Official Jon Gruden Thread VII

Since I don't have much in terms of direct contribution to this thread other than dumb silliness and moral support, I'd like to open a discussion within the thread about boosters, money and possibilities.

Last year, There were rumors here about CSUAD hiring away Alabama's OC, Jim McElwain. People here, those that care, were saying NO WAY. He'd never come here. We suck too bad. Why would be leave the wing of Saban?

Well, a year later at $1.5M per year...he's here.

As I stated before, he frequents my bar in the off season, and he has opened up to me somewhat, because of my SEC background and the fact that I own the bar. Anyhow, he and I have talked several times about the state of the CSU football program and the direction it's going. He told me directly, that his goal is to get the boosters together to raise money for a new football stadium...on campus. One with a retractable roof, that has a 45k-60k capacity. He believes it will help him recruit. Then he went on to discuss his ambitions of winning his way (with CSU) into the Big 12. We talked about the teams bailing (at that time) and it being a perfect time for him to sneak in there. And we talked about how big that would be for my business when teams like TX, OU, OSU, TT, etc...came to Ft Collins. My eyes and ears were wife open as you can imagine.

I asked him about the money from boosters. He said, "we already have all the private sector money in place. $450M for a new stadium was a piece of cake."

Fast Forward to now: this is happening. Non-football people and "green" cultures in Ft Collins are protesting it because they think it's a waste of tax dollars....and they refuse to believe CSU boosters have that kind of money. LOL

the fact is, a lady named Pat Striker, a lical billionaire has actually tapped into her financial resources and has begun a north Ft. Collins improvement project. They have completed a new highway widening project, they are going to build a whitewater kayak river park in down town, new historical renovations are occurring as we speak. It's happening...and Coach Jim McElwain told me it would. I tried to tell others it was going to happen and no one listened.

I liken my story to the situation in Knoxville...because football drives the bus. As stated before...more for just the University....the whole damn city and state. Jim brought this philosophy here from his experience as Tuscaloosa and he knows what he is doing...it's actually easy to see. I can easily see why it would be a necessity to UTAD to make this hire above and beyond any other prospect.

It's a vision!

Good stuff!

This is incorrect.

There are some schools that sell alcohol at their stadiums and even some that are on-campus facilities (West Virginia is one). The NCAA doesn't like it, but there are no rules prohibiting this (EDIT: NCAA rules, that is).

SIAP, but it's my understanding that NCAA prohibits the selling/advertising of alcohol in stadiums ON university property. The programs that sell alcohol have a stadium off campus. Example: Tennessee State - LP Field. Bad example, but first that comes to mind.

When I went to stay up in j.c everybody raved about how great fat tire beer was. Anyone else ever try it? Thought it tasted like trash personally. Waay overrated.

It's okay. I'm with ya though, I didn't see the hype surrounding it. I've bought tons of good 6 packs for like 10 bucks and there are quite a few that I've bought more than once. Fat Tire is not one of them. Personally, I thought it taste like tootsie rolls.

Thought so lol.

Isn't Busch a poor man's Bud Light though?

Pretty much everyone I know that drinks regularly still drinks Busch. I'm talking about people going on 30. Wedding receptions, bachelor parties... always lots of Busch beer being drank.

Yep

Western Kentucky sells it at all their games. Not sure how but they do at football, basketball, and baseball and they are on campus

I'm not so sure about this. I went to the TCU/WVa game in Morgantown a few weeks ago. WVa sells beer in the stadium and I am almost certain it is on university property.

Check the posts by DTO, Jay, and Lex in the Cliff Notes.

Seems that there was a big step toward finalizing things yesterday. My guy says the same thing.

In a lengthy process, a milestone was reached.

Hate to go back to this but have another question..the milestone.....was this a hang up in the negotiation / contract?

I haven't seen it around here but they also had a beer called purple haze up there too. Was a raspberry wheat beer and it was the bomb. Ever see that one?

May have shared the same keg. You at UT from 94-98? I graduated undergrad in 96 and grad in 98. Was at UT Martin 94-96 then transferred.

Same time frame. 94-99 for me. If you tell me you ever bought coldsberg light for 2.99 a 12pack I am certain we were running buddies.

Yeah, and Ainge is being a prick.

He may have been told to shut up (I think it's for ratings IMO) but they flat out denials instead of just saying "I don't believe it will happen, but it may" is just going to hurt his credibility in the future.

Yeah, Abita. I normally don't like flavored beer, but that one is great.

I've heard people talk about it but I've never actually looked for it. Isn't it around Tennessee? I'm not in Tennessee but I'll look for it. I have had Shocktop though that's raspberry wheat. Didn't taste like beer at all.

If you like beers with fruit flavor, Leinenkugels makes a bunch. I've had Summer Shandy(lemon), Berry Weis, Honey Weis, Sunset Wheat and Octoberfest. Oddly enough, I've never had the original Leinenkugel's which is a heffenweizer I believe.

Sunset Wheat tastes like fruity pebbles.
