I think they are going to have to give him a deadline and stick to it. I wouldn't go beyond the SECCG if it were me.

Nick Saban at LSU. On paper, he was an average to slightly-above-average coach at Michigan State. In reality, he was fighting an uphill battle at MSU, and made LSU into a national title contender very quickly.

Why do people keep repeating this nonsense? Nick Saban was hugely successful at Michigan State. He took over a program that went 0-11 the year before. He never had a losing season. He was regularly upsetting highly ranked rivals like Michigan, Penn State, and Notre Dame. In 4 years, he had them ranked in the top 10 and stocked with future top draft picks. That's crazy successful at a place like Michigan State. By the time he was hired at LSU, he was considered an excellent hire.

Another good sign is when you see potential candidates reaffirm their commitments to their current jobs. It lets them save face when Gruden is anounced at UT because they can then say that they were not a candidate and did not get turned down.

And I don't think UT has gone a whole season without an SEC win. That might be why Dooley didn't want to coach the last game. He didn't want to break too many records while at UT.
