Official 2014 FIFA World Cup Thread

Disappointed to see Argentina so negative. They have three center backs and two wingbacks who are pretty limited offensively. Messi has no targets up top. Both Messi and Di Maria both like to fade back into the midfield to get the ball which leaves Aguero all by himself. It's just awful all around.

Messi is surrounded by three defenders at all times because there are no other attackers to worry about in the attacking third. **** Sabella. This is worse than the lineup that Maradona was putting out.

Truth be told, if we finished 2nd in the group and ended up on the same side of the bracket with Argentina it wouldn't be the end of the world. They really don't scare me. I'd be more worried with Belgium the round before.

I don't know. Argentina are pretty loaded. I could see them shredding the US back four as long as they didn't park the bus like they have in this game.

What instinct. Hops over that tackle attempt after a quick flick, doesn't break stride and knocks it in without ever looking up to see the defense or goal.

Hi VolNation! :salute:

I'm actually here for Tennessee Football, but since there's not much going on ... and there's a World Cup around the corner: I'll introduce myself here, in the rather shadowy parts of VN. :alien:

The World Cup has been great so far (at least compared to the South Africa one...). I am German, eager to see how far the guys will go, but I'm having my fingers crossed for the US Team. Klinsi is from my native area here in Germany, and - well we know that he is not the most sophisticated football manager - he has some intrinsic energy that can help get a national football programm started. Over here, that was exactly the case. The one thing he knows well: How to get people (not only the public, but the stakeholders as well) exited about it. It's not all the way. But it's a good start. Fingers crossed for the USMNT. :hi:

I think Argentina has some serious issues moving forward against quality teams. They will likely destroy Iran and Nigeria but will run into some problems in the quarterfinals.

They really can't find the balance between attack and defense. They were extremely negative in the first half. Made some changes at half to remedy that, which helped the attack, but I think it left the defense a little exposed at times. No one in that front four (Di Maria, Messi, Higuain, Augeuro) has ever been asked to defend on their club teams. Higuain and Aguero are straight up strikers and Messi isn't going to be asked to track back in defense. That leaves Di Maria to track the opposing teams midfielders and fullbacks. Their defense is simply not talented or organized enough to handle such little support from their attackers.

:hi: Well, those American good friends of mine, who introduced me to the game of (American) football are TN alumni. From the late 90's, so including Peyton and the NC. :cray: That's when I started following that - pretty weird, at that time - new sport. Have been to NFL and College Ball games in the US since, but... that is how I got there and an allegiance is an allegiance. :rtfm:

You might be wrong here.

Seems like they will concede a lot of goals. Can't have 4 guys not contributing defensively at all.

So far France and Holland are the two big surprises in my book. If Holland can keep the momentum from the thrashing they gave Spain people better look out. I feel bad for poor little Australia/Chile when they have to play Holland.

I am looking forward to seeing how Germany does today as well as America (of course). If the US has a tough time today it's going to be a short World Cup.
