Official Daytona 500 race thread

the stands were fairly empty when it started to rain. No way they stay an extra 5 hours. It just doesn't happen. Not in baseball, football, golf, tennis or any other sport that can be weather delayed.

What is more important, 5000 fans at the track or 15 million watching tv?

they shouldnt start the race at freaking 3:30 plus watching a homo sing the natl' anthem

it rained earlier, so even a 1 PM scheduled start would have put the green near 3. Weather happens, better to just call it rather than finish at 11 or run tomorrow.

I agree with the first part. Why???? Why do you start a race that late on the eastern side of the United States?

People may disagree with me but Brian France is not cut out to run NASCAR. He is an idiot. Maybe he is not directly involved in some of the calls but he runs the show and it's his place to put the right people in charge and it's his place to have smart rules in place to prevent the stupidity in NASCAR. Look at the Jr. and Vickers deal. If Robby Gordon hit vickers like that he would have been parked immediately. Vickers had every right to block Jr. knowing that NASCAR would call it at the drop of a raindrop and them fighting for the lap back.

Valid point, but the $$$ is the bottom line. Not sure they lost any advertising revenue and not sure if they would have gained any by staying on longer. Those contracts were already written and finalized. The costs to keep everything going had to be a determining factor. That and the fact that it didn't stop raining in Daytona until just after 9.

I'm with starting the race about 1pm. Screw the west coast, NASCAR is a southern thing. Get home from church, watch racing. It's not get home from church, wait three hours, then watch racing.

At most races it is Mike Helton making the call, but France may be the one at Daytona.

Looking at radar, the rain moved south of Daytona about 9 pm. A little late to start trying to dry the track and get 50 more laps in IMO.

For the Daytona 500 I would not put Monday out of question to finish it. This is like calling game 7 of the World Series after 6 innings for rain. If this is California or any other track i can deal with it but not the sport's Super Bowl.

I am happy for Matt Kenseth but this just isn't the same as taking the checkered flag at Daytona.

I wonder if Fox didn't have some say in the quick call. It really screws up their programming.

pushing it to Monday would have been a different story, but that's a different set of rules. It also puts a huge burden on the drivers. I know everyone likes to think "one more day isn't going to bother the drivers as much as they think, but these guys work about 15-18 hours a day, typically 6 days a week minimum. Monday as a travel/breakdown day and Tuesday off is about the best chance at rest they get. Just because it looks and sounds glamorous (which much of it is and they do make a lot of money), it takes a toll to be down there for ten days brand new only to start all over again on Wednesday.

likely so, because they would definitely lose ad revenue from shows they didn't get to show because of the show. Obviously, they could cut to regular programming, but they'd still lose at least 2 hours of programming and I may be mistaken, but at one time, Sunday was one of Fox's biggest nights.

They have always called a race official after half distance if unable to finish that day. I don't think they should change that, but try harder to get it in.

Yes Fox would have maybe missed a 28th season episode of The Simpsons. I also agree with Broyles in that the TV people are more important anyway. And I still think there would have been alot of people stuck around for the race no matter what time it went off. Most people go under the concourses or to their cars and wait it out so it looks emptier. I've seen it rain at Bristol and look like a ghost town and its not called off and then when they make the call for drivers to come back to their cars the stands fill back up pretty quickly.

I also agree with the earlier start time - I hate this crap of making sure we coetoe to the West Coast viewers. I have nothing against them but geez - its like lets make it "prime" for them and make it inconvenient for the East Coast people now.

I agree but I would make the Daytona 500 the lone exception. It would just add to the prestige of the race knowing it's the only one that MUST be completed. If it wasn't the biggest race of the year I wouldn't care. I just hate seeing the season start out like this. Looks like another year of Goodyear problems too. Not sure I can blame Goodyear when they have to find a tire that will work on the COT.

That is a puzzle to me. I find it very difficult to believe Goodyear cannot bring a tire that works. They really don't have to worry about speed, there is no competition.

I realize that but they won't have as much data on the outside the box setups teams are using which is abusing their tire in certain cases.

Tony Stewart seems to think Goodyear is the problem and he should know if anyone does. On the other hand, these guys push the limits on their alignment angles which doesn't help. I would love to see what Michelin could do if given the chance to make a race tire for NASCAR.

Perhaps a little tire competition would be a good thing.

this isn't the first race or even the first Daytona 500 ever called for rain and i'm fairly sure it won't be the last.

i've been to more than my fair share of races that were called because of rain. the half way rule has been in existence long before almost all of us were born.

it sucks, but that's the way it is and that's the way it's going to be.

I respectfully disagree with you here Bill. Its the biggest race of the season and I think the fans would have stayed for sure. Tomorrow is a Federal Holiday and I'm fairly sure that people would have stayed there as long as it took to run those last 50 laps. Maybe I'm wrong but I really feel that way.

Agreed. Some fans had been treated to great racing all through speedweeks. I'm sure 3 hours wasn't going to lure them away from the finish of Nascar's "Super Bowl."

I believe the last 500 called for rain was M. Waltrip's second 500 win. I felt cheated that year and I do again this year. That being said, I am not sure what the answer for NASCAR is. Nonetheless, that is how I feel.

Why schedule California after Daytona? An off week would give them more options in these situations or schedule a closer event following Daytona.

I still think Nascar should move the Daytona July event to the last race of the year. Start there and finish there!

Yeah I didn't like that either BUT Michael Waltrip that day had led like 70 of the 102 laps they ran. He had the dominant car for the part of the race that they had ran by far. Kenseth's win is harder for me to swallow as I still just honestly feel that he got super lucky and if they would have even ran ONE more green flag lap he wouldn't have been leading the race.

Dirty - yeah, Kenseth was just in the right place at the right time as they say. He was hardly deserving to be called the Daytona 500 champ.
