TENNESSEE VS. #14 AUBURN

View attachment 99983

The unbeaten Tennessee soccer team hosts No. 14 Auburn this Sunday afternoon for its SEC home opener at Regal Soccer Stadium.

The game will be featured on SEC Network at 3 p.m. with Sam Gore as the play-by-play announcer and Tony DiCicco providing analysis. Live stats and a live blog will also be available through UTSports.com.

The Volunteers (5-0-3) are coming off an 8-0 drubbing of Belmont last Sunday in a game that featured six second-half goals. Seven different players scored in the game, led by freshman F/MF Danielle Marcano, who tallied her first two career goals. Freshman Tatum Wagner also scored her first-career goal while Susan Ferguson registered her first goal of the year.

After scoring only three goals in its first four games, Tennessee has caught fire offensively, tallying 15 in the past four contests.

The Vols also rank amongst the best in the nation defensively, already posting seven shutouts, which is tied for first in the country. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Julie Eckel was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week on Tuesday and earned her second SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor on Monday. Eckel ranks third in the nation with a 0.12 goals against average and has helped Tennessee hold its opponents scoreless for the past 384 minutes of play.

Tennessee will look to improve to 2-0 in conference play after defeating Arkansas, 1-0, in its SEC opener last Friday in Fayetteville. Auburn (7-1-0) comes into the match ranked 14th in the NSCAA Coaches' Poll and fresh off a 2-1 victory over South Alabama last Sunday.

Junior F Casie Ramsier leads the Tigers with four goals and nine points so far this season while redshirt freshman Sarah Le Beau has been solid in goal, posting five shutouts and a 0.38 GAA.

The Vols are 11-5-2 all-time against the Tigers following consecutive ties in the previous two meetings. Tennessee picked up the last win in the series, downing Auburn on the road, 1-0, back in 2012.

Tennessee hits the road next weekend to continue SEC play. The Vols take on Mississippi State Friday at 8 p.m. ET on SEC Network +/WatchESPN before traveling to Nashville for a showdown against Vanderbilt that will be aired on the SEC Network at 5 p.m. ET.

We're down 1-2 to auburn at halftime. Our starting midfield was abused in the first half; just not good enough. .We have youth and talent issues in that unit, and until it gets better we will struggle, big-time, against decent teams. I have no idea why Pensky plays Cousins so much and Marcano so little...The color commentator, an experienced former coach, noted that UT played better after Cousins was subbed out. Curious. The right side of our defense had a bad half too. Let's hope we can tie it and then win it.

VOLS FALL TO #14 AUBURN, 3-1, IN SEC HOME OPENER
Tennessee soccer dropped its first game of the year on Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 14 Auburn, 3-1, in front of a large crowd of 1,944 at Regal Soccer Stadium. The Volunteers (5-1-3, 1-1 SEC) had their scoreless streak snapped in the 21st minute when Sophie Simantel headed home her first goal of the season off a corner kick to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal that Tennessee had surrendered since a 1-1 tie against No. 7 Virginia Tech on Aug. 30, a streak spanning 404 minutes of play.

Despite trailing for the first time this season, the Vols answered back with a goal of their own in the 32nd minute. Redshirt sophomore Ariel Kupritz took a pass from Mackenzie Gouner around midfield and made a spectacular individual run down the left side all the way to goal before sliding her shot past Auburn goalkeeper Sarah Le Beau into the lower right corner.

“It’s a huge boost of confidence for me, just to know that I can help and I can be impactful off the bench,” Kupritz said.

“Ariel made an unbelievable individual play to get us back to 1-1 and we were praying that we could get into the locker room at 1-1,” head coach Brian Pensky said.

Unfortunately, Tennessee was unable to get to the break tied as Charlotte Van Ishoven netted her second goal of the year in the 36th minute to give Auburn (8-1-0, 1-1 SEC) a 2-1 advantage heading into the half.

The Big Orange came out strong in the second half, generating a handful of quality scoring chances, but were unable to find the equalizer.

In the 62nd minute, the Tigers added to their lead thanks to a great shot by Kristen Dodson from the center of the box, beating Vols’ goalkeeper Julie Eckel with a strike just under the crossbar to make it 3-1.

Eckel, the reigning SEC defensive player of the week, made four saves on the afternoon while the Vols posted 13 shots of their own but only four on frame.

Auburn’s three goals were by far the most by any opponent this season, as Tennessee had only allowed a single goal entering Sunday’s match.

“I don’t think we were ourselves today,” Pensky said. “I don’t think our possession was very good, don’t think our edge was very good, don’t think our togetherness was very good. We didn’t come ready to play, simple as that.”

The Volunteers hit the road for their next two games as they continue SEC play at Mississippi State on Friday and at Vanderbilt on Sunday.

TENNESSEE at MISSISSIPPI STATE
Tennessee travels to Mississippi State to continue SEC play.

Tennessee hits the road to take on Mississippi State this Friday at 8 p.m. ET to begin a two-game road trip.
The Volunteers (5-1-3, 1-1 SEC) will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season following a 3-1 loss to No. 14 Auburn last Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs (3-5-1, 1-1 SEC) are coming off of their first conference win since 2012 after beating Arkansas last Sunday, 2-1. Tennessee leads the all-time series, 14-2, and has defeated Mississippi State seven consecutive times, including a 4-0 win in Knoxville last season, while outscoring the Bulldogs 22-1 during that span.

Redshirt sophomore forward Ariel Kupritz scored the lone goal for the Big Orange in its loss to Auburn and has the only two goals for the Vols during conference play this season, after also scoring in a 1-0 win at Arkansas on Sept. 11.

Mississippi State is led by freshman midfielder Kiley Martens, who leads the Bulldogs with four goals and eight points so far this season.

Tennessee will attempt to get back to playing shutdown defense after surrendering a season-high three goals in its last outing. The Vols currently lead the SEC in goals against average (0.41) and are also tied for first in goals allowed (four) and shutouts (seven). Redshirt senior goalkeeper Julie Eckel has been a big reason for Tennessee's defensive success, as she leads the conference with a 0.42 GAA and a .897 save percentage while also ranking tied for first with six shutouts.

Friday's game will be streamed live on SEC Network +/WatchESPN. The Volunteers continue their weekend road trip with a Sunday evening showdown against in-state foe Vanderbilt at 5 p.m. ET on SEC Network/WatchESPN.

Such a disappointing performance against auburn. You have to get results in your home games. The Vols have 9 SEC games left. I think we will need to win at least five to get into the NCAA tournament--and then maybe get a tie or two in addition to that. It will hard given the youth of this team and our problems in midfield. The next game, against Miss. State, is an absolute must-win game. They are not very good but just won their first SEC game in a long time and so will have some confidence. After that, we play at pretty good Vandy team at their place. That will be a tough one for this group. Vandy looked solid against texas a&M and they have a couple of dangerous players up front who could beat our back line unless they are at their best.

Teams we can and must beat looking ahead--georgia, bama, ole miss and miss. state.
Teams that could very well beat us--south carolina (away), florida (home), vandy (away), missouri (away)
Tossup game: kentucky

I hate to be a pessimist, and soccer games are often close even when one time is superior in run of play, but it's going to be hard for UT this year. Next year looks brighter--if Pensky can find a couple of physical, dynamic players for the middle of the field to complement our forwards and find somebody strong to replace Santorio at centerback after she graduates.

How much of a difference do you think Hannah Wilkinson would have made?

Vols and Miss. State play to 0-0 draw. Disappointing that we couldn't win this game, as Miss. State is not very good, but then neither are the Vols, frankly--and we could have lost this game. As coach Pensky said after the game, UT played hard, battled--and credit for that. We played a terrible first half--so much so that I didn't watch much of the second, in which our play improved and we looked to be the better team, though still struggled to create scoring chances. The Vols are just too young in spots, not terribly good at certain positions, not polished enough in possession overall to be a good team. (I can say that having watched two very good teams--virginia and notre dame--play the other night. A very nimble and self-assured notre dame team beat no. 1 ranked va., which hadn't lost at home in 38 games.) We give the ball away too easily; somebody will make a good play to get the ball, we'll make one or two passes and then either a bad decision or a bad pass follows. We have a veteran player who consistently makes bad passes. It's hard to be good if you can't string together 4-7 good passes with some regularity; that's what good teams do. We have a tendency to kick the ball away to relieve pressure rather than work to keep possession, which requires more skill and cohesion, and we struggle to get the ball to A. Bialzcak, our center forward. She is a good player but very rarely gets decent service.

I continue to wonder why Marcano doesn't play more. She is really the only attacking midfield threat we have, and yet doesn't play very much. She came into the game late in the first half and within three minutes nearly scored a goal. And then she was taken out--? We had a paltry 3 shots on goal for the game--not good enough--but don't play our best attacking midfielder? Maybe she is not as defensively responsible as the coaches want--shades of Holly Warlick! Who knows, but we didn't score a goal.

Amy Neal got hurt in the game--hope she OK. Miss. State has a centerback who looks like a tight end on the football team and plays like that too. She stepped on Neal early in the game and the Vol didn't return. We need Neal back.

Vandy is up next. Unlike this game, a tie against Vandy would probably be a good result, as the 'dores are pretty solid team with a couple of dangerous players up front. They beat us last year and, sadly, I can see that happening again unless we play a strong game. Here's to doing just that.

VOLS EARN EIGHTH SHUTOUT IN TIE AT MISSISSIPPI STATE
Tennessee opened its two-game road trip on Friday night with a 0-0 draw against Mississippi State in Starkville.

Tennessee recorded its conference-leading eighth shutout of the season in a 0-0 draw at Mississippi State on Friday night.

The Vols (5-1-4, 1-1-1 SEC) had a tough time generating offense in the first half against a scrappy Mississippi State (3-5-2, 1-1-1 SEC) side. Tennessee's only shot of the first half came in the 36th minute on a hard drive by Danielle Marcano from the top of the box that was saved by Bulldogs' goalkeeper Tanya de Souza.

Redshirt senior keeper Julie Eckel was a bright spot for the Volunteers in the first 45 minutes, making four saves and punching multiple balls away off corner kicks to keep the game scoreless entering halftime.

The Big Orange came out with more energy after the break and went on to outshoot the Bulldogs, 7-3, in the second half but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Vols best chance came in the 56th minute when Gabby Santorio rattled the crossbar from about 15 yards out. Ariel Kupritz, who led the Vols with three shots on the night, also had a good chance as time expired but her shot was saved by de Souza.

Tennessee controlled play in overtime, posting six shots in the extra two periods to just three by the Bulldogs. However, the Vols had to survive a late scare as Carlyn Baldwin cleared the ball off the goal line with just seconds remaining after a scramble ensued in the box off a corner kick.

Despite being outshot 7-1 in the first half, Tennessee ended up with a 14-13 shot advantage at the end of the game. Eckel was superb on the night, making seven saves en route to earning her conference-leading seventh shutout this season.

The Vols have a quick turnaround as they travel to Nashville to square off against in-state conference rival Vanderbilt on Sunday at 5 p.m. ET. Fans can catch the game live on the SEC Network/WatchESPN.

TENNESSEE AT VANDERBILT

Following a scoreless draw at Mississippi State on Friday, the Volunteers cap off their two-game road trip on Sunday with a trip to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt at 5 p.m. ET. on the SEC Network.

Tennessee (5-1-4, 1-1-1 SEC) remained unbeaten on the road after its tie in Starkville, making its record 1-0-3 away from Knoxville this season. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Julie Eckel made seven saves against the Bulldogs and earned her conference-leading seventh shutout of the season.

The Vols are 9-10-2 all-time against their in-state rivals and will look to avenge a 2-0 loss to Vanderbilt (5-5-1, 1-2 SEC) last year. Despite last season's loss, the Big Orange has had success recently against the Commodores, posting a 3-1-1 record in the past five meetings.

The `Dores are coming off a 3-2 loss at home to No. 9 Florida on Friday night and will attempt to get back to .500 in SEC play with a win. They are led by the duo of Simone Charley and Lydia Simmons, who both have nine points this season.

Friday's game will air live on SEC Network/WatchESPN at 5 p.m. ET, marking the second straight week the Vols will be on live television. Tennessee is back home for its next game, as Georgia comes to town on Friday, Oct. 2.

TENNESSEE VS. GEORGIA
The Vols host SEC foe Georgia on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.

View attachment 100748

Tennessee is back at home this Friday night to take on Georgia at 7 p.m. ET after picking up a pair of ties on the road last week.

Despite not earning a win last week, the Volunteers (5-1-5, 1-1-2 SEC) picked up two points in tough road contests at Mississippi State and Vanderbilt to remain unbeaten away from home this season. Julie Eckel posted her conference-leading seventh shutout of the year in Friday's game against the Bulldogs and freshman Katie Cousins scored her first-career goal in Sunday's rivalry game against the Commodores.

The Vols currently lead the SEC and rank among the top 10 nationally in a number of defensive categories. They rank eighth in goals against average (0.41), sixth in save percentage (.907) and are tied for fourth in shutout percentage (.727).

Tennessee enters Friday's match with a 13-8 all-time record against Georgia, including three straight wins in the series prior to last season's 2-1 loss to the Bulldogs in Athens.

Georgia (2-7-1, 1-3 SEC) has struggled this season after advancing to the NCAA Tournament last year. However, the Bulldogs are coming off a big upset win over No. 4 Texas A&M for their first conference victory and will look to keep that momentum going against the Vols.

Sophomore defender Mariel Gutierrez leads Georgia with six points so far this season while other scoring threats include Marion Crowder and Bella Hartley, who have two goals apiece. Goalkeeper Louise Hogrell has played every minute in goal for the Bulldogs this season and ranks third in the conference with 44 saves.

The Big Orange have had some trouble scoring as of late, netting only two goals in the past three games. However, the Vols will look to change that on Friday night as Georgia has allowed 21 goals this season, the most of any team in the SEC.

There will be no live stream or television broadcast for Friday's game but live stats will be available HERE. Also, the first 650 fans through the gates will receive a free Tennessee soccer calendar.

The Vols will have a week off before their next game, which will be on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. ET against SEC rival Florida at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Hopefully Armchair is a little more optimistic about Cousins.

...a /touch/ more optimistic about Cousins because she's been more active in the last couple of games. But her pace/athleticism/quickness issues haven't gone away, and won't--a function of her build. She will get better with experience but was overrated a bit as a prospect. Not her fault. She has qualities but midfielders have to cover ground--run well--and that is not a strength.

Women's soccer team hoping to build on draws
The Daily Beacon
Posted: Thursday, October 1, 2015

Tennessee’s women’s soccer team finds themselves in strange company this week. The Vols and the Cal Poly Mustangs are the only two schools in Division 1 soccer that have five ties this season.
After picking up two draws last weekend against Mississippi State and Vanderbilt, 0-0 and 1-1 respectively, Brian Pensky’s squad is trying to find a way to close out key games as the season progresses.
“The thing that’s missing for us right now is a little bit of offensive production,” Pensky said before his team’s practice on Wednesday. “I think we would all be more discouraged if we weren’t playing good soccer. I feel like we’re playing well, but we just have to keep grinding.”
Tennessee (5-1-5) missed beating the Bulldogs on Friday by just a few inches, as a 15-yard shot from Gabby Santorio hit off the crossbar in the 56th minute of play. Ariel Kupritz’s team-high of three shots were close, but they just didn’t cut it in the end. Mississippi State’s scrappy style of play kept the Vols from taking a large amount of shots on goal during the game, holding Pensky’s squad to only three.
“Going on the road in this league is tough,” Pensky said. “Mississippi State turned around and tied a very good Missouri team on Sunday … (I’m) disappointed, certainly, that we didn’t get at least three points in at least one of the games.”
The Vols took a, 1-0, lead early in the Vanderbilt game courtesy of freshman Katie Cousins’ first college goal in the 22nd minute. However, the Commodores (5-5-2) held strong, and Jamie Kator blasted in the equalizer goal on an outside box free kick in the second half.
Neither team would score again as the clock ran down, and the Vols were credited with their fifth tie of the season.
Junior captain Anna McClung says that last weekend’s ties may feel like losses to the team, but she is confident in her team’s ability to bounce back.
“The energy and positivity on this team is great,” McClung said. “We haven’t really broken out. Yeah, we had an eight goal game, but I think that our best is still yet to come.”
The Vols, who now have the most single-season ties in program history, have also pulled out ties against Lipscomb, Liberty, and Virginia Tech this season. Both teams have scored a combined two goals in those games, with both instances being at Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt.
Pensky admits that he and his team can’t and won’t be content with tying.
“It’s a glass half-full, glass half-empty thing,” Pensky said. “I definitely find solace in the fact that we’ve played 11 games, and we’ve only lost one game. That’s pretty good … Between overtimes, these kids are dying to win.”
The Vols will look for their sixth win this Friday against Georgia at Regal Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

NEAL'S WINNER LIFTS VOLS TO 1-0 WIN OVER GEORGIA

Tennessee got back to its winning ways on Friday night with a 1-0 win over Georgia at Regal Soccer Stadium.

After the scoreless first half, Tennessee’s Amy Neal scored the lone goal of the game in the 60th minute with a header off an Emily Morrow corner kick. It was the fourth goal of the season for Neal, who is now tied with Anna McClung for the team lead.

Tennessee dominated the opening 45 minutes and did everything but put one in the back of the net. The Vols registered 11 shots in the first half and forced Georgia goalkeeper Louise Hogrell to make four saves.

The Big Orange came out firing in the second half as well, forcing Hogrell to make some more impressive stops early on before Neal’s breakthrough goal.

The Volunteers continued their stellar play defensively, posting their ninth shutout this season while holding the Bulldogs (2-8-1, 1-4 SEC) to just three shots on goal. Tennessee outshot Georgia, 19-14, on the night and also had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Julie Eckel posted her 31st career shutout in the win and moved within one shutout of the Tennessee all-time record of 32 held by Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart.

The Vols now have a week off before hosting SEC rival No. 12 Florida on Oct. 9 at Regal Soccer Stadium. Start time is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be streamed live on SEC Network +.

Big win for the Vols. UT absolutely needed a W tonight to keep alive its hopes of getting into the tournament. The scoring struggles continue--sounds like the Vols dominated the first half but could not get the ball in the next. Fortunately, Neal came through in the second half and we were victorious, for a change.

Next week's florida game will be a big opportunity for the Vols. A win would really boost morale going into the last five or so games--wow, the soccer season seems short. We'll have to play a lot better than we did when auburn came to Ktown recently, that's for sure.

I'm curious to know if Bialczak played some (mostly? none?) in midfield tonight. She didn't start but I read that she came in--twice, I think-- for midfielder Cousins, which suggests Bialczak was in the middle. If true, she's just the top of dynamic athlete we need in the middle of the field. We've four pretty good forwards in McClung, Neal, Kupritz and Bialczak. Moving Bialczak to midfield might be a smart move--strengthens the middle with somebody who is skilled and can run beautifully--and still leaves the Vols with three solid forwards. As i say, I don't know if the change was mad--but I'd applaud it if it did.

I had to smile, wanly, when I saw Marcano's line. I keep thinking she should play more, because she's talented offensively--and Pensky, who knows best, of course--has been playing her less. She was only on the field four 4 minutes tonight--but, not surprisingly, got a shot on goal in that time, one of our eight for the night. The girl hunts goals, that's for sure, and we need that. I'm guessing there are other aspects of her game that need work. Keep at it, everyone. This team does have potential.

Great win.
