Official Boxing thread

Nothing official but pulled out of the fight this weekend because of money surrounding the fight he was scheduled to have later this year against Bute.

Pavlik:
"So everybody thinks right now, ‘Oh, hey, you pulled out because of personal problems, this, that.’ No, I pulled out because I don’t need to fight no more…I will retire. I don’t need the money that bad. It ain’t going to happen. ... What they’re trying to do is cash out. They’re saving the money. They want to pay me $1.1 [million]. $3 million is there, but that’s what they’re cashing out on. They’re going to say, ‘You know what? We’re going to pocket $2 million. He’s going to lose the fight, and we’re done with him.’ And that’s it. That’s how it works. ... The whole thing comes down to I’m tired of playing the game."

But there's other thoughts out there about what's happening.

Arum:
"The way I read it is that he doesn’t want to fight anymore. ... I don’t know what more you can do. So it seems to me, coming the way it did, the week of the fight, it seems to me that he has second thoughts about fighting. ... I’m really troubled by this. It’s got nothing to do with him fighting or not fighting. I’m past that. I’m really troubled by what’s happening with him as a person."

Not that Bob Arum is a pillar of truth and above "spinning" things but just given with what happened with his brother not too long ago, seems there might be more at work here than a money issue.

The mythical Alfredo Angulo (I was beginning to question whether he was a figment of my imagination or not) has signed with Golden Boy, he'll be fighting on 8/20 on ESPN3

Yeah, there's talk that this could pave the way for a Canelo vs. Angulo match up. I'd love to see it but I'm skeptical it'll happen, I think GB is counting on Alvarez to be a big time meal ticket and, for all of his many flaws, Angulo is a big time puncher. A little too dangerous for him right now.

Agree, Angulo has career psyche ruining hands when he gets a shot to tee off. Canelo really shouldn't be playing around with punchers until he can get quite a bit more sound.

Exactly. I'd still take Alvarez to win 8 out of 10 times between the two on points, but the two I'd give to Angulo are because of the ability for it to end very ugly for Canelo.

Pretty damn good final FNF going on right now and still the main to come. Espn has had a really good year with these cards.

Slim to none. By the end of 24/7 I'm sure they'll have done enough to make me want to believe but I just don't see it (unless there has been some significant drop off for Floyd during his lay off, which I doubt).

He landed this because Floyd needed a comeback fight and his name sounded good because of a very exciting win over Berto earlier this year. Problem is, Berto hasn't proven to be anything other than an HBO hype product so far. None on his previously undefeated record were really worth a damn.

That is exactly what happens to me. 24/7 gets me thinking the same way. I saw his fight against Berto, and was hoping he had some power to give Floyd some troubles.

He will have the a puncher's chance because he does have decent pop but (again prefacing it with my comments about Maywhether's skills not having diminished) Floyd is a defensive genius and I just don't see him ending up in the positions that Berto did. He'll win rounds with ease and only go for anything significant if he really thinks hes got Ortiz in trouble, he won't go in looking to war in search of a KO like Berto did.

The Floyds really showed their ass on that first 24/7. That was embarrasing to watch.

JTrain you still alive brother? Did those rains get you up there?

What else is new? The money stack/phone scene with Jr. and 50 in the second was even worse to me. It was so uncomfortable and went on forever.

Was just wondering this yesterday.

Also, shameless plug for my favorite current fighter, Gamboa fights again this Saturday night. It's a late card on HBO, figure it might be timed pretty well to flip over to after the UM vs. ND game. I'm thinking they'll line up pretty well because they are showing the replay from the Adamek/Vitali fight from earlier in the day first.

Thanks for the heads up. Want to see him fight. Full night of good TV.

If he fights like he did his last time out, you will definitely not be disappointed. Before that, he would show flashes of brilliance in dominating wins but also frustrate the hell out of me by clutching and grabbing once he was comfortably ahead. In his last fight he put it all together and was unreal.

whats the vegas odds on the mayweather vs ortiz fight? They filter everything at work.

And again gamboa does well but not as well as he can. A bit disappointing from an entertainment standpoint but he still flashed why he can be great
