Official 2018 Summer Ball Thread

As far as travel ball. , never seen many kids swing Rawlings Ash bats. And never seen a tournament in June when all the players where wearing hoodies , 40 in June is cold. Lol.

Think about playing for the Giant's, it can be 40 there in June...Just have to push through it. It will get better, and it will get warmer too. :)

The Northwoods League is not like travel ball. It's a job. It's great if it's a job you want to have, it sucks if it's a job you hate...but there's a lot of area scouts there, for young guys, it's a place a conversation gets started about the Cape the next year.

Not sure I understand...PG is a wood bat heavy league...pitcher's learn to pound the hands and hitter's learn to barrel it up. PG showcases are primarily wood bat to showcasw batting power...

HecK everyone on this site spoke about two PG pitches coming to TN, how can you dismiss the importance of travel ball offense?

Travel baseball is vs HS arms.
Sure they see some elite one but it's every once and awhile. That first summer in collegiate wood bat leagues is the first time a player swings wood vs college arms every single at bat. Not really close to travel ball

didn't know if this was the right place, or even thread-worthy, but Sean Hunley was named Freshman AA by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper...A Lip made it last year...and

GO BIG ORANGE!

NORTHWOODS LEAGUE = 72 games in 76 Days , have to swing Rawlings Ash bats , 8-10 hours of commute time. What an experience though, should be about as tough of a baseball experience there is with the exception of the Big Leagues. Got to play a huge role in the development of a player. Facing College arms every day with horrible wood bats, not much of a way for a player not to get better in that type situation. After trully looking into the NWL , I like what they are trying to do. REALLY TOUGH but the players should be so much better , if they can stick it out...Go VOLS!!! is all i can say!!!

Copperheads sneak out of Jefferson City with a win

Tuesday night was an eventful one for the Smokey Mountain baseball league as the Copperheads traveled to Jefferson City to take on the Eagles. It’s the Eagles first home game and they looked to continue their hot streak by sending Will Heflin out on the mound. The Copperheads countered with Richard Jackson as they looked to stay undefeated as well.

Seth Hunt, Dom Leo, and Cade Gilbert tagged Heflin early by getting back to back base hits and a triple to start the game. After a four run first Heflin settled in and held the Copperheads scoreless for three more innings of work. He would hand the game off to Logan Hogburn and Austin Collins who would combine for three more scoreless innings and four strikeouts.

The Eagles offense took a while to wake up the bats but after falling down by four early it was extremely impressive to see a group fight back they way their hitters did. After being no hit for four innings the Eagles made the most of their next nine outs. They left six men on base and the bases loaded in the 6th which would ultimately come back to bite them. The entire lineup found ways to put their team in a scoring position but the Copperhead pitching staff chose the right day to be lights out.

After Richard Jackson left the game with a no hitter intact Greg Valentine would get his team to the sixth and Greg Tye would enter and strike out two Eagles with the base loaded and with a one run lead. Brock Beeler would come in the 7th and close the game out in 1-2-3 fashion and seal the 4-0 start on the year.

The match of the undefeated’s was ultimately a great game to see this early in the season and there is no doubt it will be a game to watch as the season continues. Pitching has been the brightest spot for the majority of the season so look to see even better match ups when the bats start to wake up.

Richard Jackson took home Player of the Game honors as he threw 4 no hit innings with 5 strike outs and only giving up one walk. He has continued to shine when his team needs him and there is no doubt we will continue to see the same as his team progresses and bonds as the Smokey Mountain league continues.

Catch both teams back in action Thursday night in Jefferson City and Knoxville Catholic.

IS THE NORTHWOODS LEAGUE THE BEST SUMMER LEAGUE?
by Andrew Wirtanen

The Northwoods League ( NWL) is a collegiate summer baseball league in the Upper Midwest. Since founded in 1994, the NWL has grown to 20 teams with the most attendance of any summer league. TwinCities Business published an in-depth look at the league's history and finances: A League of His Own (May 25, 2018).

What makes the NWL possibly better than the CCBL?

Games are at minor league-quality ballparks, some of which were vacated by Major League Baseball as they moved franchises further south for larger cities and better spring weather.
The NWL and its franchises seem to have more money than any other summer league; this is because the NWL is for-profit, and teams operate in larger markets than the CCBL. More money means that the league and its franchises can invest more in the fan and player experience.
The Grind. Unlike the CCBL, teams must take long bus rides to travel between cities, which more accurately replicates what a player will experience in the minors.
Ultimately, both leagues have their unique appeal. The NWL fills a void left by former Minor League and independent ball clubs in the Upper Midwest. The CCBL provides a nostalgic experience with town-based teams.

The most significant difference between the leagues? The CCBL has the top talent. In the 2017 MLB draft, 253 CCBL alumni were selected, with 10 players in the first round (CCBL's MLB Draft results). The NWL had 181 alumni selected, with no players in the first round (NWL's MLB Draft results).

Looks like the main action tonight will be in the Coastal and Northwoods...I won't be able to make those games unless I get home earlier than expected...

Sounds like a great start for Richard, not so much for Will.

Thanks!

Good to see the young guys playing. It's early, no matter what the line on any of them; it's playing time and thats development.

I may end up regretting this...

There hasn't been a group of Tennessee players going to the Cape for a summer that I anticipate doing better than this group as a whole. Andrew Lee surprised some people, very successful campaign, as much for his hitting as for his pitching. Taylor Smart had a good summer, just off the top of the head...he was a temporary player that stuck the whole summer. Stewie in Orleans...

This an exciting time for all of them, and I hope they show out.

isn't that what the summer is about...good anticipation toward the regular season...it is for me...:)

GO BIG ORANGE!

Does anyone know the average travel time of the Cape Cod and some of the other leagues.
I did a little research for the NWL and not only do they play every day, The travel time is insane....
Example: today they travel..425 miles...play friday, saturaday, travel 477 miles play sunday
& monday....travel 639 miles and play tuesday.....

wondering if all leagues are set up this way... Really interesting to me after thinking about this....I tip my hat to All these players that make this type of commitment...

The Cape doesn't have any travel like that...Alaska, 4 out of the 5 teams are close together...the California league has some drives, but not as bad as the Northwoods...

Those places I mentioned have built in vacations to them, they go to a Glacier in Alaska, Sea fishing at the Cape, the beaches of California...They don't get to do any of that in the NWL...It's a for profit business.

don't think we've had any players in the NY Prospect League however some of their drive times are loooong, 12 hours.
