I haven't posted my opinion too much, because it's not something I feel like spending a ton of time defending, but I've thought one thing for about 10 days to 2 weeks now.

What if both LWS and Boro, for instance, were both correct with the facts as they've been told? It would mean that it is not simply about who the next coach is, it's a big fight between giant egos.

It's a fight about athletics vs. academics.

Over the last two coaching searches every Vol fan has asked themselves this question:Why is that the best we could get at Tennessee? Now we know. Any great hire will want the same opportunity, the same level playing field as Saban, because ultimately, that's who he'll have to beat. On the other hand, an up and comer might take the job because, well it's a huge pay raise and he either thinks he can overcome the obstacles or he's so "green" he doesn't recognize the disadvantage.

I agree with you, if not Gruden, I don't think I'll be a very happy camper with who ends up being here because it will not be Stoops, Patterson, Petersen or the like. Best case, Strong and I doubt he'd take it w/o wanting the same things...so we're way down the list.

Agreed.

He coaches at Mississippi freaking state! U might not understand what that means, because in recent years he has taken them out of the uk/vandy gutter.

He would be a huge upgrade.

Nah. We need a proven coach.

The coach that beat him last night would be better.

The only variable I'd grit my teeth at and merge as one concept is...IMO is it IS about who the next coach will be...blending that with the ego theory.

I thought he just said tht he was committed to leveling the academic playing field.. I'm pretty sure that it was made public that some of our academic restrictions are being dropped.

that is what I thought I heard.

Didn't Hart kinda make us think that your 3rd point was being addressed?
The other two are the "snags" that had crossed my mind as well.

If the academic standards thing is true that needs to change. I'm all for the academic reputation of a university being good, but making yourself unable to compete in football with so much revenue for the university at stake is insane.

Been there and done that myself.
There is nothing like someone who doesn't follow this thread religiously to put things in perspective for you.

I actually follow this thread, almost on an insane level. I just try to be judicious about my posting. I have been reading it since before there was a coaching rumors and speculation thread.

I probably need to stop, it has made me worthless.

In fact, I started blogging (another poor choice) as a way to keep some buddies up to date, who are spread across the US, on my collated thoughts based on radio, social networking, and this.

Shameless(shameful?) plug: If I bleed orange, I am bled out

I don't know Docvol and we have been through this whole discussion before on here. I didn't not retract anything only said the date could possibly be Friday instead of Monday. It could still happen tomorrow. We shall see. Gruden will be our coach GBO

I agree with this but...... with excitement comes expectations.. Just look at the expectations of this team at the beginning of this season...... and that was with Dooley at the helm.. I fell into it myself, I predicted 8-4with things going well and MAYBE an outside shot at 9-3.. Look who ended up 8-4..... Vandy... The team many on here predicted would be lucky to win 4 games...

I think, I hope we will hire Gruden.. I think he is probably the ONE guy that would have the potential to do all the following; unite the fan base, energize and boost recruiting, light a fire under the present rosters butt and move UT towards a National Championship.. That being said, don't expect to win the east or the SEC or the BCS or the Super Bowl.. Expect improvement in all areas and a winning season.. Be realistic on your definition of a winning season..

Also, if the expectations you develop are not met and you're upset about it, go look in the mirror first and ask yourself, "Was I realistic in my expectations? Were they reasonable?"

Try to be honest when you answer...

Solid post. You are right, expectations will be very high as well. I have been involved in coaching for years and no one, I mean no one is a "sure thing". He will have challenges just as anyone would but I was referring to an immediate excitement such as in the Orange and White game, season tix sales, talk shows, and just confidence that we haven't had in a while. We also need to realize as well that even if Grude did come, next year will be a tough year. IMHO.
