O following the Pruitt exodus.

And we finished 7-6 and they can do the same. We all know how key a QB is and Hooker is better than Dillion Gabriel. If they had kept Caleb Williams or even Rattler, I’d bet money they’re much better than 6-6. However, their PPG is heavily swayed by scoring 0 against TX, a game that Gabriel didn’t play in. They started a kid who had thrown 30 career passes.

As another post said, not all, probably a majority, of coordinators don’t necessarily want to be head coaches! Coordinators spend more time coaching than all the other stuff HC’s must do.
On who we hire for OC, I think I heard Rick Neuheisel say the coaching fraternity is only two degrees of separation. So if anyone wants to run the tree in a spreadsheet, finding OC candidates should be fairly easy.

I'll trust Heupel... but I'm not going to be disappointed at all if it isn't Lebby.

Jumping to UT after ONE SEASON of running his own show at his alma matter? You’ve admitted failure.

I think it’s Going to be someone that knows his system., just don’t know who all he’s work with before. Throw some names out there that has please

Here is an interesting article that thinks Joe Jon Finley at Oklahoma would be a candidate for Co-OC and TE coach. Heupel would call the plays. Halzle also as Co-OC and QB coach.
Heupel and Finley played together at OU and was brought on the Missouri staff by Heupel when he was the OC as TE coach. Finley is currently the TE coach at Oklahoma under OC Jeff Lebby.

College football insider says Vols could look to Josh Heupel's past at offensive coordinator

I guess we are talking about different people. My apology. What happened at GT? And this thread is about offensive coordinator candidates.

He got fired as the HC at a school that’s near impossible to recruit to. Someone else made a comment about this being a good place for someone to rehabilitate themselves. I mentioned that Collins would be someone like that too. If you feel that my 3 word post hijacked the thread I can grab you a tissue.
