Official Jon Gruden Thread XIII

Folks, let's be patient, it took Bama from the last week of November until the first week in January to land Saban. You won't a big time "winner", we are going to have to fight it out. The longer this goes (without Gruden becoming either an NFL Head Coach or getting an extension from ESPN), the better we are. Still 100% Gruden

Follow Saban's lineage of denial right up to becoming coach of the Tide.
A chronology of comments about Nick Saban taking the head coaching job at Alabama:

Nov. 27:
Saban: "When I was in college it was always about coming to the pros. This is the challenge I wanted. I had a good college job. Why would I have left that if I was going to be interested in other college jobs?

"I took this as a challenge. We certainly haven't seen this through and gotten where we want to go and finished the job here, so why would I be interested in something else?"

Dec. 5:
Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga (after giving Saban a vote of confidence): "I am completely sold on Nick Saban. I would admit we made a mistake if we did make a mistake, but I firmly believe in Nick Saban."

Dec. 7:
Saban: "I'm flattered that they may have been interested in me, but it never really progressed, because we just never let it progress."

Dec. 21:
Saban: "I guess I have to say it. I'm not going to be the Alabama coach. ... I don't control what people say. I don't control what people put on dot-com or anything else. So I'm just telling you there's no significance, in my opinion, about this, about me, about any interest that I have in anything other than being the coach here."

Dec. 27:
Saban: "I'm just making a rule to never comment on something like that again because every time you comment on it, it just makes for another story. So I'm not going to comment on it five years from now, and I'm not going to comment on it next week."

Jan. 4:
Saban: "What I realized in the last two years is that we love college coaching because of the ability that it gives you to affect people, young people. ... If I knew that my heart was someplace else in what I wanted to do, I don't think it would be fair to the [Dolphins] organization if I stayed."

That sounds good.
I'm just thinking of how easy it would be to set up a tripod and take a pic.

Quite the roller coaster.

It's been discusse in here already but to summarize, the doors are covered by the UT banner, there is sound equipment being installed, the tripod is a very expensive piece of equipment, so on...

How much time passed from the day Saban made his famous denial to the day try hired him??y Bama friend said about a month...I don't recall exactly.

Didn't Saban get hired 3-4 day after his last game at Miami was complete?

thats about right. its quoted earlier in this thread

Heck...if Gruden is ready to go...But Espn is the issue...announce it...make Jay Graham interim coach while he finished out MNF or at least gets throught the next game! They gotta do something....this fan base cant take this much longer...or things are gonna get out of control....

I haven't really weighed in much on this topic. I would love to get Gruden..think he would be a great coach here, and we would be back to competing for titles. I have no clue what Hart or the powers that be are thinking. But, if Gruden is the guy they think can get it done, and they hire someone else because they didn't want to pay the money to Gruden, I think that's a little foolish on their part.

It's one thing if you simply don't have the money. But with the money coming back into the AD and if the boosters are really wanting him, pay the man. Nobody thought Saban was going to Bama when he did either. What did they do? They paid the man. It seemed like outrageous money at the time. Does it now?

"According to a source who spoke to someone with knowledge of the situation, Gruden's salary figure was higher than Alabama coach Nick Saban – who is the highest paid college football coach in today's market." - Kevin Ryan

A "source who spoke to someone..."? Sounds like, "My brothers, friends, cousin..."

Pay. Him.

Hired Jan. 5th I believe

Is it any shock that Gruden - a Super Bowl winning coach - wants a salary higher than Sabans? UT is competing against NFL teams for his services - and that means shelling out NFL kind of money.

The most reliable thing I have heard during all of this is Tom Mattingly today. That guy had been with the university for 50 years.

I'm beginning to think that Gruden is getting cold feet and will keep asking for more and more until we say enough. That way he can tell Cindy that he tried but we wouldn't give him what he needed.

So Ryan got the info from a source who got it from a source.

A source is a source, of course, of course,
And no one can talk to a source of course
That is, of course, unless the source is the famous Mister Ed.

Go right to the horse and ask the source
He'll give you the answer that you'll endorse.
He's always on a steady course.
Talk to Mister Ed.

People yakkity-yak the street and waste your time of day
But Mr. Ed will never speak unless he has something to say

A source is a source, of course, of course,
And this one'll talk 'til his voice is hoarse.
You never heard of a talking horse?

Well listen to this: "I'm Mister Ed."
