Initials GP?This is true. I know who baby is (his name, etc.). Played ball on one of Jeff Co's state championship teams back in the 80's and worked in the AD years ago, and still has some connections. He's also pretty conservative (like Larry), and won't say something unless he has solid info. He's also a super nice guy, who unfortunately and tragically lost a young son a couple of years ago, God bless him. Anyway, he's very reliable.
Unless you're trying to argue that deals never fall through after this phase in the process, that anecdote really isn't relevant to what I said.
It could be correct though, sort of.
There's a reason I used the qualifying term "generally." There are always exceptions and a document that is titled "memorandum of understanding" could be treated as a temporary contract.
"Legal effect" would indicate to me that the parties were bound to the agreement and it would be enforceable in court. Like I said, that's possible, but much less certain, especially with a preliminary document like that. Sounds like UT and Cuonzo or Dooley could have been taking a few things on faith.
Hence, why they continued on to draft the final document.
An MOU is a legally binding contract. It just isn't a formal contract. But it states the important terms of the agreement and leaves the rest for a formal contract. Coaches have been known to work a while under an MOU. They get paid just the same. No coach works "on faith."
I am not trying to be the a nega-grud because I am all in on Gruden to UT. However, without giving away my identity, I am very connected to Webb School of Knoxville and I have it on good authority that it was Charlie Strong's kids who visited Webb and not Jon Gruden's. I have no reason to troll as I have been a member of many years and post only when I have something legitimate to say.
Do I believe Charlie Strong will be UT's next coach? Quite simply NO. However this is what I was told.
Now on to Gruden!
