Yeah I don't buy "control" being an issue. What control does Gruden want that Hart won't give up? Hiring and firing? I guarantee if Gruden says "I want to fire so-and-so" or "I want to hire so-and-so" then Hart would do it no question! That's silly to think otherwise. The kind of control that NFL Head Coaches often desire (GM control) is not something that a college coach would want.

The hold up is probably about the language of the contract. I'm sure UT wants to protect themselves if Gruden decides he hates college and wants to take an NFL job, probably a big buyout. Gruden obviously will want the freedom to move on if he so chooses without extreme penalty. Here's the thing he doesn't HAVE to take a job, he will make 4.5 million sitting in a booth calling games. UT has very little leverage in these negotiations. I doubt he will lose sleep if he passes on the UT job so if UT truly wants him, they better make it worth his while. They don't have to cave to all his demands, but he has to have some motivation.

If I'm Dave Hart I give Gruden everything he wants in terms of salary, staff, and control (still not sure what that means though). I come up with a reasonable and negotiable buyout if he decides he wants to move on. If Gruden truly wants the job he will accept something like that, but if he's going to be crazy greedy then there's no point pursuing him further.

IMO...a little bit of the difficulty lies in the fact that the NCAA is still examining us with a microscope. Dave Hart was brought into to right a ship that had been hurt primarily by its football and basketball programs, as far as probation goes. And Hart wants to make sure everything done is in his power, not saying this doesn't get done, but that is a sensitive issue for Hart and a very sensitive one at the current state of the program...

I don't think Gruden needs UT to help his NFL negotiations. I don't think he would string Tennessee along like that.[/QUOTE]

Regardless of if you want Gruden or not this is a silly statement. If his goal is to get the NFL gig he wants his AGENT is going to drive this as far as he can take it.

So you're implying that you wouldn't accept Gruden as our next head coach because he doesn't have college coaching experience?

Skeeter said the hang up was on the level of institutional control. I was making the point that there is a distinction between the college level experience Saban brought to the job and what we could reasonably expect Gruden to know and understand. That is if there is really a hang up on the control issue.

All I know is i haven't seen anything different from the OG's so when one of them comes out and officially say this thing has fell through then im 100% Gruden lets get him.

big time coaches don't have buy outs Saban don't have a buyout .its time for Hart to go all in quiet treating this like its Dooley we are signing here

IF that is the issue then the idea of Zook being on board helps in that conversation...

This is what I've been told by a man who patrols the sidelines home & away. Won't say who, out of respect to him. Cindy Gruden has been in Knoxville with in the past 2 weeks, she wants to be in a house by the end of Christmas Break, to have the boys ready for school. Announcment to come by next week. Even after yesterdays events, he just smiled, knowing happier days are ahead of us. Until he says otherwise, I would bet on Gruden. :salute:

Tennessee is the one place that I think Gruden wouldn't allow his agent to string along.

I don't get the whole premise that is coming from the AD people about Gruden not wanting to have to answer to anybody.
It's contrary to everything that has been said and done previously. Hart has said he doesn't want to be in on the day-to-day but will hold a coach accountable if something goes wrong. Hart let Dooley do what he wanted (including firing 3/4 of his staff) but ultimately held him accountable.

Gruden would have such a favorable contract that if he came and hart was being an a$$, either he would walk away, or (more likely) Hart would be fired.

No other conclusion than this is a 'convenient' excuse to delay the announcement or throw people off the trail.

I am not saying there isn't a solution. But I could see negotiations becomming more involved to get a structure for managing these issues when Gruden is unfamiliar with them. That is if it isn't a done deal and all this talk is .... well you know.

Just talked to a client who is on the Board of Trustees and asked him if we had a coach yet... he said that the Board knows nothing.... they will likely find out 30 minutes before it is announced

If she wanted to live in Knoxville, why didn't she move here anytime in the last 4 years? She has no reason to stay in Tampa if Knoxville where she really wants to be.
