Official 2018 Summer Ball Thread

Oh, and The Goldpanners need to rejoin the ABL...6 teams instead of five, which means that a team doesn't have to take a day off...plus PannerVision would be back!

This is what I mean as far as the Northwoods League...

Nobody else is even close to this...

Zach Daniels gets some love on a diving catch at the 11:14 mark in the video above.

So, listening to Thunderbay (E. Russell) and live stats...

There are two guys in the line-up with a BA over .226...2 dudes below the Mendoza...Evan is one of them.

From yesterday's game...

Thousand Oaks, CA
With the score 4-4, Jay Charleston (Tennessee) tripled to lead off the ninth inning and scored the game winning run on an infield grounder to lead the San Luis Obispo Blues to a 5-4 win over the Conejo Oaks in the opening game of the 2018 CCL season at Sparky Anderson Field. The triple was Charleston’s third hit of the game, a total matched by his teammate from Tennessee, Luc Lipcius, who notched three singles to share game-high honors. San Luis Obispo jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning after loading the bases with no outs, getting RBI-singles from Tanner Thompson and Charleston and a third run on a bases-loaded walk. The Blues added a run in the fourth inning when Thompson reached on an error and would eventually score on a passed ball. The Oaks answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Brandon Lewis (UC Irvine) hit a two-out double and scored on an error, and Sam Shaikin (Valparaiso) added an RBI-single, and Conejo then tied the score at 4-4 in the seventh inning on a two-out, two-run single by Elijah Alexander (Rio Grande Valley). Frankie Scalzo (San Jose St) started on the mound for the Blues, pitching five innings with five strikeouts before turning the ball over to the bullpen. TJ Mullins (Grayson) picked up the win with a scoreless ninth inning of work, getting a groundball double-play to secure the win.

Thru 5 Games....Luc is batting .647, Jay is batting .333

Yesterday was the first league game, the others were exhibition...

If they played travel ball wood bats are the norm. Shouldn't not be an adjustment.

I dunno who has played travel ball and who hasn't...I have noticed in the NWL, because many of their parks are former minor league parks, there is an adjustment period, especially with young players that have just finished playing 50-60 games w/college bats.

We haven't had a lot of guys in that league through the Serrano years.

It is. Much diffent level for pitching than travel ball

Not sure I understand...PG is a wood bat heavy league...pitcher's learn to pound the hands and hitter's learn to barrel it up. PG showcases are primarily wood bat to showcasw batting power...

HecK everyone on this site spoke about two PG pitches coming to TN, how can you dismiss the importance of travel ball offense?

Daniels goes 0-3, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 SB...announcers were very complimentary of Zach, had good at bats and was disruptive on the bases. He's BA isn't great, but his OB% is good...

That's it for tonight...

Let me put it another way...the pitching in the CCL makes what Luc and Jay are doing, so far, unsurprising. It's what you would expect.

The pitching in some of the leagues is much better. And what is happening with some of these guys batting around .200 or less, is not surprising...for now.

At least to me.

Really like Zach. I was disappointed Vitello sat him even with the strike outs (yes, understand Russel's) performance was good). Question is how does he work into the outfield next season?

Either way, it's going to take most of players the month of June to get into a rhythm with the lack of play most got May.

I've only learned one thing about summer ball Birdie...it doesn't always translate back to the SEC.

The exception, if there is one, is the Cape. For Hitters, but it doesn't apply to pitchers. I don't know why.

Everything else...means little. I have no idea who will be starting anywhere next season. A guy as consistent as Will Neely, might look like another guy next year...it's weird...it's baseball.

Talked with someone close to Russell earlier tonight , said he’s flustrated, says he’s hit some balls hard but right at guys. Says it’s cold in Canada and he hates the Rawlings ash bats. But also ended the conversation and said he’s never struggled like this , but said something he’s got to keep working to get through. Mentally tough kid and a grinder , baseball is tough and Evan knows this , be interested to see how this continues, what I have seen thus far, bet he grinds it out !!!

That's what I'm saying...it's a "for now" it will get better...and there's a certain amount of "getting to know a new team" and the art of "the HANG" (Do you fit in)...it's hard...

Look at Nick Senzel's summer in Alaska...his coach comes up for a few days and he's lights out, CDS leaves and it's back to dismal and leaving before he was half way through the season.

My message for any of the players, especially the Northwoods guys is...

This is what you think you want...learn to love it.
