Official 2014 FIFA World Cup Thread

This is the problem with soccer. Seems like soccer players can never move on. They always have to whine and complain in the game and after it. If the other team does anything at all, they act so offended, then the next minute they will up the ante and take it to the next level. Greece got some calls and Costa Rica reacted by players falling all over the pitch.

I don't watch enough soccer other than the EPL, so is this just players desperate given the stakes? I know soccer is always annoying with flops and whining, but this has been ridiculous. Even Robben (who is a flopper) dove once or twice before he earned the legit foul.

On another note: Mexico's manager was childish. I understand his points about the referee's country being against Mexico, but at the end of the day his team choked and lost. Absolutely no class from him ranting on the refs like that. At least Mexico is a consistent team in the WC. Not many teams have the skill to lose 6 times in a row in the round of 16.

Cause basketball doesn't have the same egregious flops. See the Miami heats 2013 roster and you have a handful of them. They flop and complain just as much.

Tom Brady. Enough said.

Baseball has guys act like they got hit by a pitch and complain about calls.

It's every major sport. Not just soccer. Soccer get an unfair reputation. The flopping culture is more prevalent with Latin countries and Italy though.

Ah tennessee bias. If you want to name the #1 flopper in the NFL, it's a guy that used to put on the orange and white. Now he wears orange and navy.

The difference in soccer flopping vs other sports is how significant the penalty is, especially in front of goal.

I would argue that NBA basketball is as egregious as soccer when it comes to flopping. Much more is being said about the flopping in soccer this summer because it's the World Cup.

It's just like hoops. You have to sell the foul or you're not going to get the call. Does anybody actually think Steve Nash is going to collide with Blake Griffin and knock Griffin over? Griffin has to go down or he's not drawing the charge. That's the way the sport is officiated. It's the same with soccer.

Because 99% of Americans don't pay any attention to soccer played by people older than 8 unless it's the WC or Olympics and the sport will never grow here unless FIFA can convince the American entertainment consumer that their's is not a corrupted sport by instituting some major changes starting with instant replay. The truth is that FIFA thrives on controversy because it keeps the matches in the news for much longer than they would be otherwise but it's anathema to the American ideal of fair play and equal opportunity. We don't kiss the ring in this country.

Not saying other sports don't have floppers, but soccer players do it like their lives depend on it. The effect that one flop has on a game is huge, more so than in other sports. And yes, that was something I was wondering about, whether or not it was a trend with certain cultures or not.

Thanks.

I would imagine we're seeing the worst of it because it's the WC and players/teams are desperate to win lol.

i.e. Suarez's handball saving Uruguay from certain defeat in 2010. Some said it was a cheap play, but it ended up winning the game for them.

Matiudi should have been sent off.

Very even game so far. I wasn't convinced about this French team. Their group play was a little bit of an aberration.

No they don't. It's no different than basketball. I watch both. A lot.
