Official Jon Gruden Thread VII

Let's remember Gruden has turned this job down twice and both times Hammy was the AD. Wasn't willing to pay the big bucks and the team was in worse shape than it is now. Maybe not W/L wise but the roster is in much better shape. I think Gruden is ready to get outta the booth and coach again and this job is more attractive than it was 3 and 5 years ago. Also the money men have stepped in to make it happen. If the naysayers will just step back and think, everything that is being said about Gruden coming here makes sense. Doesn't mean he is 100% coming but you can't say 100% he isn't.

Well I believe him when it says it's on the tip of everyone's tongue around campus. He says it feels like a balloon that's about to pop.

That's all we can ask for after last week's crickets I suppose.

Are you talking about UT campus or ARK campus?

ESPN radio guys in Fayetteville Arkansas are talking about the opening now. They just said if Jon Gruden goes anywhere in college football, it will be to UT lol. Apparently the radio guys are not as confident as the guys in the forums ha ha.

Not to be a Debbie Downer. . but don't we have the same thing going on here, the radio guys herr are not as confident as our forums

Bet if you get you one of them air dusters and spray that stuff out, you can run a line on the particles as they fly...then theres that propellant stuff...just sayin...

Not a bad idea.....

But I got it squared away. Flipped the keyboard over and banged it on the desk a few times. All sorts of stuff came out of it. Sifted through it a bit and was able to mound up a couple of clean pinches anyway.

Housekeeping is going to leave me another nasty note in my office tonight. :) Those are some big angry ladies.... I bet I won't be getting a fruit-basket from them this Christmas....

Take Care,

Bo has Chris Mortenson on his show now.

Mort: The Arkansas coaching rumors flying around are getting silly. I've been hearing from NFL buddies, 'What's wrong with your people?'

:lolabove:

..and lets say Ainge is right and Gruden is not coming here....and the process is further along than he can talk about...his words.....then WHY has not one other coach gotten any traction? Something would have leaked that we were negotiating with someone else. We always return to Gruden. EVEN the media that says it isn't going to be him only talks about him. I'm having a hard time trying to determine if it is wishful thinking on my part or deductive reasoning that Jon Gruden is the next coach of our Tennessee Volunteers. Probably a little of both!

Not to be a debbie downer, but here are a few reasons and I will just touch on 2 glaringly obvious ones:

1) Because it is much more likely than not that these big money people and people within the AD, who got their money or their position from being good business people, don't typically like to leak a great deal of information about what is going on. In business and in public administration, leaks can be deadly. Most of these guys know when to keep their mouth shut and probably don't go telling a great many people (especially the friend of a friend of a friend) what the real scoop is.
2) because we (the fans) are shooting down any idea but Gruden, even if there was a tiny leak or a whisper, we wouldn't even consider it because our minds are made up. This is the part that scares me the most about all of this. We cannot get good information from both sides of the isle because we tend to run people off who have information we don't like and we also tend to give too much credence to people whom we don't know who give us information that we want to hear.

That is just all hypothetical of course. I want Gruden too, but some of the reasons that we chose to support the idea that Gruden is coming could just as easily be used to surmise that he isn't.

My fingers are crossed, but when I read these boards and see the information that everyone latches on to I get more and more confused as to why people seem so convinced.

Jimmy "I have no sources anymore" Hyams just said that he was told Gruden did discuss the job with UT but he wanted a 10 yr guarantee/$5 million per and $4 million for his assistants. Hyams then said "and Tennessee isn't going to pay that kind of money".

I don't know if he was told that or it's his assumption.

Those numbers aren't crazy. $5 million sounds about right. That would be a few 100K less than Saban, according to what someone on here said about his salary.
I'd like to compare the $4 million to what Kiffin's assistants made here.
A total of $9 million is on the high end, but it's not as crazy as it looks at first. Increase whatever Kiffin was making to $4.5 million and add the total for Kiffin's assistants, and the result will be the absolute least we could possibly be offering.

EDIT: I read the post saying Kiffin made $2 million, and his staff made $3.3 million. Going from $3.3 million for a staff hired by Kiffin to $4 million for a staff hired by Gruden makes sense. The leap is going from Kiffin's salary to Gruden's salary. $5 million for Gruden and $4 million for his staff sounds pretty good to me. I just wonder what the buyouts would be.

Yes but no Tennessee radio guys are saying if he coaches in college it'll be at Arkansas. Funny how they dreamed up Tennessee.

ESPN NFL insider @mortreport is set to join us on the show right now. You can listen in at SportsTalk with Bo Mattingly .

Mort: The Tennessee job would be the only collegiate job that I think could really get Jon Gruden's attention.

Mort is Chris Mortensen.

If Mort says something then you better listen. He is about as solid as it gets in the media. Also he knows Jon Gruden very well! Thanks pattiy, love you even more now!

Gruden is the smokescreen.

I have considered that too but why has not one other coach gained traction then? Something would STILL be leaking unless Hart is the greatest stealth magician EVER. The CIA needs to hire him!

I am simply talking about us and our information.

The information connection seems even more tenuous for a school like Arkansas but their irrationality doesn't concern me.

;)

EDIT: After rereading your post a few times, I think I misunderstood your response initially. I think there has been a great deal of information that says that the Grude would listen to a job offer like UT could create (to be fair, he would probably listen to an offer at Arkansas too if enough $ was involved). I think many, if not all. coaches would listen considering the amount of 0's that the paycheck would offer.

Where the rubber hits the road is how far from that initial statement we have veered. It is no longer that Gruden would consider the job (which I believe is true), it is now that he has taken it and it is a done deal.

Primarily Ut, but I think the NCAA might have a problem with the Corona endorsement, since no alcohol is allowed in any college stadium. As the football coach at UT Dooley has endorsements as well, but this is primarily worked through the AD and not by Dooley himself. Gruden would be allowed to do commercial but the endorsement money most likely would go to the AD...also most of the time commercials are done for big boosters.

SEC Rule not NCAA. Some schools have beer sales. Not many but some do, including West Virginia.
