Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

Have you jumped on the Hype Train?
I know some Oregon fans. And when Chip was coaching for them and the first few years when Helfrich was their coach they thought that offense was unstoppable. They usually got a wake up call from teams like Stanford and Arizona. Those offenses Chip and Helfrich had at Oregon from 2010 to 2014 were much better than what Hype has at UT currently.

The FF has gone even crazier than usual...

I think we can beat Bama. But the stars have to align perfectly for us. Plus having to deal with the corrupt SEC officiating that's automatically biased towards Bama so not be easy.

But I do think we can.
I don’t think the officials are biased for Bama.
They are biased towards a team that can make the SEC money
And we are close in that regard this year

That's where I am, too. There's a benefit in a great offense, but you absolutely have to have a real defense.

I read something that "Offense sells tickets. Defense wins games." When it comes to TN football; it's all about winning. Losing while watching a showy offense leaves a bitter flavor. Maybe new generations see it differently; I hope not.
I still think our defense keeps us out of any real championship conversation. But they are absolutely good enough to get us to 10-2, which is a huge step in the right direction. As long as we show improvement year to year, i am not hugely concerned about how they do.

The defense is better than last year. Yeah that's just bottom 100 quality to bottom 80 quality. But that's really all we need. And again, with how many points our offense scores the other teams are going to be far more aggressive than they otherwise would.

And that is backed up by the stats so far. YTD our Defense has given up more yards 1983 in 2022 vs 1696 in 2021, but fewer points 89 in 2022, vs 109 in 2021. Teams are more aggressive but less effective against our D. I will trade yards for points all day long. Yeah good teams will turn those yards into points, but on average we are better off.

And we have played better competition this year. 3 ranked teams this year vs 2 last year, and last year we had played an FCS team in this time as well to shift the stats in their favor.

It's the only part of the song our fans can actually time correctly. They get Rocky Top right maybe 50% of the time, but the rest of the lyrics are a jumbled mess.

The Rocky Top crowd at LSU sounded pretty good on TV. Granted I didn't have my hearing aids in - not much reason to do that and have to listen to the announcers. It's always fun to hear Rocky Top in other stadiums - especially when it's loud and often.

there were times if you closed your eyes you would've thought it was a home game. Say what you want about vol fans but we have all just been waiting to be good again and have an excuse to go nuts.

Yep; pretty much agree across the board with that. 10-2 would be my bet; I was even thinking that after the FL game. It might go either way because of that "on any given ... guess we have to call it gameday now since games aren't just on Saturday". I'm not thinking we'll catch Bama or GA napping; but in almost fifty years of watching UT football, you can never tell when one of the others like even KY or Vandy will for some reason get uppity on game day. Back in the 60s when they were the last games and not going to bowls (because there weren't a couple of hundred of those), Vandy and KY would absolutely pull out all the stops because TN was their bowl game.

In any case except for some key losses like Taylor in the secondary; the defense is improving. We had a preview of how bad it might have been in last year's bowl game. I'm of the opinion especially after the LSU game the way to play the rest of the season is just flat out go after the QB and hope for the best in the secondary.

I was thinking the same thing during the game. The story years ago was that bowls loved to have TN because the fans came.

I agree with this, but I would like to see it combined with bump and run coverage on the outside rather than this 10-yard cushion crap that we're currently doing. That makes it WAY to easy for the QB to see pressure is coming and immediately dump it off to a wide receiver on the outside that is WIDE open.

Regardless of what we do on defense schematically though, our best defense this season is the extreme pressure that we put on opposing teams to feel that they have to score on every possession in order to keep up with our offense. Getting off to a quick start in games is critical for us.
