Official Daytona 500 race thread

What a great run today by Micheal Waltrip a very quiet 7th place I think and teammate David Reutimann a 12th place finish a good day for MW Racing!

Well I honestly doubt they could have restarted but Kenseth has to be the most undeserving Daytona 500 champion ever for leading 1/2 lap under green. He had a decent car to be up there but IMO he certainly didn't even have one of the top 5-6 cars left in the race. He just passed him at the perfect time. Not saying Sadler was any more deserving either though - that was just a hugely disappointing race to start the season out with. I hope that's not a sign of things to come.

That seems to be the pattern lately, one car dominates the race and another one that no one expected wins the race. How many laps did Harvick lead in 2007? Or Newman last year? Or Kenseth this year? Not many I'm guessing.

I understand what you are saying there BUT at least all of those races went to the end. This race ended on a fluke caution that didn't even need to come out because Almirola spun harmlessly to the infield. If they would have ran that extra lap or two laps I'm sure things would have turned out much differently.

Since no responded in the other thread, I'm bringing it up here. Jr. is a bigger problem than Eury. It has to kill Eury that Jr. can't tell him anything about what the car is doing.

Wrong! You must not listen to races on the scanner much. From my experiences and most others that I talk to, Jr. tells Eury what the car is doing. Eury just happens to be one of the worst crew chiefs in ths sport and can't fix it.

Oh, and to add further insult to this whole fiasco of a called finish to the race I have a friend down there that said it quit raining at the track about 7:30. She said yes it WAS soaked at the time but she texted me and said it hadn't rained any since then. I looked at the radar and its gone. They could have easily had that track dry by 10:00 for a 50 lap sprint. They should make every last attempt to have the "Super Bowl of Racing" ran to the finish.

That was a pathetic excuse for a Daytona 500. It's one thing to call a rain delayed race at an unimportant track in the middle of the summer and doing that to the biggest race of the year. They need to make the Daytona 500 exempt from this and guarantee the full race. I don't care that Kenseth one but disappointed in the show, or lack of. Why not wait all night if they have to and run the race? It's the Daytona 500. Brian France is a joke, that guy is the worst thing to happen to NASCAR. No wonder their ratings started dropping after that clown took over.

i would like to know how other drivers honestly feel about Jr.. im a big Jr fan but im beginning to lose my liking for him.. today was one of the biggest bitch moves ive ever witnessed. who misses their pit not once but twice and then goes and wrecks half the field on what seemed to be a temper tantrum?? and then to go say nascar should look at changing a rule that you blatantly violated? it also seems like not as many people are willing to follow jr like they used to. years ago when he pulled out, everyone followed. now, he is still the first one to try and pull out but seems to have trouble getting followers. thoughts?

You would think with NASCAR being more aware than ever of the economic situation they would want as much positive publicity going into next week as possible - especially considering it is at California. First, we have MORE Goodyear problems like always and then they call a race prematurely. I'm sure that will really help them sell more tickets for California. I honestly won't be surprised if they have an all time record low attendance next weekend.

no one would have stayed for it to get started 30 minutes from now. They might have wound up with 5500 fans total. Add to that the cost of keeping the track open and running while nothing is going on, the weak economy was probably the first thing on their mind.

I respectfully disagree with you here Bill. Its the biggest race of the season and I think the fans would have stayed for sure. Tomorrow is a Federal Holiday and I'm fairly sure that people would have stayed there as long as it took to run those last 50 laps. Maybe I'm wrong but I really feel that way.

DW just said on Speed that it's still raining in Daytona, so they couldn't have started it back up. The biggest problem I have is the start time. 3:30 is ridiculous. Let's start the race at 1 like we used to and we would've avoided all of this.

I think they should have tried to get the race in. They have almost always giving more time in the past. Besides I stood to gain points in the Pick ' Em.

I wouldn't go so far to call the Nat. Anthem singer a homo with no knowledge of him. But he sure sucked as a singer.

the stands were fairly empty when it started to rain. No way they stay an extra 5 hours. It just doesn't happen. Not in baseball, football, golf, tennis or any other sport that can be weather delayed.

Agreed!!!

Looking at radar, the rain moved south of Daytona about 9 pm. A little late to start trying to dry the track and get 50 more laps in IMO.
