I just turned 53. Had first one at the age of 50, which used to be the old rule. They changed that recommendation to start them at 45 right around the time I had passed 45. I had so many polyps on the first colonoscopy that my gastroenterologist had to prioritize to remove the largest ones and then come back a year later for the rest. Total polyp count between those 2 procedures was upper 20’s. Some of them were pretty good size, but no cancer. This was my first real follow-up, and I was down to 4 small polyps.
While I waited until 50, I wouldn’t recommend that. I lost a high school friend to colon cancer two years ago. He had some stomach pain, went to see the doctor, and he had stage 4 colon cancer. He passed away about 3 months later.
The colonoscopy itself is nothing. It’s the prep (cleanout) that sucks.
Always go Suprep or generic version. It's much less drinking. Even if insurance doesn't cover, its worth out of pocket.
I would encourage you to not wait until January if that is an option. Try to get in ASAP. It usually takes a little while to schedule a colonoscopy anyway. You may already be looking at January for the procedure even if you did the initial doctor appt with a gastroenterologist now. Thanks to everyone who responded. Really appreciate it. I am 47 so its probably time to do something soon. My bowels Definitely dont work the way they did just a couple years ago either, so I am thinking i have some kind of obstruction. I have a regular appointment in January. Will have to address the issue then i guess. My family medical history on my Dads side is as bad as it gets with cancer. Yall might remember it taking him in 9 weeks a few years ago. All of his siblings also died in their 60s from cancers of 1 type or another. I hate cancer. Passionately. If I get diagnosed, I think I am gonna pass on the chemo. Didnt help my Dad at all...and kept him stuck in the hospital and miserable for the last 9 weeks of his life when all he wanted was to go home. Anyway, sorry for the depressing post. Thanks guys.
Yep, you need to do it Marcus. It's really not that bad overall. The prep sucks, but the procedure is a big nothing burger. I honestly love them for the knock out time. When it's over you feel good and get to go eat a big delicious meal. Thanks to everyone who responded. Really appreciate it. I am 47 so its probably time to do something soon. So they found polyps on my first one and I was on the 5 year plan. Next time they found nothing and put me back on the 10 year plan. They kept you on 5 year after a clean exam?62 here - first colonoscopy at 50ish. had polyps so on the 5 year plan. no cancer.
on the prostate exam all I can say is I had a mildly high PSA test and doc recommended biopsy since my dad had prostate cancer - it was a horrible experience but how I learned I have prostate cancer. fortunately it's low grade so I'm just on active surveillance.
my point? stop worrying about violation and keep an eye on your health. you've been through worse than these procedures. suck it up
