Official GOP Convention thread

I would take RP and GJ voting record over Mitt R. and Ryan's voting record all day everyday, but these days it seems nobody wants to look at voting records, they just want feel good speeches. We will pay a price for that one day.

I don't get the earmark criticism of RP. He believes primarily his job as congressman is to vote with the constitution. He does that. Secondarily he votes for liberty in all things. He does that. Tertiarily his job is to appropriate thefunds his peers are legislating to spend without his support. Naturally he sends it back to his district. This passes the purity test, IMO. The money is spent no matter what, so what is the harm in trying to keep it within his constituency? If you choose to downgrade Paul because of this, and you are consistent, you must HATE every other politician with every fiber of your being.

Jack Hunter (The Southern Avenger):

Appreciating the Ron Paul tribute last night requires perspective. In 2008, Dr. Paul was not even allowed at the GOP convention. In 2012, our forces have grown so strong that the RNC thought it wise to invite Dr. Paul to speak. He refused. Still, the RNC ended up showing a video tribute to a former candidate - who has not endorsed the nominee - and gave his senator son a prime time speaking role. To my knowledge, this is unprecedented in modern American political history. This is yet another demonstration of our indomitable strength. This is winning.

I wonder if the paper will run these types of headlines after Obama's speech at the DNC?

The editor's note on the Commercial Appeal story is classic - The AP takes an "occasional look" at the facts - hmmm I wonder which occasions they choose...

That day has lasted the last 3 1/2 years.

Humbly - what I think the Libertarian cause is missing is that they've already shaped the agenda. Look at the message tonight - no social agenda; no abortion mention; limited foreign intervention; big focus on individual freedom, on self reliance, on limited government, etc. You may not believe these guys will follow through but at least they are singing your song (if only a verse or two).

If you are waiting for someone to only say exactly what you want you will be waiting a long, long time.

saw this in an interview with GJ today and thought it relevant

Craig Schlesinger: So you don’t take any solace in the fact that the Republicans nominated such a “staunch libertarian” for Vice President?
Gary Johnson: [Laughs] Yeah, right! We seem to be 180 degrees on most of these issues– and I am talking about Paul Ryan– Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, marriage equality, the drug war, PATRIOT Act, NDAA, an actual balanced budget, FairTax. You can go down the list –Paul Ryan supported banning online poker. [Laughs] That’s a big difference!

People still say Reagan shrinked the size of government, when really he increased spending. We've paid for this nonsense with every war and every recession since....?

You are correct. Reagan tripled the debt while he was in office.

So increased spending increased demand and the economy took off. Bush cut taxes on the rich for supply side trickle down and kaput.

Got it.

Reagan had a huge tax cut in 1981. He then increased taxes 11 times in his last 7 years, those increases total was about 1/2 of the amount of the 1981 taxcut.

Reagan was not scared to do tax cuts and he wasn't scared to do tax increases.

Interesting how many of the mainstream media stories about Ryan's speech are framed around supposed "lies" he told instead of looking at the whole speech or at least the speech's theme. Won't hold my breath expecting the same type coverage for Biden's speech.

What's the deal with the plant closing in his hometown situation. The left are trying to kill him for it. Anyone know of good article on the issue?

As far as I know Ryan said Obama visited the plant as a candidate in 2008 (Feb I think) and told them with government support the plant should be around for the next 100 years.

The plant closed in Dec 2008.

Press is claiming Ryan is blaming the closing on Obama eventhough Obama wasn't Pres at the time.

Ryan's claimed point was that Obama told people that government help would save the plant but that didn't turn out to be true - the early bailout from W and later bailout from Obama did not result in the plant coming back on line. Ergo, government support was not the magic bullet to keep the plant alive. It was a point about believing in government as the solution for businesses.

Press is over-reacting. Ryan didn't lie about anything here - he specifically said Obama visited as a candidate and never claimed it was Obama's fault it closed.

Mainly because he was fighting a dhimmicrat house and senate that wanted to carry on as if Carter was still president. Reagan shut the federal government down three times rather than sign bloated budgets.

I'll be the first to post - WTF is the point of this thread?

Just to give you something to hijack.

Worked didn't it?

Why did you post in it?

Doing your Joe Biden impersonation?

I love that dude that is running for Romney's vice president. I prob wont even vote for Obama now. What a great speech he gave. One of the best in convention history. And he looks younger than 42.

One of the most brilliant minds in public service.

Compare that to the dimwiticrat VP nominee.

A washed up old drunk that shouldn't even have a security clearance.

That speech will be a big f*in deal.

Biden is going to speak? That should be worth a laugh.

FWIW, I never listen to the commentary, I don't need some overpaid talking head telling me what was just said.

BTW, Hitlery is avoiding the DNC convention like the plague, she is planning on being in the Cook Islands (about halfway between Peru and New Zealand out in the Pacific Ocean) on 'important' state department business.

I've heard that Obama isn't going to be there either, he is doing 17 fund raisers and golfing five times. Any truth to that?

I think the plant actually closed in '09, but the closing announcement came in '08. Same difference I guess.

I really doubt anyone is voting based on that particular misrepresentation by Ryan. There's a lot of distortion by both sides. I suppose it is a little more lame since he made it sound like it was right around the corner from his house or whatever.

You are aware Carter is the President that lowered capital gains to 28%.

Eh. I like Christie. I don't like you liking Christie because we now agree on something. Go back to Sarah Palin.
