Nice win. Just waiting around for armchair to tell us why it wasn't good enough. Expect a detailed analysis of the players and coaches weaknesses and how they will not be successful. Just his usual drivel.

VOLS JUMP ON ALABAMA EARLY IN 3-1 WIN
Tennessee remained unbeaten on the road this season after defeating Alabama, 3-1, on Sunday night in Tuscaloosa.

Tennessee’s offense had a breakout game to keep the Vols undefeated on the road after posting a 3-1 victory over Alabama on Sunday evening.

The Big Orange improved to 2-0-4 away from Knoxville this year while scoring the most goals in a conference game this season.

”I’m so proud of our team,” head coach Brian Pensky said. “Sunday’s are tough especially after a hard-fought, emotional game Friday night.

”It’s about finding a way to fight and stay focused on all the little details.”

Freshman Rylie O'Keefe put the Volunteers (7-2-5, 3-2-2 SEC) on top early with a low blast off a free kick from the edge of the box in the 10th minute. Anna McClung created the chance as she was taken down just outside the box and O’Keefe drove it home to the lower right corner for her first-career goal.

McClung nearly made it 2-0 in the 21st minute with another free kick from the top of the box. Alabama goalkeeper Emily Rusk saved the initial shot by McClung as well as the rebound headed towards goal by Amy Neal. O’Keefe nearly scored her second goal of the night in the 28th minute but her shot from distance was just over the crossbar.

The Vols held an 8-7 shot advantage and had four shots on goal in the opening frame compared to just one for the Crimson Tide.

After a couple of good chances earlier in the game, McClung finally broke through in the 67th minute to give UT a 2-0 lead. The junior from Gate City, Va., had an easy tap in for her team-leading fifth goal of the year after a perfect cross from Mackenzie Gouner.

The Tide answered 10 minutes later to cut the deficit to one. Molly Moroney netted her first goal of the year from about 12 yards out following a blocked shot in the box.

Tennessee regained its two-goal advantage in the 86th minute off a perfectly executed corner kick. It was another freshman who came up big for the Vols, as Anna Bialczak headed home her third goal of the season off Emily Morrow's service into the box to put UT up 3-1 with just minutes remaining.

The Volunteers have gotten major contributions from their freshmen class this season. With O’Keefe scoring tonight, Tennessee has now had eight true or redshirt freshmen score a goal this year.

”That class is doing a great job. There was a point I think in the last 20 minutes of Friday’s game against Florida were we had eight freshmen and sophomores on the field,” Pensky said.

Redshirt senior Julie Eckel made four saves on the night and became the all-time leader in career starts for a goalkeeper at Tennessee with 75, passing Ellen Dean.

The Vols are off until Sunday, Oct. 18 when they travel to Missouri to take on the Tigers at 2 p.m. ET in a game that will be nationally televised on ESPNU.

your own analysis--or maybe you aren't knowledgeable enough to have an opinion. I'd be happy for others to chime in--talking soccer on this board is a lonely experience. And, yea, I get that Vol fans don't like team criticism in the same way they don't like media columnists making harsh points about the football team--it's got to be roses and rah rah all the time for many even if the team is mediocre. I'm a fan of the soccer team and basketball team, but neither has been especially good in recent years, and if they have obvious weaknesses--such as our ragged offensive play--I'm going to say it. I also praise good performances.

And, yea, we got a crucial win today over bama--the worst team in the league, but a nice win after a tough loss to florida. We had two impressive plays off set pieces today--Bialczak's header off the late corner was brilliant, and O'Keefe's goal on her free kick was sweet--very well hit. Otherwise, we mostly controlled play but didn't create many quality chances--usual issue.

Next three games are huge if the Vols want to make the NCAA tournament. Vols have beaten or tied 5 teams in the bottom half of the conference, and lost to two of the best teams in the conference. The next three are against teams (kentucky, ole miss, missouri) tied with us or just ahead of us in the standings. Win and we can put ourselves at or near the top of the second tier teams. All will be tough but certainly winnable.

Saw some of Mississippi's defeat of South Carolina this evening--impressive game by the rebels, who looked better than their now 4-3 SEC record. They run well and are very well organized. They may have assured themselves a trip to the tourney with this win if they end up a bubble team, which makes it all the more important for UT to beat them in Ktown.

I look forward to your analysis after every game. I have a question, how many teams will they take from the SEC to get in the tournament?

Mad: I don't know. Last year 8 SEC teams got in--it was a pretty strong year for the conference. I would think that /at least six/ will make it and maybe more--maybe. This year we've been helped by having few losses but a lot of ties whereas last year we had too many losses and no really strong wins. We don't have a strong win yet this year. The next three-four games will be telling. If we can get two wins and a tie out of the last four, we'd be in, I think--but we're talking four competitive opponents--and south carolina is the sec's top ranked team. (The gamecocks did not look all that good last night.) It was our bad luck for Mississippi to beat SC, actually, as that will greatly help their cause if they are a tournament bubble team. We could get in with two wins and two losses in our next four, as we'd end the season with a better than 500 SEC record, which is big.

Thanks Armchair, keeping my fingers crossed. Have you ever been to the NCAA finals?

I have never been to the soccer Final Four. I'd certainly go if the Vols got to it. I watch it every year on TV.

I was at a Men's Final Four in Cary, NC, was an electric atmosphere. Would love to see Tennessee at the Final Four.

Coach Pensky & Julie Eckel will be on Vols Calls tonight at either 8:30 or 8:45! Be sure to tune in or go to Calhoun's to watch live!

This is a HUGE game for the Vols. With the crazy night that happened in the SEC tonight, Vandy beat South Carolina 2-1 and Ole Miss beat Auburn 2-0, Tennessee needs the 3 points to stay in the SEC race and keep the likelihood for a NCAA bid.

Wow, that's two straight defeats for South Carolina--and two straight big wins for Mississippi, which has now beaten south carolina and auburn back to back. I was impressed by mississippi in their match with South Carolina--very composed and everybody on the team runs well--and they obviously played very good again last night. South Carolina is not as good as they were last year, but still formidable. I will be interested to see what sort of attack the Vols can muster in the next few games. Can we score 2 or more goals in these games to complement our defense? We did against bama but the next four games are all against considerably better teams.

Tune in to ESPNU to watch your vols take on mizzou at 2 pm ET 🍊🍊

Mizzou strikes first with a goal in the 6th minute by Reagan Russell.

At the half, Tennessee trails Missouri 2-0. Tennessee also is down a player.

GOALLLL! Amy Neal scores for the Vols and cuts the lead to one! BeatMizzou

Bizarre sending off of Santorio, who seemed to get a red card and thus thrown out of the game for accidentally getting her legs tanged with the official. Maybe she said something, but I can't imagine what she'd have said that would merit a red card. I think the (crazy) official thought she ran into him on purpose. That didn't obscure the fact that the Vols were totally outplayed by Missouri in the first half. We need more athletic outside backs, and we are rather primitive in attack, to be candid--relying on great effort (as shown by Neal on her goal) when what good teams have is effort combined with possession and skill to create good chances. We get nothing in attack from our midfielders, and hence no combination play in front of the box. Our best attacking midfielder has played very little lately and has not played at all today (did she even make the trip?)--something doesn't seem good there. We had two huge corner kicks with the score 1-2--huge because when you are a man down they are hard to get opportunities, and both of them were terrible--didn't even get the ball in front of the box. Oh, well. We play hard but you need more than that.

I agree with everything you are saying, and yes, horrible corner kicks by Tennessee.

Is the audio working on the Pensky comments? Doesn't seem to be. I'm eager to hear what that call on Santorio was all about.
