Official Daytona 500 race thread

Why schedule California after Daytona? An off week would give them more options in these situations or schedule a closer event following Daytona.

I still think Nascar should move the Daytona July event to the last race of the year. Start there and finish there!

My first thought was to agree, but then I realized the Cup Championship could be decided by a similar debacle to last night.

Disappointing finish to say the least. I guess the best part was little e inadvertently wrecking kyle busch.

Ehh, the July 4th weekend race is one of the better racing days of the year, right alongside yesterday and the Memorial Day weekend, with the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600.

thus pumping life into a dying horse...

I would hate to see a season long competition decided by a boneheaded move taking out a contender(s). Too much is out of your own hands at Daytona. Same as Talladega and Bristol.

I say we cut the season down from 36, to 24 races, and have the Chase start after race 20.

Radical? Yes. Workable? Absolutely.

I wish they would have tried a little harder to get the race back going. I would have stayed up late to watch it. I'm glad to see Kenseth win, I like Matt, he is a good, clean race driver and a student of my all time favorite driver, Mark Martin. But I definately feel cheated because you don't feel the same about a winner unless they take the checkered flag on track.
On another note, someone mentioned feeling cheated about Waltrips second 500 win. I can see their point, but I don't think I felt to bad about that one, since, given the circumstances of his first win, I felt he could actually enjoy the second one.

Yes, you would have. However, then, you risk going against the NBA All-Star game for ratings(at least with some I know).

Here's my opinion.

Get rid of California, Michigan, Chicagoland, Kansas, and any other 2 mile oval I forgot about. The races there are an absolute borefest.

Add Memphis, Nashville, Mansfield, and a few more road courses. Those road courses are the true test of a drivers skill. Also, a street race, like the Indy and F1 cars do, should not be too far off from now.

It pales in comparison to The 500 and Indy. The 600 is a joke.

Oh yea, the Indy 500 is definitely the better of the two races. However, the 600 is watched by more people than the Indy 500 nowadays, and that's not likely to change.

600 miles is a bit much.

Its usually just not that competitive and very boring. My point was if you asked the average Joe to name a big race the top vote getters would be the Indy and Daytona. If you move the July event to last you could have two big time events. Even if the Cup is already decided it would still draw interest. I also disagree with those worried about it deciding the Champion outcome. It would just raise the bar. Who wants to watch somebody sandbag it to the title.

You don't like ending at that bastion of racing history...Homestead?...

Talk about a cluster - those cars would be banging off the retaining walls all the way around a street circuit like Long Beach. I don't think Cup cars have the set up to make a pass on a street circuit - without crunching someone into the wall that is. :)

So much fun..........Not much different than Martinsville and Bristol actually.

The Australians seem to have it figured out.

I don't understand why they can't race at Road Atlanta or VIR. Those would be great tracks for NASCAR.

I have to disagree about Michigan. There are four distinct lines allowing lots of side by side racing. A Good track to attend as you can see most or all of the track depending where you sit.

Mansfield is not in the same galaxy as Cup Venues. I lived there. I agree about more road courses, but I detest street courses. Follow the leader races.

Nascar needs to find a way to juice it up a little. I say stop giving some tracks two races. Pocono is a borefest, california is too. Build a couple of more short tracks and maybe another superspeedway with some banking on it Whoever suggested daytona for the final race, i like it. They should cut about a month and half of races off the schedule. They shouldn't be racing in november. Make the chase six races long and put some tracks in there that are entertaining races. Junk the COT and go back to building their own cars. Give the crew chief back his car and let him work on it, instead of mandating certain spring and shock combinations, etc, etc. Don't give them a license to cheat, but let them work on their cars again. I guess i'm just old school, i miss the nascar of the 90's.
