Offensive Scheme

To date, we are running the ball for 5.5 yards a carry and 215 a game.

I don't remember the last time we were that successful in the run game. Clearly, the scheme is not hurting us there.

The short passes are to give Worley confidence.

We are averaging 5.5 and 215 a game but 3 of the 5 games we've played are against clearly inferior teams. I think this run of SEC games will show us what the averages really are. I think our run game still needs lots of work and I feel all those soft draws and read option plays without the benefit of a running QB are about to be fully exposed.

Butch is saying all of the right things and taking a great approach to turning the program around. However, color me a skeptic on his offensive scheme.

Butch's offensive scheme is not going to attract the best offensive linemen (he has a specific body typo and athleticism in mind for his scheme), we don't know if it will attract the type of QBs(pro-style passing) and WRs (tall athletic) that the program has had the past 30 years.

It seemed to work out pretty well for Oregon.

Our incoming group of OL commits is a very talented bunch. We'll be alright.

Right now, opposing Ds know that Worley can't consistently throw downfield, so they can stack the box to stop the run. To counter that, we throw WR screens to try to get a playmaker the ball on the edge and pick up a few yards. If we do that, we can keep the D honest and make them defend the perimeter...then we run inside again. The chess match continues.

The "scheme" is there, we just need to work on execution.

There are different types of zone blocking schemes, which has some variant that is used by all college and NFL teams.

I understand what you are saying in your posts ...and agree . I love a good pro style offense . They are smart , efficient , and can spread the field just as good . They can also bring the power game when they need to.

The problem for us ...we just dont have the man power for it . The passing game is more timing based ..you have to have a tight end ... you have to have at least one down field threat at receiver ( thats how you stretch the field) . You need a dominant heavy back ....and a stable of talented RBs. Less receivers on the field mean more free bodies to attack the running gaps.

Bama can run it because they have had flawless recruiting for 5-6 years now. What they do is smart ...they take all the reps off their D by leaning on you will a bunch of RBs and big Oline ( which also has alot of depth ) Less injuries on D cause there are less reps and less impacts.

They are the haves now ...and we are the have nots. When we get a few more years of good recruiting in us ..maybe we look that direction. Until then I think a spread based system can help us ..if we can get a QB and receivers to play ball

Nothing wrong with your points but it seems I am constantly posting this in reply.

The offense is basic until they can get the simple stuff right. Worley needs completions period. Anything short and easy helps him and the WRs get confidence and (hopefully) manageable 2nd and 3rd downs.

Hurry up is to keep the defense from changing out players and keeps them on their toes. Once this offense gets things rolling they will be your normal preferred hurry up offense.

I just feel that screens are needed but not as much as we run them. I understand we need to build confidence but if the screen is being stopped, we need to look for simple over the middle routes.

I didn't know we'd forfeited the rest of our schedule. See y'all next season.

We had a very good offense last year by any standard, no?

Yet, our defense was worse than our offense was good. I don't think you can blame the offensive scheme for all those losses, since no scheme could have saved those games.

We had the second best offense in UT history with the by far worst defense and the by far worst in-game coach.

It was actually the inverse of the 2008 season when our defense was amazing and we could only put up 7 points on Wyoming.

2008's defense + 2012's offense and we're cooking with gas, natural gas.

I have no doubt that we would have more hardware in the ole trophy case if we'd of had that 08 defense last year.

I honestly think the teams we face in November--Mizzou, Auburn, Vandy, Kentucky--all have comparable run defenses to South Alabama and Western Kentucky. Well, with the exception of Kentucky. Kentucky is much worse. Still, we are fully capable of breaking 200+ rushing games on all those teams and 300+ on the Wildcats.

As long as we don't implode in the rushing phase over the next three games, we should finish 2013 with very, very strong rushing stats.

Butch made a comment this week which made me think of this thread. He said simply, "Youth limits scheme."
