Official Boxing thread

I dislike Mayweather as much as anyone, but you're an idiot if you're giving him crap over this. A guy headbutts him and then starts hugging and kissing him. F Ortiz. He deserved what he got. As for Merchant, he's an embarrassment. Larry, if you were 50 years younger, maybe Floyd would have taken a swing at you and done us all a favor. Never having to hear him speak again would be delightful.

What you think of the BHop v Dawson?

Any other fights coming up soon to keep an eye on?

If Hopkins wants to keep doing this there will eventually be a day where his age will catch up with him, I just don't think it'll be this day. Dawson is more technically sound that Pascal was for Hopkins and he probably has the skills to win but I don't think he has the make up to do so. Bernard will ugly up the fight (which I say as a positive thing) and when he does I don't think Dawson has the focus or discipline to do enough of the things he needs to do to stay effective. I'd guess UD, 8 rounds to 4 or so.

This Saturday HBO has a pretty good card, the headliner is Sergio Martinez, who I can watch fight anybody, but I don't expect this to be the most competitive of bouts. He's fighting Darren Barker who has some European championships but hasn't really fought anyone of much significance.

Also on the card is the Andy Lee - Brian Vera rematch though. Neither guy is or will be a world beater but they put on a good show in their first go round.

After that the schedule kind of drys up though, with the Pac - Marquez fight on Nov. 12 being the next fight of any real note.

This thread has kind of died with the loss of JTrain but Nonito Donaire is about to fight on HBO and he's probably number 3 on the P4P list behind Pac and May(Sergio Martinez would argue against it). Not sure it'll be a good fight but he's always worth watching.

I tried watching that but I fell asleep. :banghead2:

...anyone know what happened to train? He hasn't been on since august.

Don't worry, you didn't miss much. Seemed like Donaire tried a couple of times early on to open things up a little bit but Navarez was having none of it. He was content to stay behind his guard, not take any risks, lose every round, and say he lasted the full 12. Nonito was even talking about being bored between some of the later rounds in his corner.

No clue about JTrain, been wondering the same thing.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. wants to make 'biggest fight possible' May 5 - ESPN

First time he has ever wanted that...

"We're going to do everything in our power to make the biggest fight out there for the fans and we all know what the fight is."

Probably more lies from Mayweather's camp. Get everyone excited so they can sucker punch the fans.

Not really a boxing fan but I hope Manny stomps Floyd's ass after his years of crap talking and ducking fights. That sucker punch adds even more incentive to seeing him get pulverized

Mayweather got absolutely owned by Rude Jude today for any Sirius customers out there. I only listen to Shade 45 occasionally so I missed it live, but he basically called into the All Out Show to call out Jude for accusing him of ducking Pacquiao and made absolutely no sense. Dude is too sensitive for my liking.

Should be interesting to see if Floyd tries to pull strings to get Jude out considering the Mayweather-50 Cent-Eminem connection. Not that I think Jude would be forced out by Eminem, but I wouldn't put it past FM to try.

I dunno what the policy is for even linking something like that but just Google Rude Jude v Floyd Mayweather and listen for yourselves.

I wasn't around at the time to have the opportunity to watch Joe Frazier fight live but, having gone back and watched the majority of the great heavyweights from that era, Frazier will always be one of my favorite fighters.

My grandfather used to tell me about growing in NYC and having to have "your guy" between Mick, Willie, and Duke. My dad described it the same way between Ali and Frazier, Frazier would have definitely been my guy. Most people would say Ali was the better fighter, and it's be hard to argue with them, but I don't think many people ever looked forward to facing a fighter less than when they had to go up against Frazier.

Sad day.

Judges:

114-114 - I can agree with this.
115-113 - Manny - not sure sure he/she saw.
116-112 - Manny - no way in hell he won 8 rounds.

This was how I saw it but I could definitely see how a draw would have been fitting.

Did you give Round 12 to Manny?

I did, which is what stopped me from calling it an outright draw. It was almost too close to call but I felt like if I absolutely had to give a 10 to one guy that round it would go to the more aggressive fighter. Neither really sold out but I thought Marquez ran a bit, thinking he had it already sewn up.

That being said, I've read reviews from people whose opinions I respect ranging all the way from 116-112 for Marquez down to the score I had for Pac, and I have trouble disregarding with any of their assessments. The final score has a lot to do with the subjective view in which you value scoring in boxing.

I watched the UK broadcast and they were just hammering the decision. Just out of curiosity, which rounds did you have Pac winning?

I gave him 1, 2, 4, 8, 10, 11, 12.

From what I've read, most people seem to disagree with my score most in rounds 2 and 12, which were extremely tough to decide on. If you give JMM one of those, you get a draw, both and he wins 115-113. Although it goes against how I would have scored it, either of those results would be hard to adamantly refute. But, what I just don't see is how you can give three of those to him for a 116-112 total as some have stated.

Down goes Ruiz.

.....boom.

...and it's not looking good for Cintron.

After more than 2 years and plenty of speed bumps along the way, what started out as a bit of a revolutionary (albeit naive) idea will come to a close with what should be a good fight.

The Super 6 Tournament Finals are tomorrow night on Showtime with the Andre Ward vs. Carl Froch fight. Looking forward to this one, hope Ward can show something special. I'd go with a Ward UD but I'd love to see a good fight with a late stoppage.

So I know w/o JTrain this thread has died but tonight ShowBox has a great card going on. I'm watching on dvr and behind the live action, haven't even made the main event yet but the first two fights are fantastic. This is why obsessing over will they or won't they for Pac and Floyd is BS, good fights are happening all the time!
