I never would have thought about him being as successful as he has been this summer.
Nick Senzel is tied with three other players for most hits in the Cape Cod League with 22. His .333 BA is the 6th best in the league.
I saw where they had him at third. What's up with that? He also has a lot of Ks but I guess he is seeing the very best in pitching up in the Cape. Looks like he's stealin some bags too!!
Zack Godley had been waiting for the call to Double-A, but once his phone rang, he had to keep waiting before actually taking the mound.
Twelve days after his last regular-season start, the D-backs prospect tossed five two-hit innings in his Double-A debut on Wednesday night as Mobile blanked Jackson, 8-0, at the Ballpark at Jackson.
Godley (1-0) learned of his promotion before he traveled to Rancho Cucamonga for the California/Carolina League All-Star Game on June 23. He got the start for the home team, allowing a run on two hits and a walk while registering two outs, then waited a week before getting back on the field.
"It was awesome. It was something that I was really excited [for]. I didn't know what [the D-backs] wanted to do with me, but I was definitely excited about the opportunity they were giving me," Godley said. "I was anxious not getting on the mound for the whole last series, waiting on my rotation to start here tonight. Definitely a little nerves running."
Admittedly anxious, Godley loaded the bases with one out in his first inning in the Southern League. After Mariners No. 30 prospect Ian Miller reached on an error and Tyler Bortnick singled, the 25-year-old right-hander struck out D.J. Peterson -- Seattle's second-ranked prospect -- but walked Jabari Blash. Daniel Paolini hit Godley's next pitch to shortstop for an inning-ending double play.
"The biggest thing was trying to work ahead and try to get a strikeout, maybe get a groundout and just trying to minimize the damage as much as I could. And I ended up being able to do that," Godley said. "It was real huge. It's really good to have that happen, to be able to get that strikeout and then to be able to get that double-play ball, it was awesome.
"Just to go into the jam in the first inning is intense, but to be able to ... I just tried to make sure I located my pitches and minimize it as much as I could. And I ended up getting out of it."
Godley ran into little trouble the rest of the way, plunking Miller in the third and allowing a single to Mariners No. 25 prospect Tyler Smith in the fifth. He was otherwise perfect, picking up a pair of strikeouts along the way.
"I think I did well. I got behind guys a little bit too much," he said. "But I did what I could to keep the ball down and just [tried] to get ground balls and let my defense work. And they played really well behind me."
The University of Tennessee product left Class A Advanced Visalia with a Cal League-leading 2.27 ERA. He also ranked second with 78 strikeouts and, because he also was promoted in the middle of last season, knew what to expect this time.
"The jump last year was something I had never done before and it helped me out this go-around, being able to come up and get into the groove of things," Godley said. "Just [looking] to keep competing and try to keep the ball down and let my defense work and hopefully, I can just continue to throw up zeros."
Daniel Gibson, D-backs No. 16 prospect Jimmie Sherfy and No. 30 prospect Adam Miller followed Godley and combined for four hitless innings in the BayBears' third straight win.
"They were unreal," Godley said. "It's great to be able to know that you can give the ball over to the bullpen and know they are going to pound the zone and keep it rolling."
Mariners No. 6 prospect Edwin Diaz (2-6) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on 10 hits and a walk while striking out six in seven frames for Jackson.
Just for fun...
